Calvert Library’s Art in the Stacks program is pleased to feature local photographer Ray K. Saunders for the months of November and December at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.

For Ray K. Saunders it’s all about the images, the moments and the light.

He’s been in love with photography since he was a young boy. From the Kodak Instamatic he used in grade school to his first 35mm camera. From his first photograph published in a local newspaper when he was in high school, to his front-page photos in The Washington Post. His father, a photographer, encouraged and critiqued him along the way, providing him with cameras as his talent emerged.

Ray spent his professional life as a photojournalist working for newspapers in Virginia, spending 23 years as a photo editor at The Washington Post.

Ray has been a North Beach, MD, resident since the early 1990’s, raising three children and renovating a house. He now splits his time between North Beach and Nantucket, MA. Both areas are rich for photography.

The Chesapeake Bay has always been a special place for Ray throughout his life. He has chronicled the scenes, boats, people and wildlife of the region.

Calvert Library Board Applications Being Accepted (press release)

Calvert Library Board Applications Being Accepted

November 2, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Robyn Truslow
410-535-0291

Calvert Library announces two pending vacancies on the Calvert Board of Library Trustees (BOLT). These Board vacancies have been created by the end of the term of sitting Trustees who are eligible for and seeking re-appointment.  However, all qualified applicants are welcome and all candidates will be assessed using the same criteria.  Applications are accepted through November 15, 2022.

The responsibilities of the Board of Library Trustees are established by State Code. The Board is responsible for governance and fiscal oversight; approving library policies and budget and overseeing the work of the Executive Director. The Board is comprised of 7 community members who volunteer their time and support to the library. Officers include President, Vice President and Secretary. Responsibilities include monthly meetings; the board currently meets at 4:00pm on third Tuesdays. Once a quarter, meetings are held in person at one of the four library locations and the remainder of the meetings are held virtually on Zoom. In addition to regular meetings, there is an annual meeting of the Southern Maryland Regional Library Association Corporation that Board members are invited to attend and an annual Citizens for Maryland Libraries meeting generally held on a Saturday in October.

Service on the BOLT is a volunteer public office with a normal appointment term of five years.  The open terms begin in January 2023 and lasts through December of 2028. While State law provides that individuals may serve more than one term (but not more than two full terms in succession), each term is separate and requires application, nomination by the Board and appointment by the Board of County Commissioners.  Appointment to one term does not create an entitlement to serve more than one term.  The Board appreciates that experience on the Board is a significant factor to be considered, but recognizes that other factors may also be significant including, but not limited to: the quality of past performance; current Board composition; specific current needs of the Board; and, the comparative qualifications of all applicants.  Additionally, since Board membership is a privilege, all eligible County citizen should have equal access to consideration for this privilege.

Details and a link to the online application can be found at https://calvertlibrary.info/about-us/board-of-trustees/meet-the-board/

Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch Groundbreaking Announcement (press release)

Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch Groundbreaking Announcement

May 12, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Robyn Truslow
410-535-0291

On Tuesday, April 26, the construction contract for a new Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch was awarded to Scheibel Construction of Huntingtown, MD and a new building is one step closer.  The groundbreaking is scheduled for Tuesday, May 24, at 2pm.  The ceremony will take place at 5th Street & Chesapeake Ave, North Beach.   Executive Director of Calvert Library, Carrie Willson said, “We’re so excited to move forward with this collaborative project to bring a 21st century library to the Twin Beaches area.  We have had so much support for this building.  In addition to the county commitment to build this library, we have already been granted $4.8 million through Maryland State Library Capital Grant program. North Beach contributed a $250,000 Community Development Grant to the design process as well as donating the fabulous land for the project. We look forward to partnering with every library lover as Calvert Library Foundation will soon kick off a fundraising campaign to add the extra touches to this building that our community wants.”

Groundbreaking parking will be very limited but those interested in attending are welcome and can get more information on Calvert Library’s events calendar.

This new community space will be almost four times the size of the current library in Chesapeake Beach.  Features of the new building will include a large meeting room that can be subdivided into two smaller 50-person meeting rooms, study space, a maker space, dedicated children’s and teen spaces, terraces with a view of the Chesapeake Bay and parking under the building. Calvert Library expects to welcome the community to the new library’s grand opening in the winter of 2024.

Colimore Architects was awarded a contract for architecture and engineering for the new Twin Beaches Branch in February of 2020. Colimore contracted with HBM Architects to do the library-specific interior design for the project. Community input was gathered during focus groups and meetings during the last several years and the building has been carefully planned to meet the community’s growing needs. Thus far, funding for the new library has been provided by Calvert County, a variety of grants and donations from the Calvert Library Foundation and Friends of Calvert Library. There are still donation opportunities available. If you would like information, please contact Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Calvert Library Lifts Mask Requirement (press release)

Calvert Library Lifts Mask Requirement

March 1, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Robyn Truslow
410-535-0291

Calvert Library’s mask requirement has been lifted as of Saturday, February 26, 2022.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) introduced new COVID-19 Community Levels on Friday, February 25, 2022. Their guidance now focuses on what prevention strategies are recommended county by county. A number of nationwide factors play into the updated recommendations. There is a lower rate of hospital admissions.  High quality masks are more widely available to those that need them.  There are also more effective treatments to reduce severe outcomes from COVID and while Calvert is still somewhat challenged in obtaining these treatments, production is expected to increase which should make them more readily available locally.

Due to these changes, the CDC has adjusted the metric for “low” to 200 cases per 100,000 individuals. Per Calvert County Health Department report on Friday, February 25, Calvert County was at 105 cases per 100,000 so is now considered to require low prevention strategies. For more information, see the CDC description of recommended prevention for each status https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/covid-by-county.html.

Indoor and Outdoor Storytime will begin again the week of March 14.  Imagination Stations, toys and interactives for little ones to engage in imaginative play, should re-open in the same timeframe.

High quality masks are still available at Calvert Library locations for those who need them. The CDC recommends mask-wearing for people with symptoms, a positive test or exposure to someone with COVID-19.

Vaccines continue to be available from the Health Department and appointments are easy to get through https://www.calvertcountycovid19.com/vaccination or by calling 410-535-5400x388.

Calvert Library COVID Reporting Procedure Changes

January 24, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Robyn Truslow
410-535-0291

Given the pervasiveness of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, Calvert Library will now only send out press releases about COVID-positive staff cases when the Health Department deems that there is a need for contact tracing.  Exposure to COVID-19 is possible for anyone receiving visitors at home or venturing out in the community.  Library visitors are required to mask and library staff work with the public following health and safety protocols that include masking and social distancing with minimal close contact with customers and regular hand washing.  Curbside services continue to be offered at all four locations to customers who prefer that method of delivery.

Please know that the safety of our staff and of the public we serve, is our top priority. We will continue to take the proper precautions and promote social distancing. The CDC continues to recommend that you wear a mask over your nose and mouth when in public spaces, wash your hands frequently with soap and water, avoid touching your face and make sure to practice social distancing by staying at least 6 feet away from others.  If you are feeling ill, please stay home.

We will continue to work together through this difficult time, and we will continue to keep you informed of any new information over the course of this pandemic.
