NEWS RELEASE for Immediate Release

CHRIS HALEY COMING TO NORTH BEACH

The Bayside History Museum and Calvert Library proudly announce a lecture to be held on Sunday, January 19th, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the North Beach Town Hall, 9036 Bay Avenue, North Beach, Maryland given by Mr. Chris Haley.

Mr. Haley is the nephew of Alex Haley, who wrote the famous Pulitzer Prize winning book, Roots: The Saga of an American Family, which went on to become the acclaimed television mini-series, Roots.    Chris Haley is the Director of the Study of Slavery in Maryland at the Maryland State Archives research center.  He has also served on the board of the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation.

Grace Mary Brady, Director of the Bayside History Museum, said, “What an honor it is to host a lecture given by someone as world renown as Mr. Haley.”   He leads the field as a genealogist, actor, singer, writer, historian, producer, director, motivational speaker and radio talk show host.

One of Haley’s biggest accomplishments is promoting the Underground Railroad Educational and Cultural program.  The goal of this program is to explore the legacy of the Underground Railroad using primary documents available at the Maryland State Archives and to discover unknown “heroes” of slave flight and resistance.

No stranger to Calvert County, last April Haley spoke to a group of eighth-graders from Plum Point Middle School.  He began his talk by having one of the students read an 1829 newspaper clipping about one of the runaway slaves who lived on a plantation located on Plumb (Plum) Point Road in Huntingtown.

On the eve of the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, come learn about the struggle for freedom as presented by Chris Haley.  “It is Calvert Library’s pleasure to partner with the Bayside History Museum to bring this program to North Beach.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about our shared heritage and to engage with the history of slavery and the struggle for freedom in our county and in our country.” said Carrie Plymire, Director of Calvert Library.
