Download Library Books to your new ereader Workshop (press release)

December 18, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Did you get an ereader for the holidays?  Do you want to save money on ebooks?  Or are you looking for a way to pass time on your commute?  The many advantages of ebooks include the ability to change the print size, the flexibility of downloading from home, and they are automatically returned – which means there are never any overdue charges!  If you are interested in downloading electronic audio books or electronic print books, then our Life Long Learning class, Downloading Books using Overdrive is for you!

Calvert Library is part of a statewide consortium that buys ebooks for Maryland library customers to check out on the ereading device of their preference.    As of today, there are thousands of titles available with multiple copies of each.  If you wonder why there needs to be multiple copies of a digital book, maybe you would be interested in attending the ebook workshop.

The ereader event, Downloading Books using Overdrive, is at Calvert Library, Fairview Branch on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 7pm.  Your friendly librarians will explain how digital rights management works for library ebooks and also tell you how to download those books to your device.  If you would like to attend, please register through the website or by calling 410-257-2101.

Getting set up to take advantage of library ebooks does take a little patience the first time but after the initial software is downloaded and your account created, it is even easier than a trip to the library to “pick up” a few books.  Attendees will be walked through the entire process of downloading the software, creating an Adobe Digital Editions account and then checking out an ebook and loading it on an ereader or smartphone.  If you have one, feel free to bring your e-reader, laptop, tablet or smartphone and your library card for hands-on practice.

(Press release) Fracking Conversation Next Topic in Civil Discourse Series at Calvert Library

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Questions about “fracking?”  Is natural gas hydraulic fracturing the answer to energy independence and job growth or environmental nightmare?  Calvert Library Prince Frederick is hosting a conversation about this controversial process of harvesting natural gas on Tuesday, November 13 at 7pm.  The conversation will be kicked off by participants with various viewpoints and then opened to the audience to share their concerns, questions and thoughts about the process and impact for Southern Maryland.

Guests that have already RSVP’d include Emily Wurth, a Food & Water Watch representative; Delegate Shane Robinson, a representative pushing for a formal ban on “fracking” in Maryland; Douglas Duncan, a scientist with the US Geological Survey; and Steve Everly, a spokesman from the Energy In Depth campaign launched by the Independent Petroleum Association of America which is focused on public education “about the promise and potential of responsibly developing American’s onshore energy resource base.”

This conversation is part of Calvert Library’s Civil Discourse series which has been going on for several years as a partnership with the Calvert County Community Mediation Center, All Saints Episcopal Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Southern Maryland, and other active engaged citizens interested in discussing and learning more about controversial topics that impact our community.  This conversation has further collaboration from Patuxent Riverkeeper, St. Mary’s Watershed Association and the Tidewater Land Trust.

For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 or check the website at calvert.lib.md.us

Pub Quiz at Calvert Library (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

For one night only, the library won’t help you find the answers.  But that won’t stop us from asking plenty of tough questions!  The Friends of Calvert Library are sponsoring their second Pub Quiz Night as a fundraiser on Friday, November 16.  The Calvert Library Prince Frederick doors open at 6:30pm and the quiz begins promptly at 7pm.  The Quizmaster is JR Mathers and he is firmly in the camp of “Rule #1.  The Quizmaster is always right!”  You must have a picture ID verifying that you are 21 or older to enter.  Teams of up to six people can be added to the waiting list through the Calvert Library online calendar at calvert.lib.md.us. You must come to any Calvert Library location to pay in order for the team to be accepted as a competing team, so participation is based on a first-paid, first-served basis.  The fee is $60 per team or $75 at the door if there is still space available.  The winning team will receive $300.  There is only space for 16 teams and 20 spectators.  Eight teams have registered already.  It should be a fun night and spectators 21 and older can also purchase their space ahead of time for $5.  There will be free snacks, a cash bar and donations are welcome.  There are lots of rules, some may even be made up on the spot(!), and the format is detailed on the Calvert Library website (calvert.lib.md.us).  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.
