With the frequent reports that another password database has been cracked and big retailers’ credit cards files have been hacked, we are all a bit worried about identity theft.  On Saturday, March 8 at 2pm, Calvert Library Prince Frederick is hosting a workshop to help you protect your identity.   Presenter Isabel Cumming, while serving on the Governor’s Commission on Identity Theft, was instrumental in passing the laws that help fight identity crime here in Maryland.  Attendees will receive handouts and informational DVDs and will learn what steps to take to avoid becoming a victim.  The best way to fight identity theft is knowledge and this lecture gives you the tools to guard your most valuable asset—your identity.

Isabel Mercedes Cumming is a world traveled lecturer on identity theft and white collar crimes.  Currently, she is the Assistant Inspector General of Investigations for the Washington Metro system.  For the prior twenty years she was a prosecutor in Maryland.  Her jurisdictions included the State of Maryland, Baltimore City and, for the last seven years of being a prosecutor, Prince George’s County where she was the Chief of Special Prosecutions and Financial Crimes.  Her lectures on ID Theft and her prosecution record have earned her the Top Fraud Fighter in Maryland for 2003, Top Certified Fraud Examiner in the world in 2006, and she has been named one of the Top 100 Women in Maryland three times.

Isabel has an undergraduate degree from James Madison University in accounting, a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Baltimore and a Juris Doctorate with honors from the University of Baltimore School of Law.  Lastly, Isabel serves as the President-elect of the Calvert County Bar Association and associate member of the Calvert County Commission on Women.  She resides in Lusby on an alpaca farm with her husband and four teenage boys.
