Cinema Cafe at Calvert Library features Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility

February 13, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

On Wednesday, March 6, 2013, join Calvert Library Prince Frederick as we celebrate Women’s History Month with an award-winning film based on Jane Austen’s first published novel Sense and Sensibility, a satire of 18th-century dating games. After wealthy Mr. Dashwood dies, his second wife and her daughters are left poor by the rules of inheritance. Although the women are taken in by a kindly cousin, their lack of fortune affects the marriageability of both Dashwood sisters, practical Elinor and romantic Marianne. This movie is not only a delicious romance but laugh-out-loud funny.  Lights go down at 6:00 pm and the film will be followed by a short discussion ending by 8:30pm.  Light refreshments and coffee will be served.  For more information call Robyn Truslow at (410) 535-0291 or (301) 855-1862.

Celebrate Black History Month with Calvert Library (press release)

January 28, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Celebrate Black History Month with Calvert Library!  Whether you are a history-maker or a youngun’, Calvert Library is offering you multiple ways to celebrate and to learn something new.  For the small ones, there will be a make-and-take craft offered at each library location the entire month of February.  For children in kindergarten through third grade, Kids Just Want to Have Fun themes for February will include Matthew Henson, African-American co-discoverer of the North Pole.  Families should plan to attend the living history presentation about Charles Ball on Saturday, February 23 at 2:30pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  This event is sponsored by Maryland Humanities Council and features Vincent Leggett as a third-generation slave from Calvert County who was sold to a trader in the deep south and escaped back to Maryland where he acted as a free man and fought in the War of 1812 on behalf of Commodore Barney’s Chesapeake Flotilla.  Ball was discharged in 1814 and published an autobiography, The Life and Adventures of Charles Ball, in 1837. Ball’s story provides a lens through which we can examine the legacy of blacks in the Chesapeake, including their role in the War of 1812.

Leggett, who portrays Charles Ball, is founder of the Blacks of the Chesapeake Foundation (1984) and the Chesapeake Ecology Center (2002). He has held positions at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Anne Arundel Community College, Anne Arundel County and Baltimore City Public Schools, and he currently serves as Executive Director of the Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis. Mr. Leggett is the author of The Chesapeake Bay Through Ebony Eyes (1999) and Blacks of the Chesapeake: An Integral Part of Maritime History (1997). He has also developed a curriculum on the Blacks of the Chesapeake, which is used by school systems in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.

For those looking for more personal engagement, the civil discourse planning team is hosting a showing of the film Ethnic Notions followed by a discussion.  Ethnic Notions is an award-winning documentary about negative racial stereotypes and the impact they have continued to have on Black America.  The 57-minute film will begin at 6:30pm on Thursday, February 28 at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.

All month, Calvert Library Prince Frederick will be hosting an exhibit celebrating local African-American history.  Billy Poe is an author, poet, contractor, photographer and television host.  He has developed an exhibit documenting Calvert County’s African-American community through photos, video and oral histories.  The photos will be on exhibit through the middle of March and Mr. Poe will be available on Saturday, March 9 at 2:30pm to talk about his work and to answer questions.  The exhibit, called My African-American Community: A Collection of Photographs and Stories, 2000-2010 is on loan from Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center, Solomons, Maryland.

Calvert Library Offers Meetings Rooms (press release)

January 28, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Most everyone knows that Calvert Library Prince Frederick and Fairview Branch have meeting rooms where library events, workshops and classes take place.  Not everyone knows that those rooms are available for community groups and nonprofits to reserve for free when the library is not using them.  When the new location for Southern Branch opens, they too will have a meeting room available to the public.

Calvert Library Board of Trustees also recently made a change to the meeting room use policy that expanded the use to include business meetings, trainings, informational sessions and client meetings.  Businesses do need to pay for their use of the rooms and will find that the fees are very reasonable.  The charges vary by location and can be found on the library website at calvert.lib.md.us/meetingrooms.html.  While the rooms are very popular on weekday evenings, they are frequently available during the work day.  According to Patricia Hofmann, Library Director, “The library’s busy-ness on weekday evenings may frustrate some community groups but overall, it is an indicator of the health of our community.  The fact that we have many active community groups and a lot of demand for library programming shows how involved the citizens of Calvert are.  We are delighted to be the center of so much community activity and engagement.”

Each library location has free wifi and Prince Frederick has mounted LCD projectors and screens in two of their meeting rooms.  There are tables and chairs that groups can arrange for their use.  Reservations can be made online from the comfort of your home or office and you will receive confirmations via email.  For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 or check the website at calvert.lib.md.us

Art at Calvert Library (press release)

January 25, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Calvert Library has been featuring local artists at the main location in Prince Frederick as well as at Twin Beaches branch.  Prince Frederick hosts artists for two months at a time and will be hosting The Winsor Salon for February and March.  The salon is a group of eight artists that have been painting together for about three years.  They found that painting together was more fun and more motivating than working in solitude.  While they work, they talk, listen and encourage each other.

According the Rene Cunningham, art coordinator for the Prince Frederick location, the name of this group was selected to “recall 18th century gatherings of those interested in the arts, as well as reflect the group’s love of the beauty, translucence and opacity of watercolors.”  It happens that Winsor & Newton is the watercolor brand of choice for most members of the group.  The group members are Barbara Bennett, Peggy Hovermale, Barbara Mason, Carole Purcell, Nancy Schnell, Nancy Ellen Thompson and Karen Zuza.

Calvert Library Twin Beaches is featuring photographer Judith Upton’s work for the month of February.  The tiny branch only has space for a few photos but the pieces they are showcasing are beautifully illustrative of Ms. Upton’s connection to her subject.  According to Judy, her mother built a darkroom in their basement when she was young and Judy became hooked as she followed her mother around.  She started with what she describes as a little Kodiak camera and now uses a Nikon D-300.

For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 or check the website at calvert.lib.md.us

Free Concerts at Calvert Library start Wednesday-Winter Interludes (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

It is going to be very cold this week, but Calvert Library Prince Frederick is promising to warm things up for you.  Last year, because there were so many other spring and summer concert opportunities, they converted their May Tuesday Tunes to Wednesday Winter Interludes.  It was a great success so they are doing it again starting Wednesday, January 23, at 7:00 pm.  Kappa Danielson, Paul Larson and Kappa’s two daughters will be performing as the Kappa Paul Band with Halie & Emma.  On the mandolin and fiddle respectively, Halie and Emma add so much to the beautiful vocals, guitar and songwriting that Paul and Kappa bring to the show.  The sound has been described as anything from emotional country to Folk-Americana.  However it is described, no one can deny that it is beautiful and moving music.  And seen live?… Simply spellbinding.

The Kappa Paul Band is the kickoff of a six-part series.  The second show will be Wednesday, January 30, and features Andrew McKnight, a nationally-acclaimed singer/songwriter and guitarist.  Celebrating rural America and weaving his masterfully crafted songs and humorous stories with a bit of poetic drama, McKnight sketches a musical soundscape with shades of Appalachia and tasteful slide and jazzy blues, along with feisty anthems and rustic folk.

The first two shows -- plus the Wednesday, March 13 show featuring Zoe Mulford -- will be particularly good for families with young children.  The concerts are free and casual, so it’s a perfect opportunity to expose the little ones to live music.  They can enjoy a dance or two with Mom or Dad at the back of the room while the show goes on and take a break out in the library lobby if they need a change of scenery.

Zoe Mulford’s show is another folk-inspired performance with superb lyrics and vocals.  She brings talented claw-hammer banjo playing, as well as a great personality that creates a magical bond between her audience and her music.  Originally from America, Zoe has settled in England, but the library has caught her during a visit home.  Her live shows have resulted in descriptions ranging from “whimsical” to “powerful” to “funny,” but the gist is that she brings superb music and delivery with a delightful “twinkle.”

For the alternative music-appreciation crowd, Calvert Library is hosting Yellow Tie Guy on Wednesday, February 13; Jackson of The WeatherVanes on Wednesday, February 27; and MHB on Wednesday, March 27.  All concerts are at 7:00 pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.

Yellow Tie Guy is an up-and-coming alternative rock band from the metro area with R.E.M., Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, and 3 Doors Down influences.  They have been touring the U.S. while building an international fan base in expectation of a wider tour.   Truly committed to music and inspiring other musicians, lead vocalist Danny Hill is helping to coordinate a music industry day at the library during the summer.  If you know any musicians, be sure to tell them to keep an eye out for details and to reserve Saturday, July 27, for a day filled with networking and learning opportunities.

Speaking of learning opportunities, do not miss the February 27 show where Jackson of The WeatherVanes will put on a one-man show with guitar, harmonica, stomp box, and vocals.  While The WeatherVanes is a full-fledged band, Jackson likes to stretch his musical wings by doing it all when asked to perform solo.  Using a stomp-box, Jackson maintains an excellent “rhythm section” and combines it with a nice acoustic and harmonica sound to produce a blues- and rock-influenced folk sound.  Come be inspired!

The series wraps up on March 27 when singer/songwriter Matthew Baron (MHB) brings his talent to the Calvert Library stage.  MHB blends healthy doses of blues, reggae, hip-hop, funk, and rock to create a feel-good toasty fire to warm your winter night.

All of these performers have samples of their music on the internet.  Visit calvert.lib.md.us/winterinterludes.html for links and get these shows on your calendar. See you at the library!  For more information, call Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Calvert Library offers Improved eBook Service (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calvert Library Offers Improved eBook Service

Did you get a new tablet for Christmas or perhaps an ereader?  Perhaps you already know that Calvert Library has ebooks you can check out to your device but have you tried it recently?  OverDrive, the online digital elibrary, has a great new look and functionality! A recent upgrade to OverDrive has made the site more user-friendly, simplifying the whole process of downloading free audio and ebooks.

The site offers users more search options and better integration with various ereading devices, including optimization for any screen size. The new ebook platform also offers a new service called “OverDrive Reads,” which is a browser-based ebook reading option; allowing users see the book and read the book in any modern web browser (no ereading device is necessary).

Though OverDrive serves libraries throughout the United States, Maryland’s Digital eLibrary Consortium (the state-wide group that provides OverDrive to participating Maryland libraries) is one of the first in the nation to upgrade the service. As an early adopter of OverDrive’s next generation, our libraries are providing valuable feedback in the development of this new ebook platform. As with any new software, quirks are expected, and OverDrive’s upgrade has a few issues that are being addressed now.

The library has heard feedback that availability of popular books on Overdrive is limited.  While it is true that this is a very popular service, the supply of titles and number of copies of popular titles are ever-growing.  Customers can now place up to six items on hold so with a little planning, you can in fact almost always have something good to eread from the library.  There are still some big publishers that refuse to sell to libraries such as Simon & Schuster, Hachette Book Group and Penguin.  Others charge such exorbitant prices as to be prohibitive…for example, the very popular digital book Fifty Shades of Grey sells to an individual for $9.99 but libraries are charged $47.85 to stock one digital copy of it.  Even so, according to Robyn Truslow, Public Relations Coordinator, the selection has improved, “I was showing my brother how to download an audiobook from Overdrive for his Christmas ride home and was pleasantly surprised to find most of the Harry Potter books available to check out immediately.”

If you need a little help getting started with downloading library ebooks, call your library to schedule a one-on-one help session.  Group classes are available periodically as well.  These classes introduce searching on Overdrive, explain Digital Rights Management (how publishers protect copyright), teach you how to strategically place holds and generally get you comfortable with the site and software. The next class is scheduled at Calvert Library Southern Branch on Wednesday, January 23 at 7pm.  For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 or check the website at calvert.lib.md.us

Ethnic Notions Film and Discussion at Calvert Library (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 23, 2013

Contact: Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORICAL NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES OF BLACK AMERICANS THROUGH A VIEWING OF ETHNIC NOTIONS,

AN AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY

If you are interested in learning about the history of persistent negative racial stereotypes used to marginalize Black Americans in the United States, you will want to attend a viewing of Ethnic Notions

In 1987, Marlon Riggs wrote and directed this award-winning documentary on the subject and received an Emmy Award for the body of work.  In the film, Riggs discusses the subject and traces the origins of black “cultural” characters and icons, products of a racist society that the marketing industry incorporated into common household goods and curios.  Riggs’ historical research is impressive, and the issues raised in this thoughtful, provocative film continue to hold relevance in the 21st century.

The viewing of Ethnic Notions will be held 6:30 p.m., Thursday, February 28, 2013, at Calvert Library Prince Frederick and will be followed by a discussion.

A member of the library’s Civil Discourse group, formed to have conversations with varied members of the community on current, relevant and diverse issues, recommended the documentary as a possible topic for discussion.  She was introduced to the film in an online African American studies class at the University of Maryland University College.  The Civil Discourse team was quick to embrace the topic for conversation. The format will be a listening circle where participants are encouraged to speak from their personal experiences and listen with respect to others who share their experiences. The object of the library’s Civil Discourse conversations is that the participants learn from one another, better understand others’ perspectives and thereby build stronger community.  In addition to the Civil Discourse planning committee that includes representatives from the Community Mediation Center, All Saints Episcopal Church, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Southern Maryland and others; Concerned Black Women of Calvert County is partnering with Calvert Library to get the word out about this important film and discussion.

For more information on the viewing, call Robyn Truslow, the Public Relations Coordinator, at Calvert Library Prince Frederick; 410-535-0291.

Books & Bubbly at Calvert Library January 18 (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Are you looking for a low-key but special night out?  Do you love your library?  Friends of Calvert Library is hosting the annual Books & Bubbly party on Friday, January 18, 7-9pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  There will be live entertainment in the form of author Christine Trent and music by the All Saints House Band.

Ms. Trent will be giving participants a sneak peak of her book that will be coming out February 26, Lady of Ashes, about a female Victorian undertaker being pursued by a crazed killer.  Christine Trent has a series of books published by Kensington Books all based on strong female characters in unusual professions.  Her previous three books have been set in the Regency period so her new book is a departure from the time period but not from the excellent readability.

All Saints House Band will provide music to dance to and there will be plenty of opportunity to mingle with other library supporters.  Tickets are only $35 (this is a friend-raiser rather than a fund-raiser) and can be purchased at any Calvert Library location.

Friends of Calvert Library provide financial support to many of the programs the library offers and to enable the library to offer services and products beyond the reach of tax dollars.  Recently, they have made generous donations to support the renovation of the building which is to be the interim Southern Branch.  President Martha Grahame likes to say that Friends “provide the cream for the coffee that is the library.”  For more information call 410- 535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Tween Movie Night at Calvert Library

"You won't believe your eye!" Tweens!  Join us at Calvert Library Prince Frederick to watch the Tween's pick of Pixar productions on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, 6:30-8:00pm.  Did your favorite pix win?!?  If you voted for the movie starring monsters James P. Sullivan (aka Sulley) and his one-eyed assistant, Mike Wazowski, it did! "We scare because we care." These top scarers of children work for the electric company Monsters, Inc. in the town of Monstroplis and they are the monsters in your closet.  Everything is working smoothly at Monsters, Inc. until a freak accident allows a human to enter their monster world.  Come watch the battles and chases as Sulley and Mike try to return 'Boo' to her room.   Movie popcorn will be served! Registration requested.

For more information call Beverly Izzi at (410) 535-0291 or (301) 855-1862.
