What do gorillas, ghosts, and snowballs have in common?  They’re all being featured this summer at Calvert Library’s Tween Summer Book Fest!

Tween Summer Book Fest is a popular annual series of hang-outs for 5th through 7th graders.  Our local tweens are invited to head to their local library throughout the summer to join the celebration as we read, eat, play, craft, and chat.  Even better: the first 10 to sign up for Book Fest each month will receive a free copy of the book to keep!

June’s featured book is Liesl and Po, a ghostly tale written by Lauren Oliver.  Liesl lives locked away in a tiny attic bedroom, imprisoned by her stepmother.  One night, a ghost named Po appears from the shadows along with ghost pet Bundle.  That same evening, an alchemist’s apprentice accidentally switches a box containing the Most Powerful Magic in the World with an almost identical box holding the ashes of Liesl’s father.  Soon all of these elements are drawn together on an extraordinary adventure filled with chases, magic, excitement, and wild humor.

July’s book takes a walk on the wild side with Newbery Award winning The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate.  Ivan is an easygoing gorilla.  He lives at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade with his friends Stella the elephant and Bob the dog.  He is accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain, to watching TV, and to making his own painted pictures.  He hardly ever thinks about his old life in the jungle.  When Ruby, a terrified baby elephant taken from her family in the wild, joins their family, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.

August gears up for a new school year with Because of Mr. Terupt, by Rob Buyea.  5th graders at Snow Hill School start their school year with a new teacher, Mr. Terupt.  Mr. Terupt is a great teacher.  He understands them, is on their side, makes learning fun with his unique approach, and draws out their strengths no matter how much some of them try to resist him.  It may be their best year ever—until a simple prank has tragic results.  Soon the students are learning lessons of a new kind, lessons they never expected.
