Time to Think About Your Garden!
There is a chill in the air and the smell of snow looming but it is the time of year to start your garden! Probably not planting at the moment, but certainly perusing the seed catalogs and settling on your picks for the year and planning out your crop rotation. It is also time to consider your soil and how you can keep the precious topsoil that nurtures your garden and in turn instills all those good vitamins and minerals in the vegetables you grow. Master Gardener RT West will kick off the Garden Smarter series at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Saturday, January 18 at 10am with Saving your Topsoil and Water. Janet Kennedy will follow that up on January 25 with a presentation on Ponds and Water Features at the Community Resources Building on Duke Street. After that, keep an eye out for two to four free workshops a month sponsored by Calvert County Master Gardeners, University of Maryland Extension and Calvert Library. Some will be held at the Community Resources Building and others will be at Calvert Library locations: Prince Frederick, Twin Beaches Branch, Fairview Branch and Southern Branch. Topics will include propagation, no-till methods, rain gardens, companion and succession planting, beneficial insects, herbs, shade gardening, invasive plant ID, garden pests and diseases, food preservation, composting, bulbs and more!
Be part of the buy local, eat local movement and grow your own! Most of the sessions are on Saturday mornings from 10-11:30am so you have time to play in your garden before coming in for a learning break. The Master Gardeners often provide great door prizes like seedlings and they always provide excellent information, so put this series on your calendar. And if you had a great garden last year and still have bounty in your larder, come share it at the Calvert Eats Local potluck scheduled for 6:30pm on Monday, January 27 at Calvert Library Prince Frederick. Bring your plate, utensils, cup and napkin for a truly “green” experience!
