Calvert Library Southern Branch to Launch Monthly Song Circle

Are you looking for opportunities to play, sing, and hear different kinds of folk music?  Calvert Library Southern Branch will host monthly folk music get-togethers beginning Wednesday, March 26, 2014, 7:00-8:30pm.  These “song circles” encourage singer-musicians to share and learn music with each other.  The goal, in the words of the late Pete Seeger, is “to put a song on people’s lips, instead of just in their ears.”

Join the circle each month for a different theme or genre of acoustic folk music. Our first gathering will focus on Celtic songs and music as we trade songs and take turns choosing or leading a piece. Look for us to also try some bluegrass, old-time Appalachian, and contemporary singer-songwriter tunes in future gatherings.

Song circles are meant to be informal, lower key than an open-mic and more structured than a free-for-all jam session.  It is envisioned as a combination jam session and sing-along with space for learning from each other and trying new things.   A range of playing abilities and experience can be expected, and do feel free to join us as a non-playing singer or even just to listen.

So, bring your acoustic instrument, bring a song to share that fits the Celtic music style and everyone can sing.  Join in or sit back and enjoy some music making.  We’ll be raising our voices in Solomons from 7:00 to 8:30, March 26.  No registration is necessary.   For more information, call Joe Ruff at Calvert Library Southern Branch at 410-326-5289 or email at jruff@somd.lib.md.us.
