CHECK OUT YOUR COMMUNITY

at Calvert Library

Once upon a time, “there’s nothing to do” was a regular complaint from families in Calvert County.  This is no longer the case.  There are so many options for amazing learning, exploring, and lively entertainment that it’s hard to know where to start your weekend or summer vacation.  Calvert Library wants to help you discover these wonderful opportunities through their new initiative Check Out Your Community.  Thanks to the generous partnerships of area businesses and organizations, beginning June 2, you can check out free passes to various pools, parks, museums and other facilities.  Cove Point Park Pool, Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center, Calvert Marine Museum, Chesapeake Beach Waterpark, and Paddle or Pedal are just a few of the organizations participating in this exciting new program.

Check out the program online at calvert.lib.md.us to find additional organizations who are contributing free passes or discounts through Check Out Your Community. Passes and discounts will be available for printing using an online reservation system created by Plymouth Rocket.  There will be some limitation to the number of passes you can check out over a certain period of time so that as many people as possible can benefit from the opportunity.

Calvert Library is committed to community-building and expects Check Out Your Community to connect Calvert citizens to enjoyable and intriguing experiences in our local area.  Library Director Carrie Plymire said, “so often we forget to explore and take advantage of things in our own backyards!  I hope this program helps families get out and play together this summer while saving money, helps grandparents with ideas of where to take the grandkids, and helps our local businesses and organizations market their terrific offerings more widely.”

Visit any Calvert Library location or online at calvert.lib.md.us for details.  Calvert Library is looking to add to its "Check Out Your Community" initiative; business owners and community partners interested in participating are encouraged to contact Colleen Cano, Calvert Library Southern Branch Manager, at ccano@somd.lib.md.us.

Tween Summer Book Fest at Calvert Library

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Beverly Izzi

                   410-535-0291

What do gorillas, ghosts, and snowballs have in common?  They’re all being featured this summer at Calvert Library’s Tween Summer Book Fest!

Tween Summer Book Fest is a popular annual series of hang-outs for 5th through 7th graders.  Our local tweens are invited to head to their local library throughout the summer to join the celebration as we read, eat, play, craft, and chat.  Even better: the first 10 to sign up for Book Fest each month will receive a free copy of the book to keep!

June’s featured book is Liesl and Po, a ghostly tale written by Lauren Oliver.  Liesl lives locked away in a tiny attic bedroom, imprisoned by her stepmother.  One night, a ghost named Po appears from the shadows along with ghost pet Bundle.  That same evening, an alchemist’s apprentice accidentally switches a box containing the Most Powerful Magic in the World with an almost identical box holding the ashes of Liesl’s father.  Soon all of these elements are drawn together on an extraordinary adventure filled with chases, magic, excitement, and wild humor.

July’s book takes a walk on the wild side with Newbery Award winning The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate.  Ivan is an easygoing gorilla.  He lives at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade with his friends Stella the elephant and Bob the dog.  He is accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain, to watching TV, and to making his own painted pictures.  He hardly ever thinks about his old life in the jungle.  When Ruby, a terrified baby elephant taken from her family in the wild, joins their family, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.

August gears up for a new school year with Because of Mr. Terupt, by Rob Buyea.  5th graders at Snow Hill School start their school year with a new teacher, Mr. Terupt.  Mr. Terupt is a great teacher.  He understands them, is on their side, makes learning fun with his unique approach, and draws out their strengths no matter how much some of them try to resist him.  It may be their best year ever—until a simple prank has tragic results.  Soon the students are learning lessons of a new kind, lessons they never expected.

Tween Summer Book Fest will take place at the following locations and dates:

Calvert Library Prince Frederick: Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00 pm on June 17th, July 15th, and August 5th

Calvert Library Fairview Branch:  Mondays from 6:30-8:00 pm on June 16th, July 14th, and August 4th

(press release) Calvert Library Hosts Huge Author Festival on May 31

May 5, 2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:   Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Calvert Library Prince Frederick will be hosting close to 40 authors at their Author Festival on Saturday, May 31.  This is a great chance to check out a new genre, get some autographs, support your favorite authors and even learn a bit about the writing and publishing process.  Autographed books make great gifts for fellow book lovers!  And if you are an aspiring writer, this is the perfect opportunity to network and make those all-important connections.

Both writers and readers will enjoy the various presentations throughout the day.  Keynote speaker, Rick Campbell, author of  The Trident Deception will present, “A Dark Story with a Happy Ending.”  Campbell’s book has been hailed as the best submarine thriller since The Hunt for Red October.  Campbell started life as a military brat and his family eventually settled in Florida. After high school he attended the US Naval Academy and spent over thirty years in the Navy including serving on four nuclear submarines, working at the Pentagon and as part of the Undersea Weapons Program Office.  His book reflects his knowledge of submarine warfare and also hooks the reader in a story with espionage, moral dilemmas, and considerations of what might happen when a father is ordered to hunt down his only son.

For the early birds, there will even be a special musical storytime at 9:30am for preschoolers and early elementary children hosted by Dr. Joyce Gerber, author of Teaching with Heart.  She will model how to make the most out of nursery rhymes using multisensory action-oriented learning experiences.  Later there will be child-friendly readings by the eight other children’s authors in attendance.  Some will even have crafts and special takeaways for those that visit their table.

Other presentations will include panels on writing series, publishing as ebooks and self or small imprint publishing.   There will be short readings by many of the authors from 12:30 to 2pm so potential readers can get a sneak preview.

For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

500 by five Celebration at Calvert Library

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Beverly Izzi

410-535-0291

On Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 10 am, all Calvert Library locations will be holding special “500 by Five” Celebrations. Join us for one of these special storytime celebrations featuring stories, songs, and cake as we honor our “500 by Five” participants and completers. Calvert Library’s “500 by Five” initiative inspires Calvert’s children to read 500 books by the age of five. Michelle Gutierrez of Prince Frederick’s two sons, Liam age six and Gavin age two and a half have completed their “500 by Five” goal. “500 by Five has helped prepare both my kids for school and beyond. It helped build a strong foundation for a love of learning.” Now in Kindergarten, Liam was “motivated by 500 by Five to want to read.” Families can sign up for “500 by Five” at any Calvert Library location or online at calvert.lib.md.us. For more information call Beverly Izzi at (410) 535-0291 or (301) 855-1862.

Tween Outdoor Art @ Calvert Library

Jackson Pollock was known to stand high on a ladder, dribbling and flinging paint down at a canvas stretched out on the ground in his barn.  We won’t be standing on ladders, but Tweens should come out to the Market Square lawn (between Calvert Library Prince Frederick and Panera Bread) on Tuesday, May 13, 6:30-8:00 pm for a fantastic exploration of the splatter paint style in a locale that won’t get paint on the books!  We will experiment with color, tools, and various methods. Each Tween will be given a piece of the painting(s) created this evening after the canvas finishes drying. Registration is required.  Visit  www.calvert.lib.md.us or call 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.
