Two Girl Scout Badge Workshops at Calvert Library

Both Brownie and Cadette Girl Scouts will have the opportunity to earn a badge at Calvert Library in January.

The Brownie Reading Rocks Try-It Workshop will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014, 7:00 – 8:30 pm, at Calvert Library Prince Frederick. Brownies will learn about different types of books, make a book-related craft, and do several other book and reading activities to complete the Try-It requirements. Participants are asked to bring a copy (or the title) of their favorite book for one of the activities. Girl Scouts can attend individually or as a troop, but each girl participating must register separately and should be between the ages of 7 and 9.

Because the Reading Rocks Try-It was developed by the Girl Scouts of Connecticut council, it is not available at local council shops. But the Try-Its will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the workshop thanks to Ambassador Girl Scout Troop 4342, whose members are assisting with the program and selling the Try-Its as part of a service project.

The Cadette Book Artist Badge Workshop will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Calvert Library Prince Frederick. Participants will explore the art of bookbinding, learn several book artist techniques, and create two books, which will complete the badge requirements. Girl Scouts can attend individually or as a troop, but each girl participating must register separately and should be between the ages of 11 and 14.

Actual Book Artist badges will not be available at the workshop, but each participant will receive a signed form confirming her completion of the requirements which she can give to her troop leader.

To register, go to calvert.lib.md.us or call Calvert Library at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862. For more information about the workshops, contact Linda Buckley at the library.

Tweens Write Letters to Troops at Calvert Library

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Beverly Izzi

410-535-0291

Calvert Library recently hosted an event for Tweens to honor veterans called Letters to Troops. The evening focused on the importance of writing to men and women actively serving in the military.  Veteran Louie Cano shared his experiences with the students, particularly how as a 17 year old, receiving communication from home kept him going.  Community volunteer and military mom, Gail Black, shared her experiences in writing to her son and her role in supporting others who are far away from their families.  The fifteen tweens then had time to write their own letters to troops and draw pictures to be sent.    The following is a beautiful example written by a local tween.

Dear Hero,

First, I want to say thank you for serving.  I know I don’t know who you are but I know you are an amazing and wonderful person. I know you probably miss your family very much.  I live in Maryland. It is very cold here.  I’m 12 years old and I have one sister and she’s 6 and very crazy.  Some of my family members have served in the Navy.  And my mom’s friend had to serve overseas and we kept her kids for a year. I hope you get a lot more letters from other kids and when you get back home, I know your family will be very happy to see you.  Thank you for serving our country!

From Veteran’s Day 2013 to January 10, 2014, each branch of the Calvert Library will be accepting donations for our troops. We would greatly appreciate donations of the following travel size items:

shampoo

conditioner

liquid body soap- no scents

liquid face wash

deodorant

lip balm

toothbrushes

toothpaste

dental floss

baby powder/Golds Bond powder

hand cream

Q-tips

nail clippers

fingernail files

small, thin packs of baby wipes

small packs of tissues

black, brown or blonde hair ties

On January 14, 2014, tweens (students in grades 5, 6, and 7) will come together again in Prince Frederick at 6:30pm for our “Packages & Pizza” event to pack the items collected and decorate boxes to be shipped overseas.  The January event is open to all Tweens.  If you weren't able to join us for the letter writing campaign, it's not too late to thank our military men and women.  Join us as we pack our donations for our troops and enjoy pizza with friends.

Family Astronomy Night at Calvert Library Fairview Branch (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 3, 2013

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Have an interest in the night sky?  Hoping to try out a high-tech telescope?  Drop by the field behind Calvert Library Fairview Branch from 7pm to 8:30pm on November 7th and join the Astronomy Club of Southern Maryland’s search of the skies.  With cooperative weather, stargazers should see Venus, Uranus and Neptune as well as our moon and a variety of objects in the Milky Way galaxy like double stars, planetary nebulae, globular star clusters and open star clusters.  According to club member and NASA Solar System Ambassador Chad Ellington, “You may even be able to catch sight of the Adromeda galaxy…over 2 million light years away.”

Tom Dugan and Chad Ellington recently helped create a display at the Calvert Library Prince Frederick to celebrate National Astronomy Day (October 13, 2013).  The display includes an opportunity to see a prism dividing up white light into the colors of the rainbow; a “to scale” representation of Earth and our moon; replicas of the spacecrafts Integral and New Horizons (now on its way to Pluto) and the Hubble telescope; planispheres; a sky globe; meteorites and other space rocks.

If the exhibit and starwatching spark your interest, you might want to follow up with the Astronomy Club of Southern Maryland which meets once a month (based on the phase of the moon), usually at Jefferson Patterson Park.  There are no dues and there are plenty of telescopes for viewing.  For more information about the club, check out their website http://somd-astro.s5.com/.  For more information about the event at the library, call Robyn Truslow at Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Book Art Auction at Calvert Library Prince Frederick (press release)

Pictures here:  http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=calvert%20library%20mchugh

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 25, 2013

Every year Americans fill enough garbage trucks to form a line that would stretch from the earth halfway to the moon, and each year tons of unwanted books find their way into landfills. Happily, not all books have to meet that fate. With a little creativity, a little energy, and a little time, many formerly-loved books can be repurposed.

In the “Repurposed-Books-As-Art Display” at Calvert Library Prince Frederick, Carolyn McHugh, artist and member of the Friends of the Library Executive Board, demonstrates how used books from thrift shops, books sales, and garage sales found a new purpose in life--not only as art but as a fundraiser for Friends of Calvert Library!  Visit the library from October 2 through October 17 to bid on your favorite repurposed books.

McHugh assures all bidders that “repurposing” is easy and painless.  No sacred writings, first-editions, Pulitzer Prize novels, or tomes of any historical or social value need be used in the process, and every part of the book--the cover, the spine, the pages--can be utilized to create a functional, artistic, or whimsical item.  McHugh challenges all book lovers to pause before relegating a book to a landfill-fate and think of a creative way to give it a new lease on life.  Or better yet, bid on one her creations to benefit Calvert Library.  Friends of Calvert Library provide extras for the library such as digital cameras to record library events, DVD cleaners, supplies for workshops, snacks for library events, and much more.

For more information, call Robyn Truslow at Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Calvert Library to host Civil Rights Icon Simeon Booker on Oct. 7 (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 17, 2013

Contact: Robyn Truslow 410-535-0291

Calvert Library Prince Frederick will be hosting Simeon Booker, 94-year old acclaimed journalist who covered the U.S. civil rights movement from its earliest days. He was a correspondent for Jet and Ebony and the first black staff reporter on the Washington Post.  He will be at the library on Monday, October 7, at 6:30pm.  This event is the fourth event in the Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle series sponsored by Gilder Lehrman Institute and the National Endowment for the Humanities.  The series is designed to encourage public conversations about the meanings of freedom and equality in America and started with a screening and discussion of The Loving Story, a documentary about the couple whose 1967 landmark case overthrew laws that disallowed people from marrying someone of another race. Booker covered this case.  The next film in the series will be Freedom Riders to be shown on September 30 at 6pm…Booker was a Freedom Rider.  Clearly, he has a story to tell that no history buff should miss.

Booker and his wife Carol McCabe Booker wrote Shocking the Conscience: A Reporter’s Account of the Civil Rights Movement which has been described as “a searing and eye-opening memoir.”   According to Donald Graham, chairman of the Washington Post, “Simeon Booker was there when Emmett Till’s mother first opened his casket and saw his disfigured face.  He was on the bus when the first Freedom Riders rode into Alabama…his book is outstanding—sharp writing to equal his brave reporting.”  This book will be available for sale and signing.  Share this appointment with history with your friends, family, neighbors and congregation.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Tween Mask Making Workshop at Calvert Library Southern Branch

Local artist, Denise Weller, will present a Mask Making Workshop Thursday, October 24, 2013 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in partnership with Calvert Library. Ms. Weller has a BA in Psychology and Art and an MA in Art Therapy and is a Montessori trained teacher.  She currently teaches at Tidewater School, infusing art and science into student learning.

Learn about the use of masks in different cultures and how to choose your personalized mask theme. Then design and create a mask that expresses you, using paints, fabric, buttons, beads, keys, feathers, hardware, watch parts, and other intriguing mixed media supplies. Mask themes explored could range from heroes to predators, from royalty to vampires, and from creatures to historical figures. Here's your chance to improve your design skills to make a stunning mask you can wear or use to decorate your room.

Kids in Grades 5, 6, and 7 are invited to participate. Event takes place at Calvert Library Southern Branch at Solomons, Maryland. Registration required. To register call Calvert Library at 410-326-5289 or go online to http://calvert.lib.md.us/.

Calvert Conversations at Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Joan Kilmon

410-257-2411

If you are interested in local history or just talking with interesting people, Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch has an event for you the second Thursday of each month at 10am.  Calvert Conversations is an informal “coffee and tea” gathering of people who share an interest in local history.  The first one of the season will be held on September 12.

Topics spring from the group.  Whatever the majority are interested in, the conversation follows.  Last year, old photographs were popular, so on September 12 participants are encouraged to bring local pictures to discuss.  What do photographs tell us?  What don’t they tell us?

On October 10, the group will learn more about Fishing Creek’s treasures and history.  Every month promises to be interesting and fun.  You help decide what the group learns about.  No registration necessary.  For more information, call Joan Kilmon at 410-257-2411.

We are fortunate in Calvert County to have access to some amazing online resources as a part of the Southern Maryland Regional Library Association and SAILOR.   What is even more incredible is that all it takes to access these resources is a Calvert Library card!  While we do have print resources that you can access in-person at our four Calvert Library locations, we provide our customers with quality online information resources that can be accessed 24/7 on our website.

The Southern Maryland Regional Library Association system contracts with a variety of vendors that include:

·         EBSCO MasterFile Premier

·         Gale Virtual Reference Library

·         World Book Online

·         Biography Reference Bank

·         Science Reference Center

·         History Reference Center

·         LearningExpress Library

·         Brainfuse Help Now (Calvert Library’s online live tutoring help)

·         Mango Languages

·         just to name a few.

These databases provide access to about 20,000 full-text magazines, journals, newspapers, reference materials, and other specialized information sources.

As area students return to school, many students are thinking about test preparation materials to get an edge on the SAT, ACT, and AP exams.  Instead of pricy private tutors or paying for a prep course, Calvert Library customers have access to a free online database called the LearningExpress Library where their library card connects them to practice exams for the SAT and ACT as well as AP practice guides in various subjects.

LearningExpress Library is an incredible tool for users of all ages. From fourth grade elementary level math and reading skill improvement to higher level math such as Calculus to career specific practice tests, the site has a plethora of practical educational resources.

GED students will find the full range of subject-based practice exams, and the list of medical field licensing practice exams is incredible. Civil service applicants will find a great way to prep for any upcoming application eligibility exam, and those heading to the military will find ASVAB preparation materials right at their fingertips.  And it’s all free to Calvert Library card holders.

Before you spend money on preparation materials, be sure to check out what your library card can do for you.  For more information about Calvert Library online resources or to utilize the LearningExpress Library, visit us online at http://calvert.lib.md.us
