Judging from number of customers bringing them in to the library, many people received a tablet, smartphone or an ereader as a holiday gift this year and the gift card for books that they got with it is starting to run out.   That’s okay, as these customers have heard, you can borrow books from Calvert Library on your ereader!  The demand is high so sometimes it takes a little patience for the title you are looking for but there is usually something available that you can use to pass the time with while you wait for the one you put on hold to “arrive.”  There is currently about one copy per six customers on the hold list and the goal is to get that down to one copy per four customers.  Since the books check out for up to two weeks, the wait should almost always be less than twelve weeks.

Calvert Library is part of a statewide consortium that buys ebooks for Maryland library customers to check out on their ereading devices.  As of today, there are nearly 6000 titles available with multiple copies of each.  If you wonder why there needs to be multiple copies of a digital book, maybe you would be interested in attending the ebook workshop at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Tuesday, January 24 at 7pm.  Robyn Truslow will explain how digital rights management works for library ebooks and also tell you how to download those books to your device.  If you would like to attend, please register through the website or by calling 410-535-091 or 301-855-1862.

Getting set up to take advantage of library ebooks does take a little patience the first time but after the initial software is downloaded and your account created, it is even easier than a trip to the library to “pick up” a few books.  Attendees will be walked through the entire process of downloading the software, creating an Adobe Digital Editions account and then checking out an ebook and loading it on an ereader or smartphone.  If you have one, feel free to bring your e-reader, laptop and/or smartphone for hands-on practice.
