MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND MARYLAND LIBRARIES LAUNCH ONLINE FINANCIAL LITERACY CLEARINGHOUSE

BALTIMORE, Md. (January 31, 2012) – Maryland Association of Public Library Administrators (MAPLA) and the Maryland Department of Labor’s (DLLR) Office of the Commissioner of Financial Regulation today announced the launch of an online Financial Literacy Clearinghouse. The clearinghouse provides Marylanders with access to information on personal finance topics ranging from budgeting and saving to foreclosure prevention. Hosted by Enoch Pratt Free Library, the clearinghouse is located at www.MyMoneyMatters-md.org

“Promoting strong financial literacy is critical to our state’s economy and to all Marylanders,” said Secretary of Labor Alex Sanchez. “We are pleased to partner with the Maryland library communities with this initiative as we continue to move Maryland forward both locally and competitively in a global economy.”

MAPLA and DLLR announced a partnership in October of 2011 in an effort to provide all Maryland residents with resources to empower and assist in making smart financial decisions, and to improve workforce development and adult education. Visitors to the library seeking job training and advancement assistance have increased during this period of economic downturn. MyMoneyMatters provides another resource for Maryland residents.

“The financial and career information provided by librarians are invaluable to our patrons," said Carla D. Hayden, Chief Executive Officer of the Enoch Pratt Free Library. "Every day library staff across the state are on the front lines as they talk to Marylanders in need of help. The resources they provide and the free programming offered by libraries can hopefully help patrons find jobs and pave the way to personal financial recovery.”  Calvert Library Director Patricia Hofmann, a member and former President of MAPLA, said, “We have seen the impact of a difficult economy on our community and are pleased to have easy access through the State Library to even more resources for our customers.”

In response to the financial crisis, the General Assembly created the Task Force to Study How to Improve Financial Literacy. Co-chaired by Senator Anthony Muse and Delegate Dana Stein, the Task Force developed a list of recommendations which proposed, among other things, that the Commissioner of Financial Regulation create and maintain a website to provide financial education resources, services and programs for Maryland consumers.

“The current downturn has highlighted the importance of assisting our citizens with understanding financial products and making sound financial decisions,” said Commissioner of Financial Regulation Mark Kaufman. “We are excited to be able to deliver this assistance online, and I can think of no better partner in connecting consumers with helpful information than the Enoch Pratt Free Library.”

MyMoneyMatters contains content which pertains to all ages, at all stages of life and will be updated regularly to include new consumer alerts and materials related to financial literacy.

The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation protects and empowers Marylanders by safeguarding workers, protecting consumers, providing a safety net and cultivating a thriving workforce that can meet the demands of Maryland’s dynamic economy. For updates and information, follow DLLR on Twitter (@MD_DLLR) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/DLLR.Maryland).

RED-HOT MUSICIANS CHASE THE WINTER BLUES AWAY AT CALVERT LIBRARY

Winter Interludes keeps the music coming at Calvert Library!  Nashville performer and song-writer Courtlyn Carr kicked off the library’s new music series to a big audience with her versatile voice and crowd-pleasing tunes.  Music lover Jerry McGaughran said, “It was cool to see someone who started her musical career as a Calvert County Public School student emerge as national talent!” To continue the great tunes throughout the winter doldrums, your local library has lined up a host of other great musicians to round out the new Winter Interludes series.  All events are free to the public and begin at 7 pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick and the dates are as follows:

February 16: United States Naval Academy Electric Brigade

February 29: ellen cherry

March 15: Kevin Sullivan

March 29: 2-4-U Band

The Electric Brigade is the Navy’s premier popular music ensemble and the U.S. Naval Academy’s musical ambassadors to the nation. Made of up enlisted sailors, the band provides entertainment for formal occasions, pep rallies and everything in between. Since forming in 1979, Electric Brigade has performed all over the world.  Expect all ages to be tapping their feet while the group shows off their repertoire of modern pop, classic rock, country, disco, swing, hip-hop, soul and more.  Librarian Robyn Truslow points out that “Electric Brigade has been known to draw a large audience. We may have to run a video feed to our lobby like we do for Calvert’s Next Idol so people can sit out there to enjoy the show!”  Make sure you get a seat to see Electric Brigade at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Thursday, February 16, 2012.

Soulful singer/songwriter ellen cherry classifies her music as, “spunky downer pop…for smartypants.” The Baltimore artist is a hard working full-timer who has licensed her music to the Oxygen Network, MTV and Soap.net. In 2009 she wrote, recorded and performed a TV campaign for the FOX Networks and even composed the score for a shadow puppet piece entitled “Alonzo’s Lullaby” that won the prestigious UNIMA Citation of Excellence. She was awarded Maryland State Arts Council’s Individual Artist Award for Vocal Performance (2007) and Music Composition (2009). See ellen at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on February 29, 2012.

Kevin Sullivan is a singer/songwriter/guitarist hailing from the tobacco fields of Southern Maryland. With simple, melodic guitar parts he uses his alluring voice to tell you stories of life, love and the world around us.  Kevin couldn’t play a lick when he first began attending Saint Nicholas Lutheran Church in 2000, but he could sing. By 2002 he was a fixture with the church’s sing and rejoice choir, becoming a staple singer and guitarist for their contemporary service. His new album, “Propeller EP,” just debuted a few weeks ago.  See Kevin Sullivan at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on March 15, 2012.

The 2-4-U Band is an energetic husband and wife team performing oldies, rock-n-roll, swing, and classic country hits. The 2-4-U Band hails from Calvert County and has been performing for the past 20 years.  Bring your dancing shoes because we are clearing space and expecting a Macarena and more!  See the 2-4-U Band at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Thursday, March 29, 2012.

press release for Wii Tournaments at Calvert Library

February 21, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Get ready to race and rumble with Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. at your library!  On Saturday, March 24, 2012, Calvert Library in Prince Frederick will partner with Lusby Play ‘n Trade to offer two Wii gaming tournaments.  The first tournament will take place from 10am to 12 noon and will feature Mario Kart for drivers between the ages of 6-12.  From 1:30pm to 3:30pm we will hold a tournament for older kids and adults (ages 13 and up) featuring Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

First prize in each tournament is a $50 store credit to Play ‘n Trade in Lusby.  The Mario Kart tournament will be single elimination; Super Smash Brothers Brawl will be double elimination.  This game is rated for teen audiences because of cartoon violence and crude humor.  Details and rules can be found on the Calvert Library website.  Bring your own controller if you like!

Why are we gaming at the library?  Well, not only is it fun, but gaming is a form of informational literacy.  According to ilovelibraries.org, gaming is an opportunity for kids to manage several resources at once, develop strategies, predict outcomes, adapt to changes, track statistics and more!   Gaming in the library also provides an opportunity for kids to interact with other kids from the community and for families to play together.

Go to the Calvert Library website (calvert.lib.md.us) for details about rules and format.  Registration required.  For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.
