Calvert Library Prince Frederick is once again hosting an excellent exhibit. This one is featuring the work of Herb Block, one of the world’s best known, most admired and perhaps most feared political cartoonists. For 72 years, Block illustrated the political history of America, fighting against the abuse of power and celebrating democracy. The exhibit will be available through November, Monday through Thursday, 9am to 9pm, Friday, noon to 5pm and Saturday, 9am to 5pm except for holidays. Already, the library is getting good feedback about the exhibit. Library customer Virginia Reinecke remembers meeting Herb Block. She said, "It's worth a trip to the library just to see this exhibit. Any political persuasion will enjoy this display!" Reference Supervisor Sarah Avant said that already she has had more than ten customers express how timely the exhibit is…one said, “He could be writing these commentaries today!”
Herblock, as he signed his work, received three Pulitzer Prizes and shared a fourth for his work related to the Watergate scandal. He also won the Presidential Medal of Freedom which is the highest civilian honor the government can award. While his work could be quite acerbic, Block was described as a gentle, quiet man with a powerful commitment to bring justice to the world.
In addition to the exhibit, the library will be bringing Dr. Chretien Guidry to speak about Herblock’s work on Tuesday, October 13 at 7pm. If you are interested in history, politics, Herblock, political cartoons or just want to learn something new in an interactive setting, don’t miss this event. Dr. Guidry has been teaching at the College of Southern Maryland for 17 years and is a very popular professor. He consistently scores very high on RateMyProfessor.com and currently carries a 4.9 out of 5.0. Dr. Guidry earned his Bachelor’s Degree in history from the University of Maryland, a Master’s in education from Marymount University and a Doctorate in community college education (specialty area in history) from George Mason University.
For those interested in learning more about Herblock, on Monday, November 23, at 6:30pm, the library will be showing Herblock: The Black & the White, an HBO documentary directed by Michael Stevens. Victor Navaksy, former publisher of The Nation said, “A must see movie for anyone who cares about cultural and political commentary, and a lot of fun to watch, too.”
You may find copies of Herb Block’s book Herblock: A Cartoonist’s Life floating around the county awaiting discovery. Take it, have a look and pass it on…or at least let others know about the exhibit! There will be a copy given away as a door prize at each related event as well so if you can’t find one, you have another chance!
