It is always great fun to celebrate Women’s History month with Calvert Library.  This year, Calvert Library Prince Frederick is hosting award-winning actress Mary Ann Jung performing a living history as Good Queen Bess.  This interactive adventure will be on Tuesday, March 8, at 7 p.m.  Jung’s degree is in British Elizabethan History and she says that Queen Bess is “considered by most to be England’s greatest queen.”

Queen Elizabeth Tudor presided over England's Golden Age of exploration and the arts in the 1500's. So what was life really like in the Renaissance? Her Majesty will astonish the audience with surprising facts about the food, clothes, manners, and pastimes of her realm. If playing football is a crime and roasted peacock is for supper you know Her Majesty is visiting. She even teaches her favorite dance, the galliard.  Be prepared for an educational and entertaining evening.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

The Friends of Calvert Library Spring Pub Quiz is back! On Friday, March 11, at 6:30pm, the doors will open for a night of fun and trivia.  For one night only, the library won’t help you find the answers. The Quizmaster is funny man Michael Gannon, ever popular in MD quiz circles and also the Chief Operating Officer for Support Services at Prince George’s County Memorial Library System.  He is also firmly in the camp of “Rule #1. The Quizmaster is always right!”  You must have a picture ID verifying that you are 21 or older to enter. Teams of up to six people can be registered through the Calvert Library’s online calendar at www.calvertlibrary.info. However, participation is first-paid, first-served, so come to any Calvert Library location and pay your stake so that your team will be ensured a spot in the competition. The fee is $60 per team or $75 at the door if there is still space available. There is a change this year in the prize structure. Instead of only one chance to win, there are three!  The first place team will win $120, second place wins $60 and third place wins $30. There is only space for 16 teams and 20 spectators. Spectators 21 and older can purchase their space ahead of time for $5. It promises to be a highly entertaining evening complete with free snacks, a cash bar, and fun raffles. Donations are welcome. There are lots of rules, some may even be made up on the spot(!), and the format is detailed on the Calvert Library website (www.CalvertLibrary.info). For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Want to be a writer when you grow up but don’t know where to begin?

During spring break, Calvert Library is hosting an interactive creative writing workshop to help get you started on the path to publication.  On Thursday, March 24 from 2:00-4:00 pm, acclaimed young adult authors Jessica Spotswood and J.C. Lillis will lend their expertise at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.

Attendees in grades 5-12 will have the unique opportunity to work with published authors as they participate in writing exercises designed to help them learn about story structure, character development, and dialogue.  There will also be plenty of time for questions in order to provide an insider’s look at the writing process and the publishing industry.

Jessica Spotswood is the author of the historical fantasy trilogy The Cahill Witch Chronicles and the editor of the feminist historical anthology A Tyranny of Petticoats. She lives in Washington, DC and works as a children's library associate for the DC Public Library.  J.C. TEDxCalvertLibraryLive to stream TED Conference (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Many people have discovered the “inspirational fix” TED Talks offer. TED Talks are short thought-provoking presentations and there are thousands of them available to watch online.  TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading” and for their annual conference, TED invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes each. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall and Sir Richard Branson.  For 25 years, TED has been supporting world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives.

To attend one of these TED Conferences in person, there is a rigorous application and a hefty price tag…$8500 this year.  Or you can attend one day via live stream at Calvert Library Prince Frederick for free. TEDxCalvertLibraryLive, an independently organized event, will live stream a full day of the TED 2016 Conference on Wednesday, February 17.  The event takes place in Vancouver so the sessions begin at 11:30am here and will run until the library closes.

This year’s theme is “Dream.”  According to TED organizers, it's time to resurrect the spirit of John Kennedy’s great moonshot challenge of the 1960’s. This year's conference is dedicated to imagineering, invention, innovation … and the courageous dreamers who can bring us with them on their journey. Presenters on Wednesday include the founder of Girls Who Code, a humanitarian fighting extreme poverty and an "augmented reality" innovator.  There are more details online.  The videos from the conference will eventually be available online but if you are cutting edge and don’t want to wait, and if you want to hang out with other interesting cutting edge thinkers, come to the library on February 17.  For more information, call Calvert Library at 410-535-0291.
