It is that time of year again!  The Annual Giant Gently Used Book Sale hosted by Friends of Calvert Library will begin with a members-only preview night on Thursday, January 8 from 5-7pm.  You can join at the door with $10 for an individual and $15 for a family membership.

The sale opens to the public on Friday, January 9 from noon to 3pm and will also be held on Saturday, January 10 from 9am-1pm.  The event is in the meeting rooms at the Calvert Library Prince Frederick and there will be thousands of books in good to excellent condition.

Calvert Library Prince Frederick is hosting Twin Beach Players Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra USO Show: Vietnam on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at 7pm.  This show will be a tribute to veterans of all wars and showcase the music of Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope humor.  The performers are Sid Curl as Bob Hope, Jamie Zemarel as Frank Sinatra, Jeanne Larrison as Gina Louise. Robert Snider will perform on drums and Bill Resnick on keyboard.  The musicians and actors all have long and colorful resumes.  Thanks to sponsorship from the Calvert Arts Council, Calvert Library is able to offer this show free so don’t miss the opportunity to laugh, learn and honor our veterans.  Twin Beach Players is a non-profit community theater based out of Chesapeake Beach and North Beach.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

###

Details about the performers:

ROBERT C. SNIDER (Percussion) A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, Bob has lived in Calvert County for over last 30 years. He recently retired from the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C., after 30 years of service. While there, he served as National Tour Director, Support Staff Chief in Charge, percussionist and later timpanist with the Concert Band and drummer for the Country Current, country/bluegrass band. He has also performed numerous times as a percussion soloist/clinician for major music conventions around the country. Snider is a busy freelance percussionist in the Washington, D.C. area, a first call substitute music teacher for the Calvert County school system, Artist-in-Residence: music, for the Twin Beach Players local theater group and maintains a home percussion/piano studio in Owings, Maryland.

Bill Resnick (Keyboards) hails from Miami Florida. He studied at Miami Dade junior college and at the university of Miami. His teachers were: Bernie J Harding, Lucas Drew, Mike Trenni and in Maryland, Albert Daily. He has been playing jazz and modern American music since the age of 14. He has toured with a number of famous groups through America and the Orient. He currently is an instructor of piano and upright bass at the Garrett music Academy in Owings.

Jeanne Larrison (Gina Louise) was born a Jersey girl, who majored in Theatre Arts at an Iowa college, attended the professional actor's training at Circle-in-the Square Theatre on Broadway, then maintained an existence for 20 years in New York City as the proverbial Struggling Actor. She performed in at least 40 of the 50 United States, on tour and in stock and dinner theatres until the fateful production of MY FAIR LADY where this "Eliza Doolittle" met the "Henry Higgins" who would later become her husband. Some favorite roles include being "Alice in Wonderland" for 10 months in Paris, France, and "Charlotte" of CHARLOTTE'S WEB from coast-to-coast in the USA. A recreational runner, Jeanne has been singing the "Star-Spangled Banner" at marathons and other race start lines for the Annapolis Striders, Montgomery County Road Runners, and Baltimore Road Runners since 2007.

JAMES ZEMAREL(Frank Sinatra) may be familiar to local audiences from the Twin Beach's Memorial Day Celebrations of 2014 and 2013, when he performed in past re-creations of USO shows. At Everyman Theatre in Baltimore, he has performed in musical tributes to Johnny Mercer and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Jamie’s theatrical career has included roles ranging from the Prince of Peace, in “Jesus Christ Superstar”, to the Prince of Darkness in“Dracula”, from the accident prone Pirate King in “The Pirates of Penzance”, to the suave Frenchman Emile in “South Pacific”. He’s been the crazed Dentist in“Little Shop of Horrors” and the perfectionist linguist, Henry Higgins, in “My Fair Lady”, where he first met his lovely wife, Jeanne, playing his Eliza. Jamie appeared in the National Tour of “Gigi” as Gaston, opposite Louis Jourdan, and with the New York City Rockettes at Harrahs, Atlantic City, as Aristede in “Can Can”. His vocal resume spans genres from Rock and Roll to Big Band to musical theatre. At various Maryland venues, he has channeled Bing Crosby in a one-man show entitled “Remembering Bing”. At Toby’s in Columbia, he performed in “My Way, The Music of Frank Sinatra”, which came quite naturally to him having performed for many years as a vocalist in his father’s Big Band, The Zim Zemarel Orchestra. For the past 20 years, apolitical Jamie has appeared in the DC area, Off-Broadway and across the USA as a member of the political satire musical comedy troupe “The Capitol Steps”, in roles varying from Presidents Clinton and Bush, to rockers Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson (the white years). Jamie dedicates tonight’s performance to all who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States.

Sid Curl (Bob Hope) returns as one of his favorite characters. Sid is a veteran of the Viet Nam war era and cherishes the chance to play Mr. Hope again as he heard him in Frankfurt, Germany. Sid is the Board President of Twin Beach Players and has been an actor and director for them since 2000. Mr. Curl has designed or lighting designed over 500 shows in the MD area. Sid has traveled the East Coast from Massachusetts to North Carolina designing lighting shows for many national tours of various musicians along with several Grammy winners and one Academy Award winner, Dr. Ralph Stanley. Lately Sid directed The Legend of Sleepy Hollow for the Players and will be the lighting designer for the next children's production of Babes in Toyland opening day after Thanksgiving.

Celebrate & Decorate SWAP Event

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Robyn Truslow
410-535-0291

Calvert Library hosted its first swap meet a couple weeks ago and it was a grand success!  Over 80 people benefited from the event…some cleared out their closets and some took home cool baby items like a wooden rocking horse, adorable baby clothing (some with the tags still on them!) and great board books.

The next event is perfectly timed to save you from having to put away your Halloween decorations!  On Monday, November 3, from 7-8:30pm bring them along with your other seasonal décor, costumes and special occasion “stuff” to Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  Maybe you have an extra pack of napkins left over from a baby shower or extra Batman plates from a birthday party…maybe you even have some holiday recipes you would like to share and trade.  Perhaps you are looking for a new theme for your Christmas tree.  This will be a great opportunity to refresh your decoration stash and pick out costumes for next year!

To supplement the swap with great fun and education there will also be holiday bow-making demonstrations, refreshments and even music! Join us for this environmentally-friendly, community-building event that will refresh your holiday décor!  Bring your own bags/boxes in which to carry your swap home!  Leftover items will be donated to a thrift store.  More details on this and other swap events can be found at calvert.lib.md.us/swap.html or by calling Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Calvert Library, Commissioner for Women and Calvert County Public Schools Host Title IX Event (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 30, 2014

Title IX & Calvert County Public Schools – Progress, Challenges, & Plans

The Calvert County Commission for Women, in partnership with Calvert Library and Calvert County Public Schools, are offering a special event for the community – Title IX and Calvert County Public Schools: Progress, Challenges, and Plans.  The event will be held Wednesday, October 15, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Calvert Library Prince Frederick, 850 Costley Way, Prince Frederick, MD 20678.

Many people think of Title IX as “that sports law,” since it propelled school and colleges to provide equal athletic opportunities for girls and boys.  However, as the federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in educational institutions, Title IX covers much more than athletics. Title IX is as important today as it was when it became the law of the land more than forty years ago.

This forum will begin at 6:30 p.m., with a half-hour for informal conversation and networking.  At 7:00 p.m., Margaret Dunkle, Chair of Calvert County Commission for Women and Title IX guru will kick off the discussion by setting the stage, providing background about how far we have come and introducing emerging Title IX issues.  Then, experts from the Calvert County school system will outline progress made, current challenges, and plans for the future in related areas such as sports and athletic opportunities/treatment, bullying and sexual harassment, teen pregnancy and parenting, STEM opportunities and more.

Next, special guest Renee Yarbough-Williams – State Title IX Coordinator with the Maryland State Department of Education – will offer Reflections on Title IX Progress, Challenges, and Plans.

The event will close with questions, concerns, and suggestions for next steps from audience members.  The Commission for Women will be holding a similar forum addressing Title IX and higher education issues next April, in partnership with the College of Southern Maryland.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Concussion Documentary and Panel Discussion at Calvert Library (press release)

Head Games: The Global Concussion Crisis
Film & Panel Discussion

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Robyn Truslow
410-535-0291

Calvert Library and Calvert Soccer Association (CSA) are encouraging all athletes, parents of athletes and coaches to attend a conversation on concussions on Monday, September 29, at 6:30pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  The group will first view the 75-minute documentary, Head Games: The Global Concussion Crisis. The film will be followed by a panel discussion led by Neurologist, Dr. Harry Kerasidis, Calvert Soccer Association President Mark McCormick, Football Coach Rick Sneade, and Prince Frederick Eagle President Billy Saunders.

Head Games: The Global Concussion Crisis is a documentary presenting the neurological findings about the chronic effects of head trauma and was directed by Steve James (Academy Award-nominated Hoop Dreams, Emmy Award winning The Interrupters).

Inspired by events from the book Head Games, written by former Ivy League Football Player and WWE Wrestler Christopher Nowinski, Head Games: The Global Concussion Crisis exposes a problem that has been described as a “silent epidemic on a global scale.”  Internationally respected medical experts, professional and amateur athletes and their families will offer eye-opening insights and cutting edge science on head trauma.  The film is rated PG-13.

When asked why CSA chose to fund this film showing and participate on the panel, Mark McCormick, President of CSA said, “CSA is looking forward to the opportunity to discuss this very important topic with the community and appreciates the staff of Calvert Library for organizing this event. Education is a key element to a program’s success in helping to prevent, and identify those that may require treatment for, any injury, especially concussions. Parents and coaches are the first line in observing the symptoms of these very serious injuries and how they react can sometimes mean the difference between whether someone recovers fully or not. We encourage anyone that participates or has family members that participate in any sport to attend this very timely event.”

As for why Calvert Library has chosen this topic, according to Robyn Truslow who coordinates adult events for Calvert Library, “A major component of Calvert Library’s mission is lifelong learning. This workshop can help keep our many Calvert athletes safe and performing at their best and we are thrilled that CSA has made this event possible for the community. This is one topic among many that our customers are interested in learning about.  Join us for workshops on Elder Care, parenting, writing, genealogy and sports photography, just to name a few of our upcoming events.” For more information, contact Robyn Truslow at Calvert Library, 410-535-0291.

Calvert Library OMOB events (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

On Wednesday, September 3, at 6:00pm, Calvert Library kicks off a series of events and workshops related to the One Maryland One Book title, The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande.   The first event will be a Cinema Café showing of an Academy Award-nominated documentary about unaccompanied child migrants as they try to make their way, through Mexico, to the United States. We will follow this documentary with a discussion of the immigration question as it relates to children.  Lights go down at 6:00pm. Popcorn and coffee will be served.

The Distance Between Us is the author's compelling story of her childhood before and after entering the U.S. as an undocumented immigrant. At age nine the author left Mexico and the overburdened household of her stern grandmother and entered the U.S. to live with her father.  She quickly realized that life in America and with her father was far from perfect.  Her story opens up many avenues of conversation on dozens of themes such as the American Dream, family history, abuse, abandonment, immigration, poverty, ideals, freedom, opportunity, acceptance, diversity, education, home, pursuit of happiness and achievement.

Copies of the book are available at all Calvert Library locations and also can be downloaded as an audio or eBook from the library's website.  A few copies have been left in public places around the tri-county to be picked up, read, and passed on. Each library location will be hosting discussions of the book.  Calvert Library Prince Frederick hosts one on Tuesday, September 16 at 7pm; Southern Branch on Wednesday, September 17 at 7pm; Fairview Branch on Wednesday, October 15 at 2pm; and Twin Beaches Branch on Monday, October 20 at 7pm.

For those creative members of our community, the College of Southern Maryland Diversity Institute and the public library systems of Southern Maryland have partnered to put together a story writing contest on the themes found in the book.  The team expects to publish a book containing all acceptable entries and donate a copy of the book to each public library branch and each middle and high school media center in Southern Maryland.  In addition to the pleasure of seeing one’s words published, there will be a $100 prize for the winning entry in both the adult and youth categories.   Calvert Library will be hosting writing workshops for adults (Memoir & Creative Writing Workshops on September 10 and October 8) and teens (What’s Your Story? on September 25 and October 8) to provide editing support and writing inspiration.

For those who want to base their story on their family history, there will be a genealogy workshop on Monday, October 6 at 7pm focusing on immigration records, specifically Maryland records taught by National Archives Specialist, John Deeben.  This will include hands-on practice with the library’s subscription to Ancestry.com.

Further discussions will center on author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s work around the theme, The Danger of a Single Story.  Her book Americanah and her TEDTalk will be discussed on separate dates in October.   These conversations will be facilitated by the Community Mediation Center of Calvert County as part of the Civil Discourse series.   Additional partners for Calvert Library’s One Maryland One Book activities include Calvert County Public Schools, College of Southern Maryland Diversity Institute, Friends of Calvert Library, Charles County Library, Maryland Humanities Council , Southern Maryland Regional Library Association and St. Mary’s County Library.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.
