Do you garden? More and more people are growing their own food and managing their own landscape by gardening.  Some are doing it for the exercise, some for the freshness factor, some to save money, some for the knowledge of what chemicals they can avoid, some to reduce their carbon footprint and others are doing it just because it is fun!  Calvert Library and the Master Gardeners of Calvert County want to help whatever your reason to garden is, so be part of the buy local, eat local movement and grow your own!  The Garden Smarter Series presented in partnership with Calvert Library won first place in the Workshop and Presentation category for the 2011 International Master Gardener Search for Excellence.

Workshops hosted earlier in the year covered topics such as ‘Propagation’, a discussion about starting plants from seeds, by dividing plants, and plant cuttings, and ‘Companion and Succession Planting’, beneficial crop relationships that affect insects, plant and soil health, and even the taste of your veggies.

Though they are halfway through the series, there are still plenty of great free workshops to attend.  The remaining workshops are at 10am on Saturdays at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  June 8 is Shade Gardening, August 10 is Create a Habitat with Native Plants, August 17 is Ponds and Water Features, August 24 is Preservation.  Other workshops include Fall Vegetable Gardening, Invasive Plant Identification, Putting Your Garden to Bed and more.  This award-winning series has been offered for over six years with new and refreshed information each year along with a repeat of favorites.

“What a terrific series!  I have learned something new at each meeting I’ve attended and am looking forward to learning about shade gardening with native Maryland plants,” one attendee commented.

The Garden Smarter Series is one of several educational activities conducted by the Calvert County Master Gardeners for our county.  They also sponsor the Bay Wise Yard Certification Program, information booths at Children's Day at J. Patterson Park, Patuxent River Appreciation Days (PRAD), Green Expo, Youth Day at the County Fair, developing community gardens, and much more.  CCMGs are residents trained and certified by the University of Maryland Extension to provide public education activities in our county.  Their local website is http://extension.umd.edu/gardening/mastergardeners/local/calvert.

In addition to the Garden Smarter Series, Calvert Library also hosts Calvert Eats Local each month.  This group invites you to join them at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on the third Monday of most months.  Check the library calendar because sometimes the group is dining out, sometimes they are having a potluck and sometimes a book discussion, film or lecture.
