Author August Imholtz to Speak at Calvert Library about Alice in Wonderland's Pervasiveness (press release)

March 18, 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Calvert Library is deep into a celebration of Alice in Wonderland at 150 years old. Some of us adore Alice in Wonderland; some of us don’t understand the attraction, but everyone is familiar with the story and has probably alluded to the story in general conversation (e.g., “I didn’t mean to go down that rabbit hole”). If you visit the Prince Frederick location you will see display cases full of some extraordinary Alice paraphernalia.  There is also Alice related art throughout the building which showcases how fully Lewis Carroll’s book has permeated our world. The exhibition is just a portion of the Alice in Wonderland collection of Amy Plummer who has served on the Board of Library Trustees and is also one of the past presidents of the Calvert Library Foundation.  Plummer also happens to be a member of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America.  Thanks to Plummer’s connections and generosity, Calvert Library Prince Frederick will be hosting author and Lewis Carroll scholar August Imholtz on Monday, April 13, at 7pm for a presentation entitled, “Alice in Wonderland at 150: How She Came To Be and Live So Long.”

Whether you are a fan of Alice or have not figured out why she’s so pervasive, you will find this presentation illuminating. Mr. Imholtz will cover the origin of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its almost equally famous sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There; explain some of the aspects of Alice which makes her perennially popular with children and adults; and survey the worldwide range of translations, illustrations of Alice after the 1907 expiration of the copyright, and the parodies and uses of Alice in popular culture around the world.

August A. Imholtz, Jr., is a former president of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America; a former president of the Baltimore Bibliophiles; a current member of the board of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America, as well as a member of the Lewis Carroll Societies of North America, Great Britain, Canada, and Japan; and was a member of American Library Association’s Rare and Endangered Government Documents for a dozen years.

He has written and edited several books and published more than 100 articles in academic journals on Greek and Latin philology, Lewis Carroll, and other subjects. He has lectured at Cambridge University, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., Princeton University, Duke University, the Foreign Language Library in Moscow, and many other institutions.

Do not miss this opportunity to solve the Alice mystery with this esteemed speaker.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Women's History, Black History event....Carol Booker to talk about book Alone Atop the Hill (press release)

March 16, 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

We know that the past informs the future so it is always wise to learn more about our history.  Calvert Library, Calvert County Commission for Women and Concerned Black Women are hosting Carol McCabe Booker to present Alice Dunnigan’s autobiography Alone Atop the Hill: Pioneer of the National Black Press on Monday, March 30, at 7pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick. Alice Dunnigan began life in rural poverty and eventually became the first African American woman to serve as a White House and congressional news correspondent.  The book has been described as an unflinching look at how Dunnigan endured the rough-and-tumble political terrain of the 1940s and 1950s and how she persevered to keep civil rights in the public eye before the civil rights movement was recognized by white America.

We have Carol McCabe Booker to thank for bringing this story back into the light.  Booker condensed Dunnigan’s 1974 self-published book editing it to add scholarly annotations and historic context resulting in a book with wide appeal.  Booker is a former journalist and DC attorney.  She and her husband, Simeon Booker, wrote Shocking the Conscience: A Reporter’s Account of the Civil Rights Movement.  Booker is an engaging writer and a captivating presenter.  Come to be enlightened, entertained and inspired.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

FW: FYA press release for Friends New Website

March 16, 2015
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Robyn Truslow
410-535-0291

The Friends of Calvert Library (FOCL) is pleased to announce the launch of a new website, folcalvert.org. The new website has been in development for the past three months, said FOCL Board Vice President and web designer Laura Allison. She noted that the old website was out of date and didn't provide the functionality needed by the organization. The new website allows individuals to join FOCL and get information on upcoming FOCL events, in addition to previewing items for sale in the FOCL gift shop at Calvert Library, Prince Frederick.

FOCL Board President Martha Grahame is excited about the new website. Grahame said, "It will help the FOCL keep up with the library system it supports and the needs of the public."

FOCL is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that advocates for and supports Calvert Library. The group contributes to the library by offering financial support for equipment and programs not normally paid for by public funding. Funds are raised through membership fees, donations, book sales and special events. Friends also support the library in other ways such as by volunteering their time.

Shown in the photo, left to right, are Carrie Plymire, Director of Calvert Library, Laura Allison, Web Designer, and Martha Grahame, President of Friends of Calvert Library.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Saturday, March 14 marks the Pi Day of the Century (3/14/15 = 3.1415)!  Only once every 100 years does the date reflect 5 digits of that mathematical superstar pi.  Pi is ancient, irrational, non-normal and transcendental...has that ever been said about you?!  Calvert Library Prince Frederick is celebrating the day in grand style with pi-related activities all day long beginning at 9:26am (plus 53 seconds...just to get a few more digits of 3.141592653).  There will be fun for all ages beginning with a proclamation and the unveiling of a giant pi scroll.  Saturday Storytime at 10:00am will have a fun math theme and will be followed by a pi parade.  Pay close attention to those numbers marching through the library because later you will have a chance to show off your memory…  But first, get your Einstein costume ready because at 11am, there will be an Einstein look-alike contest.  Did you know that Einstein was born on March 14?  Engineers and scientists will judge all entrants in three age categories…Little Ones (0-5), Kids (6-17) and Adults (17+).  Each winner will receive a pie and a very special memento!

Throughout the day, there will be a wide variety of pi fun like pi bracelet making, Pi Minecraft, Pi in Wonderland and more.  Then for the Grand Finale…the person who can write the most digits of pi from memory will wow the crowd and win a prize!  Go head-to-head with other pi-experts beginning at 1:59pm.  The Guinness world record was set in 2005.  Do you know what the record is?  Come and find out!

You do not want to miss celebrating the Pi Day of the Century with Calvert Library! For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.
