"Vidheha is the youngest person in Nepalese art history to present a full exhibition," wrote Ratopati in 2016 when 3-year-old Vidheha Ranjan presented Early Creations, an exhibition and book containing more than 80 artwork and photos at The Nepal Art Council. Now in North Beach, she presents Giants of This World, a photo exhibition of whales taken on Cape Cod, and elephants in the Terai plains of Nepal at Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch.

Nicole Hurley, the art coordinator, writes: "We are thrilled to have the stunning photographs of Vidheha Ranjan on display at Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch this summer. Vidheha's Giants of This World containing elephant and whale photographs, will bring a sense of joy and wonder. The storytelling from her images connect well to the gallery space in the stacks of our library. It is remarkable to have a talented youth photographer as a member of our community."

Now age eleven, Vidheha presented "I Like My Life" at the Patan Museum and Nepal Tourism Board as an art exhibition and book at the age of 5. Andrea Petrini, director of institutional giving and government affairs at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum commented, "DELIGHTFUL book by Vidheha Ranjan. A beautiful and insightful collection of poignant observations of her country, art and artists, animals, science, music, and the humanity that surrounds her. What better way to share another culture with your own little ones – from one child to another with I Like My Life, packed with great stuff!"

"Songs for Elephants" a photo exhibition followed in 2021 at the Patan Museum and educational establishments across 20 districts. "It is challenging to find a person so young, so gifted. Vidheha has broken difficult boundaries," wrote Kranti Pandey in Samacharpatra's Junkiri. "Vidheha's abilities amaze everyone. She is proficient in art as well as music," Kantipur, Kopila, stated while profiling her.

Editor-in-chief of The Rising Nepal, Bhimsen Thapalia, calls her a "star" and has published many of the 34 articles she has written while Umisha of Kin magazine, UK, said, "…thank you for helping us to create our VSO Kin magazine. [CAUTION: EXTERNAL]

My warmest greetings and many many thank yous!

I am pleased to send you the media kit on Vidheha's exhibition "Giants of This World" that you made possible.

The images are now up at the Twin Beaches Library. Nicole has been particularly warm and supportive as has Stacy. In fact, all and every library team member has been awesome!

Windy Hill Middle School has also been immensely positive and is helping get the word out within their community. Bideha received a shout out in this evening's newsletter and many words of encouragement from Principal Whidden as well as all her teachers, as you may see in the Critics Comment section of the media kit.

This is, without doubt, a great opportunity that you have provided Vidheha and my family (her first exhibition in the United States) and your support will hold great value throughout her life and will be remembered.

Gratefully yours,

Pallav

Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch Celebrates their First Birthday
April 2, 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Robyn Truslow
410-535-0291
Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch is celebrating their first birthday the whole month of April!  They are hosting two big authors, the US Secret Service, Live Action Clue for teens and eight different Makerspace events!
Whether you are high-tech or textile-tactile, you will find a Makerspace event for you… make a button to celebrate the Osprey Festival in North Beach, make some earrings or a wallet, learn about wildlife photography and create Bay-inspired décor with the laser etcher.
If you'd rather listen and learn, put one of the sessions about Internet Safety on your calendar (Thursday, April 10, 6:30pm for adults or Saturday, April 12, 2pm for kids!), come hear author Michael Kauffman's take on the conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln on the anniversary of his death or learn how to support your loved one with PTSD from expert Dr. Elspeth Cameron Ritchie.
Dr. Ritchie brings extensive experience in military and veteran mental health issues, with a distinguished 28-year career in the Army and a focus on forensic psychiatry. Her expertise encompasses the psychological challenges faced by service members, veterans and first responders. PTSD can lead to symptoms such as flashbacks, severe anxiety and uncontrollable thoughts about the event, impacting both the individuals and their loved ones. "PTSD Support for Loved Ones," is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 1pm to 2pm.
Michael Kauffman will present "Finding Something New in an Old Story" on Monday, April 14, 2025 at 6pm. There will be a display of related artifacts at the library for the next two months, as well.  Kauffman's book "American Brutus" used a multidisciplinary approach to studying this history, applying modern criminology, behavioral science, legal reasoning and information technology. It has been praised as a thorough and well-reasoned account of the Lincoln assassination. Kauffman has been described as "legendary" in the field of Lincoln assassination studies and his book was optioned as an HBO miniseries.
The new Twin Beaches Branch opened on April 16, 2024, and has already seen nearly twice the expected visitors.  According to Branch Manager Melissa Gray, the staff has hosted over 122,000 customers, made over 3,000 new library cards, circulated over 200,000 physical items, had over 10,000 computer uses and presented over 700 programs for more than 17, 000 attendees.  Ms. Gray said, "We knew this new space was needed, but the positive reception from our community has been truly overwhelmingly positive. It's gratifying to see so many community members find their way here and how they have made it their new space."

Calvert Library Invites Community Input for Strategic Planning Process

For Immediate Release

February 19, 2025

Calvert Library Invites Community Input for Strategic Planning Process

Calvert Library is embarking on a strategic planning process to shape its services and programs for the next 3-5 years. As part of this effort, the library is seeking input to ensure it continues to meet the evolving needs of our community.

One opportunity for residents to share their ideas will be at screening of the documentary, Free for All: The Public Library, scheduled for Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 6pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick. Hosted in partnership with Friends of Calvert Library, Maryland Public Television, and PBS Independent Lens, this special screening offers a chance to see the documentary before its official debut.

Free for All: The Public Library tells the story of the quiet revolutionaries who made a simple idea happen. From the pioneering women behind the “Free Library Movement” to today's librarians who serve the public despite working in a contentious age of closures and book bans, the film highlights the importance of libraries as civic institutions where everything is free, and the doors are open to all.

Following the film, attendees will have the opportunity to provide input on Calvert Library's future plans and learn how to be effective library advocates. In addition to participating in the discussion, you can also provide feedback through this link (https://qrfy.io/r/DBcDko6Alj).

“Community input is vital as we plan for the future,” said Carrie Willson, Executive Director of Calvert Library. “We want to hear from residents about the resources, programs and services that matter most to them. If you prefer direct engagement over a survey, this event is a great way to get involved and have a voice in shaping our library’s future.”

For more information about the strategic planning process, to register for Free for All: The Public Library, or to access the survey, visit https://calvertlibrary.info  or contact Calvert Library at 410-535-0291.

MD Libraries Together feature author/attorney Michelle Coles on Feb 27 at Calvert Library Prince Frederick

Maryland Libraries Together to Feature Author and Attorney Michelle Coles

For Immediate Release

Contact: Robyn Truslow, 410-535-0291

February 4, 2025 BALTIMORE — Award-winning author and Civil Rights attorney Michelle Coles is set to speak in Calvert County next month as part of a Black History Month celebration organized by Calvert Library and the collaborative Maryland Libraries Together. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on February 27 at Calvert Library Prince Frederick. Space is limited so please register if you plan to attend in person.  It also will be live-streamed.

“Public libraries across Maryland are dedicated to providing their communities with programs and events that enrich lives and inspire curiosity,” said Maryland State Librarian Morgan Lehr Miller. “I’m thrilled they have worked together to bring yet another accomplished author to the state to share important stories and perspectives.”

Coles wrote the award-winning young-adult book Black Was the Ink. The story features Malcolm, a Black teenager from Washington, D.C. whose mother is worried about his safety and sends him to stay with his father’s family on their farm in Mississippi. The state acquired part of the farm through eminent domain years earlier. Now, the state is threatening to seize the rest of it.

In the story, Malcolm ends up getting transported back in time to the Reconstruction Era as his ancestor Cedric, an aide to Senator Hiram Revels, who was one of the first Black members of Congress. Malcolm and readers learn about the Black heroes of the period and how to advocate in the present. The book is an entertaining, inspiring and informative read for teens and adults.

“We’re pleased to bring Ms. Coles to Maryland Libraries Together to shine light on a period of history that is too often told without celebrating Black accomplishments,” said Carrie Willson, Executive Director of Calvert Library. “She does a marvelous job of tying our history to our present and we think this is the perfect event to share statewide.”

Books will be available for sale and signing at the event. Thanks to publisher Lee & Low, Black Was the Ink will be available for checkout online with no waiting during the month of February through the Maryland Digital Library powered by Overdrive/Libby.

The event comes four months after award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor, whose work on the Marvel Black Panther comic book series garnered international acclaim, spoke during a Maryland Libraries Together event at Leonardtown High School. Programming for Maryland Libraries Together is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act administered by the Maryland State Library Agency.

Learn more about the Michelle Coles event on February 27, including how to register and view the livestream, by visiting the Maryland Libraries Together information page on the Maryland State Library Agency website. Prince George’s County Memorial Library System is assisting with streaming and technical services. Seating for the in-person event is limited.
