Downton Abbey on the Big Screen at Calvert Library

Calvert Library Prince Frederick is hosting popular PBS series Downton Abbey on their big screen and inviting anyone interested to come start with Season One.  They are also encouraging you to bring your knitting with you.  The series begins on Tuesday, September 18, at 5:00pm and will continue the third Tuesday of each month until there is no longer a solid audience for it.

The newish building for Calvert Library Prince Frederick has always been a gathering place and many of the events hosted there aim to provide opportunities for those with similar interests a chance to meet like-minded people.  Many crafting groups have found the library welcoming to their hobby.  Perhaps that’s because library director Patricia Hofmann happens to be a knitter.  This diversion has prompted her to offer to hostess a series where knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, needlepoint or whatever your chosen busy-work is welcomed.  “Gardening season is almost over so now I can start to work on my knitting projects.  I love to get more than one thing accomplished at a time and I’ve heard that I MUST watch Downton Abbey… so this series was born.  We start at 5pm so we can eat dinner while knitting, enjoying nice company, watching a great show and still be able to get to any evening meeting or events that start at 7pm.” Hofmann has sometimes been described as a multi-tasker.  Robyn Truslow, Public Relations Coordinator says that the “other” reason the library chose a 5pm start was that the library likes “to have a variety of events that are accessible to various people and a number of folks have told us that they don’t like to drive at night.  This series is for them!”

Retire Gracefully series at Calvert Library (press release)

August 15, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Many people look forward to retirement and the idea of not having to get up and go to work each morning.   Unfortunately, some people neglect to truly “plan” for retirement.  If you are serious about wanting to have a fulfilling and problem-free retirement, participate in Calvert Library’s “Retire Gracefully” series.  The series is offered the first Thursday of September through December at 7pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.

Thursday, September 6, features estate planning attorney and "Your Money Matters" columnist Lyn Striegel who will share her tips on the basics of estate planning.  She has over thirty years of legal experience related to finance and estates.  Among other things, she will talk about wills, living trusts, power-of-attorney, and living wills.  On Thursday, October 4, Julie Schejbal will help take the fear out of managing issues with dementia, Alzheimer’s and nursing homes.   Prior to entering private practice where she concentrates on estate planning, retirement planning, estate administration, business planning and taxation, she worked as an attorney for the Internal Revenue Service in the estate and gift tax division.  She will teach you what you need to know about elder care—spend downs for Medicare purposes, asset preservation, guardianship, conservatorship and long-term care issues.   Lyn Striegel will be back on November 1 to talk about what kind of investments you need and what you should avoid, as well as help you figure out just how prepared for retirement you are.  The final workshop on Thursday, December 6 will cover choosing a healthy retirement lifestyle, with ideas for a socially, emotionally, and physically healthy retirement.

These workshops are free and open to the public.  Registration is requested but not required.  For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 or check the website at calvert.lib.md.us

Lifelong Learning Ereader Workshop (press release)

 August 14, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Do you want to save money on ebooks?  Or are you looking for a way to pass time on your commute?  The many advantages of ebooks include the ability to change the print size, the flexibility of downloading from home, and that they are automatically returned – which means there are never any overdue charges!  If you are interested in downloading electronic audio books or electronic print books then our Life Long Learning class, Downloading Books using Overdrive is for you!

Calvert Library is part of a statewide consortium that buys ebooks for Maryland library customers to check out on the ereading device of your preference.    As of today, there are thousands of titles available with multiple copies of each.  If you wonder why there needs to be multiple copies of a digital book, maybe you would be interested in attending the ebook workshop.

The ereader event, Downloading Books using Overdrive, is at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Monday, September 24 at 7pm.  Your friendly librarians will explain how digital rights management works for library ebooks and also tell you how to download those books to your device.  If you would like to attend, please register through the website or by calling 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Getting set up to take advantage of library ebooks does take a little patience the first time but after the initial software is downloaded and your account created, it is even easier than a trip to the library to “pick up” a few books.  Attendees will be walked through the entire process of downloading the software, creating an Adobe Digital Editions account and then checking out an ebook and loading it on an ereader or smartphone.  If you have one, feel free to bring your e-reader, laptop, tablet or smartphone and your library card for hands-on practice.

(press release) Calvert Eats Local

August 13, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Looking for a way to break into the mysterious yet healthy world of purchasing and cooking local foods?  Look no further!  Calvert Eats Local is a citizen organization dedicated to the support of sustainable agriculture and community in Southern Maryland, and they meet the third Monday of the month at 7 pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  The group started from a book discussion at the library of Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle when the attendees asked the library to continue the conversation with this grass-roots group.

The food found in supermarkets, including much of the organic stuff, travels an average of 1500 miles, and is therefore heavily dependent on our petroleum-based transportation system. Buying locally grown food removes the transportation step, reducing the amount of fuel, pollution, and time it takes to get that food from the producer to you. Calvert Eats Local looks to find ways to find, grow, prepare, and serve food and drink that is truly local and truly sustainable. Every quarter they have a potluck where members bring amazing food made with local ingredients, and their monthly meetings feature book discussions, promotion of Buy Local Challenge week, talking about how to supporting local farmers through CSA participation and farmers markets, food-related documentary screenings, and more.  Just as important, this group provides a network for people to find out not only where and when they can buy local food, but also how and why, and you can participate in the discussions both on and offline. So whether you are looking for a deer processor, as one member was, or simply looking for a source of grass-fed beef in southern Maryland, both questions asked on the Calvert Eats Local Facebook site, come join Calvert Eats Local.

Art Displays at Calvert Library press release

August 10, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Calvert Library continues to support the edification of the community in a myriad of ways.  Performances, workshops, exhibits, classes, Storytimes, and of course, books in every format are the expected ways we expect to see the library make offerings for our enlightenment.  In addition to the traditional, Calvert Library is proffering art for our consumption.  No we are not talking about cupcake wars, though the library has been known to host these.  We are talking about local artists’ works on display in both Calvert Library Prince Frederick and Twin Beaches Branch.  Though the display space is small at Twin Beaches, they currently have nearly a dozen works by photographer John Young livening up their computer center.

Young is relatively new to the field of photography, only taking it up in earnest in 2006.  He claims the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay is his inspiration and certainly his photography is inspired.  When describing his process, he makes it sound like quite a science, “take multiple shots, multiple changes to ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc…review, edit, enhance, highlight, obscure.”  But clearly, he has an artist’s eye for choosing the scene to begin with.

At Calvert Library Prince Frederick, Gary Jameson’s work is sprinkled throughout and provides a thought-provoking view of Southern Maryland scenes in minimalist acrylic.  Jameson’s art has been influenced and inspired by America’s industrial past and environmental present.  Jameson has a BFA degree from the University of Illinios, a MFA from Northern Illinois University and is an alumnus of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine.   In addition to practicing his art, he also teaches at the College of Southern Maryland and is an Artist-in-Residence at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.

Calvert Library welcomes artists to show for two months at a time in their Prince Frederick location and one month at Twin Beaches Branch.  For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 or check the website at calvert.lib.md.us
