You have undoubtedly heard about One Maryland One Book, the project of the Maryland Humanities Council whereby the whole of Maryland is encouraged to read and discuss the same book. This year’s book is The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway and in addition to many copies at the library, there are “wandering” copies floating around the county with messages encouraging you to pick it up, read it, review it online and be entered to win a an iPod Touch.

Calvert County has really embraced this project.  Private discussion groups are using this book as their book of the month, a number of teachers are assigning the book for their students to read and discuss, and of course, Calvert Library is offering many options to engage with the book and really fill out the conversation.  Calvert Library will be hosting the author, Steven Galloway, at Huntingtown High School on Tuesday, October 2 at 7:00pm.  The event is free and open to the public and will include a live cello performance by Zack Branch as well as a teaser for the full production of a Readers’ Theater to be performed by Eye of the Storm Productions (Huntingtown High’s very talented theater group).  The full script will be read at an event open to the public on Tuesday, October 16 at Huntingtown High School.  Zack Branch has composed solo cello versions of the piece featured in the book, Albinoni’s Adagio and communities across the state will be using his recording, made with support from Garrett Music Academy, Caroline County and Maryland Humanities Council, with their Readers’ Theater presentations.

Be sure to check Calvert Library’s full calendar to see all the book discussions being offered.  The first one was already held at Twin Beaches branch with 25 in attendance.  Calvert Library Prince Frederick will also host a showing of the film Welcome to Sarajevo, set in war-torn 1992 Sarajevo and based on Michael Nicholson’s non-fiction book Natasha’s Story about the orphaned children in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the child that he adopted from there.  The film will be shown on Wednesday, October 10 at 6pm.  The next evening, Civil Discourse team at Calvert Library Prince Frederick will host a discussion based on The Cellist of Sarajevo titled “Courage and Unity During Times of War.”  That discussion will be begin at 7pm.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.
