Did you get your Star Wars fix and need another science fiction film to get you through winter?  Join Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Wednesday, January 6, at 6pm for the award-winning film companion to Kip Thorne’s book The Science of Interstellar. The film tells a story of interstellar travel prompted by drought and famine on Earth. Themes of family, ethics, science, time limitations, faith and love make this an eminently discussable movie and an overall great film to watch.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Time to Think About Your Garden!

With the wacky weather this winter, you might have volunteer cilantro sprouting in your garden and are still eating broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and greens!  Usually, this is the quiet time of year for gardeners when you are perusing seed catalogs and planning your layout.  Regardless, it is a great time of year to take advantage of the Garden Smarter series hosted at Calvert Library and led by the Calvert County Master Gardeners. The first session is Saturday, January 9 at 10am at Calvert Library Prince Frederick and Lucy Muehleisen will be teaching “Companion Planting.”  No, that’s not growing your own soul mate…but it is creating synergy for your plants.  You will learn about positive symbiotic crop relationships, how to keep insect pests away while attracting beneficial insects, how to enhance the health of garden soil and generally how to grow great tasting vegetables.  Each Garden Smarter workshop is free to the public and there are often wonderful giveaways.  For instance, on Saturday, January 23 at Calvert Library Prince Frederick from 10am to 1pm, there will be a seed swap.  Whether you saved seeds from your garden, have leftovers from seed packets, or are looking for seeds, the 2nd Annual Calvert Seed Swap is the place to be! Plants and cuttings welcome. Heirloom seeds especially welcome.  Please be sure to carefully label your gathered seeds with as much detail as you can.  Back by popular demand, Bill Santiff will host a workshop on how to build an Herb Spiral on January 30.  This is just the first month of a year of great workshops held in various locations throughout the county. Check out the library website (calvert.lib.md.us/gardensmarter.html) for the whole schedule and put your favorites on the calendar.

If you are growing your own food, you are probably a foodie and possibly a locavore so you might also be interested in joining Calvert Eats Local. You can join for free by contacting Robyn Truslow at Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291.  The winter potluck is Monday, January 25 at 6:30pm.  Bring your plate, utensils, cup and napkin for a truly “green” experience!

For details, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

If you or a loved one made a mistake that resulted in a minor criminal record, you might be interested to know that a new law has gone into effect that can help get that item expunged or at least shielded from potential employers.  In partnership with the Calvert County NAACP, Calvert Library Prince Frederick is hosting a speaker from the State’s Attorney’s office who can explain the application process and how the new law works.  The free event will be held on Thursday, December 10 at 7pm.  Often, people who have been arrested but never found guilty find that they face barriers to getting housing and jobs.  Going through the expungement process can help.  There are also certain misdemeanor convictions that can now be shielded from public access.  For more information about the event, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On Wednesday, November 4, 2015, come to Calvert Library Prince Frederick to watch what is generally agreed upon as the best political film of all time.  Based on the book All the President’s Men and starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as dynamic journalistic duo Woodward and Bernstein, the film covers the details of the Watergate scandal that leads to President Nixon’s resignation.  It is the perfect film to watch on a November 4 when you are watching the polls and it is even better timing in that the library is also hosting an exhibit featuring political cartoonist Herb Block’s work.  Block, Woodward and Bernstein were part of the main team that won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1973 for their investigation of the Watergate scandal.  Lights go down at 6:00pm and the film will be followed by a short discussion ending by 8:30pm. Movie popcorn courtesy of Apex Cinemas will be available.  For more information call Robyn Truslow at (410) 535-0291 or (301) 855-1862.

Calvert Library receives Curiosity Creates Grant (press release)

October 19, 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Calvert Library is the recipient of a $7,500 Curiosity Creates grant from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) to support creativity programming.  Over 400 United States libraries applied and 79 grants were awarded.  The funding was made possible by a generous donation from Disney.  Other Maryland libraries receiving grants include Baltimore County, Carroll County and St. Mary’s County.

As noted by ALSC president, Andrew Medlar, “Children are naturally curious and the act of creating is vital to their development, so ALSC is particularly grateful to Disney and especially excited to offer this incredible opportunity to support our members’ work in public libraries, where families can engage their creativity unlike anyplace else in the community.”

According to Calvert Library Director Carrie Plymire, “Creativity is a critical skill needed to survive in our world where innovation is king.  Creativity allows us to recognize needs, to see challenges in a new light and to problem-solve with fresh approaches. Fortunately, research has now demonstrated that creativity can be taught.  That’s what we’re doing at the library.”

Calvert Library is partnering with PaxSpace, Inc. to offer a four-part series of classes to teach the components of creativity—imagination, originality, flexibility, decision-making, communication, self-expression, collaboration, motivation, action and movement.   Plymire said, “We’ve developed a great partnership with PaxSpace and love the fun their members are able to bring to learning.  Keeping learning fun and driving curiosity are important to Calvert Library so it was a natural partnership.” PaxSpace is a nonprofit, member-operated Makerspace based in California, MD. They offer collaborative workspaces, tools and equipment related to art and technology.  Their location currently houses electronics space, wood shop space and metal shop space.  Their members provide inexpensive classes open to the community on tools, computer coding, 3D design software and more.

Some examples of easy activities to encourage creativity are creating a list of as many crazy uses as you can think of for a paper clip, telling The Three Little Pigs from the wolf’s perspective, creating make-believe worlds complete with new rules for physics, or coming up with ways that two seemingly very different things are alike, like cats and icebergs.  Each of these activities helps develop a component of creativity and may appear in the Curiosity Workshop series.

In addition to funding the series, the Curiosity Creates grant will allow Calvert Library to purchase a wide variety of toys, materials and prototyping tools that will encourage all ages to give their creativity free reign. Some of the items expected to be featured in this Curiosity Collection include Keva planks, Raspberry pis, Lego Mindstorms, SparkFun Inventors’ Kit, graph paper, duct tape, Arduinos and even a 3D printer. To stimulate the creative process, there will be a Challenge Notebook that will include a variety of scenarios for which visitors will be able to offer solutions, perhaps prototyping with the materials in the Curiosity Collection.  The challenges might be real-world like “Come up with five ways to keep deer out of the garden and share the pros and cons of each way”; or they may be more futuristic like “Your world is flooded. What will your living arrangements look like?  How will you feed yourself?”  Library customers will be encouraged to add their own challenges to the notebook.  Exciting challenges and solutions will be posted on the library Facebook page.  And while the grant focuses on ages 6 to 14, Calvert Library is encouraging innovators of all ages to join in.

Plymire added, “The library has always provided resources for problem-solving, whether it be for individuals or community. We start as early as infancy with our Imagination Stations which encourage creative play.  We continue with lifelong learning opportunities for all ages.  With this project, we’re taking it a couple steps further.”  According to the research paper on which the curriculum for the Curiosity Workshop series is based, children, especially before 4th grade, are actually better able than adults to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to sticky problems.  Calvert Library Youth Coordinator Beverly Allyn Izzi puts the research in layman’s terms. “Young children are much less influenced by peer pressure and getting the answer ‘right.’ That’s why a five-year-old can carry on a detailed conversation at a teddy bear tea party and why a big, empty cardboard box can become almost anything!  If we can all learn to nurture creativity by encouraging skills such as flexibility, self-expression, collaboration... we will have a much more resilient and innovative population prepared to solve the problems of the future.”

For more information, contact Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Political Cartoonist Herblock Exhibit at Calvert Library (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Calvert Library Prince Frederick is once again hosting an excellent exhibit.  This one is featuring the work of Herb Block, one of the world’s best known, most admired and perhaps most feared political cartoonists.  For 72 years, Block illustrated the political history of America, fighting against the abuse of power and celebrating democracy.  The exhibit will be available through November, Monday through Thursday, 9am to 9pm, Friday, noon to 5pm and Saturday, 9am to 5pm except for holidays.  Already, the library is getting good feedback about the exhibit. Library customer Virginia Reinecke remembers meeting Herb Block.  She said, "It's worth a trip to the library just to see this exhibit. Any political persuasion will enjoy this display!"  Reference Supervisor Sarah Avant said that already she has had more than ten customers express how timely the exhibit is…one said, “He could be writing these commentaries today!”

Herblock, as he signed his work, received three Pulitzer Prizes and shared a fourth for his work related to the Watergate scandal.  He also won the Presidential Medal of Freedom which is the highest civilian honor the government can award.  While his work could be quite acerbic, Block was described as a gentle, quiet man with a powerful commitment to bring justice to the world.

In addition to the exhibit, the library will be bringing Dr. Chretien Guidry to speak about Herblock’s work on Tuesday, October 13 at 7pm.  If you are interested in history, politics, Herblock, political cartoons or just want to learn something new in an interactive setting, don’t miss this event.  Dr. Guidry has been teaching at the College of Southern Maryland for 17 years and is a very popular professor.   He consistently scores very high on RateMyProfessor.com and currently carries a 4.9 out of 5.0.  Dr. Guidry earned his Bachelor’s Degree in history from the University of Maryland, a Master’s in education from Marymount University and a Doctorate in community college education (specialty area in history) from George Mason University.

For those interested in learning more about Herblock, on Monday, November 23, at 6:30pm, the library will be showing Herblock: The Black & the White, an HBO documentary directed by Michael Stevens. Victor Navaksy, former publisher of The Nation said, “A must see movie for anyone who cares about cultural and political commentary, and a lot of fun to watch, too.”

You may find copies of Herb Block’s book Herblock: A Cartoonist’s Life floating around the county awaiting discovery.  Take it, have a look and pass it on…or at least let others know about the exhibit!  There will be a copy given away as a door prize at each related event as well so if you can’t find one, you have another chance!  For more information about this exhibit or these events, contact Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Minecraft at Calvert Library (press release)

Calvert Library is “your destination for imagination, information, inspiration”….and Minecraft?! According to Emilia Lee, Public Services Librarian and head of the Minecraft team, “At Calvert Library we offer Minecraft as a learning tool for our customers. All of our Minecraft events are meant to facilitate learning through trial and error and teamwork.” Thanks to a grant provided by the Division of Library Development and Services through the Maryland State Department of Education, all Calvert Library locations are equipped with Minecraft.edu licenses and servers, and customers can log on to play any time or drop in to one of our special events.
This fall, Calvert Library Fairview Branch will host weekly drop in events on Monday afternoons from 3:30-5pm.  There will be guided construction and crafting with a different project each week. These events are for beginners and experienced players alike. Bring a friend, or make some new ones. No registration required.
For the uninitiated, Minecraft, a video game reminiscent of Legos, is full of opportunities to manipulate the virtual world around you to create and survive. While Minecraft is a video game, experts (including Calvert Librarians) agree that there is an immense amount of educational value in it. The game requires you to think outside the box and learn how to function in a different world. Minecraft teaches by direct interaction with the player, and once you have learned the basics, you have the freedom to experiment and try anything. Logging into a world that’s in Survival Mode will quickly teach the player about scarcity and the value of a resource rich environment. If the player can’t adapt to the game world quickly enough, they will die. Thankfully, you can always log back in and try again!
Players at the library can be seen working together to build huge structures, fight off monsters, and farm melons in five different worlds the library provides. These activities not only teach spatial awareness, basic circuitry, physics and geometric design, but also collaboration and communication. The library is a strong believer in this kind of supported hands-on learning, providing a chance for players to attempt new things in a space where they can ask for help.  Most librarians aren’t Minecraft experts but they do know how to find the answers. More often than not, other players are the best resource for questions and problems, and thankfully in the library, other players are rarely in short supply.
In John Paul Gee’s article “Good Video Games and Good Learning,” he talks about the value of a game in terms of interaction. “Games do talk back. In fact, nothing happens until a player acts and makes decisions. Then the game reacts, giving the player feedback and new problems.” Minecraft is an excellent example of learning through interactivity. Each game is a constantly evolving tool that develops as you push it, and encourages experimentation, creativity and cooperation.
Stop in to any Calvert Library location for free play, and don’t forget to drop in to the Fairview Branch’s guided building projects on Mondays!  For more information call 410-535-0291.

CALVERT LIBRARY PARTNERS WITH END HUNGER IN CALVERT COUNTY TO HOST BOOK DISCUSSION AND TEAM BUILDING EXPERIENCE

Event will feature The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and
Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and
food sorting to be distributed to End Hunger Partner Food Pantries

Calvert Library has partnered with End Hunger In Calvert County to host a book discussion and volunteer opportunity on Tuesday, September 29 from 7-8:30PM at the End Hunger Warehouse in Prince Frederick.

That evening, individuals will discuss The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by James Brown. Following the discussion participants will then experience first-hand the difference teamwork makes as together they sort food items to distribute to End Hunger Partner Food Pantries.

The Boys in the Boat is the book selected for One Maryland One Book this year and the whole state is being asked to read it and talk about it.  According to Calvert Library Director Carrie Plymire, “This year’s book reminds me of several aspects of our new strategic plan.  The theme of teamwork is the obvious conjunction, but The Boys in the Boat also speaks to one of the community needs that we heard while developing our new strategic plan; a desire to give back to the community. It made perfect sense to partner with an organization who can give our customers a chance to contribute to the community through teamwork.”

“End Hunger In Calvert County is proud to be partnering with Calvert Library for The Boys in the Boat book discussion,” says Jacqueline Miller, president of End Hunger In Calvert County. “These are the type of community connections that make a charity personal for people. The library is giving individuals the opportunity to participate in a   practical teambuilding experience in a way that makes a difference in their own community.”

Space for the event is limited to 15 people and registration is required.  Recommended for adults and youth ages 14 and up.  To register, go to the Calvert Library website at calvert.lib.md.us/events.html and click on One Maryland One Book or call 410-535-0291 (Location: End Hunger Warehouse, 141 Schooner Lane, Prince Frederick, MD 20678).

The Boys in the Boat is a about more than just the 1936 Olympics. It’s a story about the human spirit, overcoming adversity, poverty, hunger, family relationships, romance, and national and world politics. It promises to be an absorbing, worthwhile read even for those who have no interest in the sport of crew.  There are other discussions of the book scheduled throughout September and October.  Monday, September 14 there is one at the Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch at 7pm.  Tuesday, September 15 there is one at Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 7pm.  There will be a discussion and canoe trip on Sunday, October 11 in partnership with the American Chestnut Land Trust.  Other related writing workshops and discussions take place in October.  Check the library website for details and registration.

At the time of press, partners for the event include:
