Local history at Calvert Library (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 14, 2014                                                                                             Robyn Truslow

                                                                                                                        410-535-0291

Local History at the Library

Calvert Library begins a collection of events with an emphasis on local black history by hosting presentation by Chris Haley’s talk Freedom through Flight with the Bayside History Museum at North Beach Town Hall at 2pm on Sunday, January 19, the eve of Martin Luther King Day.  The opportunity to learn more continues throughout February.  The focus is on longtime Southern Maryland African American families. Did you know that surnames like Parran, Parker, Jones, Somerville, Gross, Weems, Mackall, Hance, Gray, Gantt, Mason, Smith, and Dares date back in Calvert County black and white families for more than 200 years?

On Thursday, February 6, African American History and Culture Commissioner Michael Kent will discuss research options and offer tips for discovering family histories. Kent is an expert in local African American genealogy.  Several websites, including Ancestry Library Edition and Heritage Quest Online will be showcased.  This event starts at 7:00pm and will run for 90 minutes at the Calvert Library Prince Frederick.

Thanks to funding from the Maryland Humanities Council and the Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission, on Saturday, February 8, the library will host Mike Dixon, social history professor and historian.  At 2pm, he will present Stories of Everyday People in the War of 1812 which will include unpublished stories of slaves, African Americans and other everyday people unrepresented in the history books.  Other local War of 1812 stories will be included in an exhibit titled, The Enemy at Our Door!  The War of 1812 in Southern Maryland on display in the library lobby the month of February.

The exhibit was created through the efforts of a regional 1812 Committee with membership from the three counties – Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s – as well as the Southern Maryland Heritage Area and representatives from the Calvert Marine Museum, Sotterley Plantation and Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum.  Funding came from the National Park Service’s Star Spangled Banner Trail for the exhibit, which was researched and written by Mr. Krimmel. The exhibit, which is built to travel and consists of two panels, front and back, is free and available for use by qualified sites desiring to take part in the year of events.

On Tuesday, February 25, at 7pm, come hear from some of the prominent black families of the county themselves as interviewed by Calvert County students.  This promises to be a unique opportunity for studying our shared Living Local History.  Family members we expect to hear from include Martha Foote Mackall, Francine Hutchins Clark, Ronald Clark, Shawn Harrod, Pamela Johnson, Michael Johnson and others.  Also that evening, Professor Nellie Pharr-Maletta will share some historical context and background and sociologist Dr. Larry Hunt will explain the research he is conducting for All Saints Church.  A Project to Reconcile our Past was initiated by a group of parishioners to research the role of slavery and the African American community in the history of All Saints.  The goal of the project is to build a more understanding community in Southern Maryland.

Mr. Haley’s presentation will be held at the North Beach Town Hall.  The rest of these events and exhibit will be held at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  For more information visit us at www.calvert.lib.md.us or call (410) 535-0291/(301) 855-1862.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calvert Library to host Pushing the Limits- reading, viewing and discussion series

Calvert Library Prince Frederick will host a free four-part reading, viewing and discussion series for adults called Pushing the Limits.  The library is one of 75 rural public libraries nationwide receiving grants to host the series.  Pushing the Limits brings together books and video featuring authors, scientists and everyday people who thrive on exploring the natural world.

Since the beginning of time, humans have imagined and achieved ways to push the boundaries of the physical world.  We want to be stronger, smarter, and more aware, and we create stories to bring those dreams to life.  But many of those stories are no longer just stories; and with great new advances in science and technology, we are finding ways in which all of us are able to push the limits every day.

The Pushing the Limits program will explore these ideas in scientist-led discussions of recommended popular books as well as feature film quality videos of author interviews and human interest stories. The overarching theme is one of real people, real stories and real science.

All programs will be held at Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 7pm.  Come at 6:30pm if you are interested in exploring some STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) toys and tools.  Events will be held February through May, on the first Monday of each month, on the following topics and books:

           - February 3, SURVIVAL:  Clive Cussler, Arctic Drift led by Lora Harris

- March 3, NATURE:  T.C. Boyle, When the Killing's Done led by Stephen Godfrey

           - April 7, KNOWLEDGE:  Jean Auel, The Land of Painted Caves led by Dave Bohaska

- May 5, CONNECTION:  Erik Larson, Thunderstruck led by Evelyn Eshelman

This national program has been developed by a team of library professionals, scientists, and filmmakers. Their organizations include Dartmouth College, the Association for Rural and Small Libraries, the Califa Group (a California-based library consortium), Dawson Media Group, and Oregon State University-- with generous funding from the National Science Foundation.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Garden Smarter Series Kicks Off! (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 7, 2014

Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Time to Think About Your Garden!

There is a chill in the air and the smell of snow looming but it is the time of year to start your garden!  Probably not planting at the moment, but certainly perusing the seed catalogs and settling on your picks for the year and planning out your crop rotation.  It is also time to consider your soil and how you can keep the precious topsoil that nurtures your garden and in turn instills all those good vitamins and minerals in the vegetables you grow.  Master Gardener RT West will kick off the Garden Smarter series at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Saturday, January 18 at 10am with Saving your Topsoil and Water.  Janet Kennedy will follow that up on January 25 with a presentation on Ponds and Water Features at the Community Resources Building on Duke Street.  After that, keep an eye out for two to four free workshops a month sponsored by Calvert County Master Gardeners, University of Maryland Extension and Calvert Library. Some will be held at the Community Resources Building and others will be at Calvert Library locations: Prince Frederick, Twin Beaches Branch, Fairview Branch and Southern Branch.  Topics will include propagation, no-till methods, rain gardens, companion and succession planting, beneficial insects, herbs, shade gardening, invasive plant ID, garden pests and diseases, food preservation, composting, bulbs and more!

Be part of the buy local, eat local movement and grow your own!  Most of the sessions are on Saturday mornings from 10-11:30am so you have time to play in your garden before coming in for a learning break.  The Master Gardeners often provide great door prizes like seedlings and they always provide excellent information, so put this series on your calendar.  And if you had a great garden last year and still have bounty in your larder, come share it at the Calvert Eats Local potluck scheduled for 6:30pm on Monday, January 27 at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  Bring your plate, utensils, cup and napkin for a truly “green” experience!

For details about this series, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Writing by Psyche Workshop (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 3, 2014

If you are a writer or interested in becoming a writer, Calvert Library Prince Frederick is offering a very special workshop for you on Thursday, January 16, at 7pm.  Solid character development is crucial to good writing.  Corrie Howe, writer and MBTI® Practitioner, will introduce a method of character creation and development that uses the Myers-Briggs personality test.  Participants will also use the Myers-Briggs to help understand their own writing technique and hurdles.

Over a hundred years of research has gone into C.G. Jung’s theory that the entire population of the world can be characterized by one of sixteen different personality types. Isabel Myers and Katherine Briggs developed the Myers-Briggs (also known as MBTI®), a psychological instrument to help people determine which personality type best describes them.

Writers can take advantage of this wealth of research behind both Jung and MBTI® to build believable characters. Each of the sixteen different types has its own way of collecting information, making decisions and relating to others and their outside world. As one local writer noted, what is fun about knowing the basic personality types, is the ability to “break the rules” and have the character do something out of – well, character.

Corrie Howe’s workshop will share the basic theory behind the personality types which authors can apply in two practical ways following the training.

First, the writer will have sixteen “skeletons” to take away from the workshop and simply give them a name, eye color and back story. A writer can tap into all the available research on MBTI® personalities to find out what kinds of clothes they are likely to wear, cars they drive, careers they pursue and even how they will react in love, in bed and under stress.

Next, Howe will use Anne Loomis’ book Write from the Start as a foundation to help authors narrow down their own personality type and then discover where they may stumble in the writing process. Howe will provide some appropriate tools which work better for the different personality types during four stages of the writing process.

You do not have to take the MBTI®  or know your personality type to benefit from the workshop.

For more information, call Robyn Truslow at Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

NEWS RELEASE for Immediate Release

CHRIS HALEY COMING TO NORTH BEACH

The Bayside History Museum and Calvert Library proudly announce a lecture to be held on Sunday, January 19th, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the North Beach Town Hall, 9036 Bay Avenue, North Beach, Maryland given by Mr. Chris Haley.

Mr. Haley is the nephew of Alex Haley, who wrote the famous Pulitzer Prize winning book, Roots: The Saga of an American Family, which went on to become the acclaimed television mini-series, Roots.    Chris Haley is the Director of the Study of Slavery in Maryland at the Maryland State Archives research center.  He has also served on the board of the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation.

Grace Mary Brady, Director of the Bayside History Museum, said, “What an honor it is to host a lecture given by someone as world renown as Mr. Haley.”   He leads the field as a genealogist, actor, singer, writer, historian, producer, director, motivational speaker and radio talk show host.

One of Haley’s biggest accomplishments is promoting the Underground Railroad Educational and Cultural program.  The goal of this program is to explore the legacy of the Underground Railroad using primary documents available at the Maryland State Archives and to discover unknown “heroes” of slave flight and resistance.

No stranger to Calvert County, last April Haley spoke to a group of eighth-graders from Plum Point Middle School.  He began his talk by having one of the students read an 1829 newspaper clipping about one of the runaway slaves who lived on a plantation located on Plumb (Plum) Point Road in Huntingtown.

On the eve of the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, come learn about the struggle for freedom as presented by Chris Haley.  “It is Calvert Library’s pleasure to partner with the Bayside History Museum to bring this program to North Beach.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about our shared heritage and to engage with the history of slavery and the struggle for freedom in our county and in our country.” said Carrie Plymire, Director of Calvert Library.

For more information, contact Grace Mary Brady of Bayside History Museum at 410-610-5970 or Robyn Truslow, Calvert Library, at 410-535-0291.
