Bullying is more and more frequently in the news and on our minds, especially if we have children.  There are young people active in our community doing something about this painful problem and Calvert Library Prince Frederick invites you to support them on Thursday, May 23 at 7pm.  There will be two plays, music and information.  The school system will provide an overview on anti-bullying initiates currently in the schools and reporting processes.  The event will include the Change Club performing their play, Twin Beach Players’ Youth Troupe performing Mickey Cashman’s play, and Unique Divine Keemer performing her song “Don’t Be a Bully.”  Bring the family to learn what you can do to prevent bullying and to celebrate these young people making a difference.  For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 or check the website at calvert.lib.md.us

Calvert Library and Commission for women host Dr. Bernice Sandler, Godmother of Title IX (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Special Presentation from Title IX Pioneer, Dr. Bernice Sandler

Forty-one years ago, a law was passed that forever changed education for women and girls.  This law was Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.  Today most of us take for granted that admission to law schools and medical schools is based on merit, not gender.  But, before Title IX, almost no women, no matter how highly qualified, were admitted.  Today, most of us assume that is natural to have girls as well as boys interscholastic and intercollegiate athletic teams.  But, before Title IX, that was not the norm at all.

Calvert Library and Calvert County Commission for Women are hosting a special presentation by Dr. Bernice Sandler, who has been called "The Godmother of Title IX" by the New York Times.  Attendees will have the opportunity to network at a reception beginning at 6 p.m. and the presentation will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2013, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Calvert Library Prince Frederick, 850 Costley Way.

Margaret Dunkle, Chair of the Calvert County Commission for Women, will introduce Bernice (“Bunny”) Sandler, who is her good friend and mentor, as well as Title IX pioneer who will be inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame next fall.

This inspiring expert will talk about how things used to be – before Title IX – as well as challenges today and what the future holds for equal educational opportunities for women and girls.  You will hear the real story of why Title IX was needed when it became law 41 years ago, and why it is still needed today.  There will also be an opportunity for questions and sharing.

Dr. Sandler is a Senior Scholar at the Women’s Research and Education Institute in Washington, DC and is well-known for her expertise in women’s educational equity as well as in sexual harassment.  She played a major role in the development and passage of Title IX in addition to other laws prohibiting sex discrimination in education.  For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 or check the website at calvert.lib.md.us

Dan Brown, author of the controversial and immensely popular novel, The DaVinci Code, will be making only one public appearance for his upcoming novel, Inferno, due to be released on May 14.  You can watch this appearance via live stream at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Wednesday, May 15 at 7:30pm.  He will be at the Lincoln Center in New York City and Doubleday is making the video stream available to libraries across the country.

Dan Brown as named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by TIME Magazine in 2005.  Editors have credited his book with, among other things, “keeping the publishing industry afloat…and spiking tourism to Paris and Rome.”  His book also created quite a hubbub among the Cardinals in Rome and triggered a number of books repudiating the assertions made by Brown in the novel.

Will there be copies of his new novel for sale at the event?  That remains to be determined. Calvert Library Public Relations Coordinator said, “I hope to obtain a couple signed copies to use as a fundraiser so let’s keep our fingers crossed and bring your checkbook just in case!”

For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 or check the website at calvert.lib.md.us
