Many people have discovered the “inspirational fix” TED Talks offer. TED Talks are short thought-provoking presentations and there are thousands of them available to watch online. TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading” and for their annual conference, TED invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes each. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall and Sir Richard Branson. For 25 years, TED has been supporting world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives.
To attend one of these TED Conferences in person, there is a rigorous application and a hefty price tag…$8500 this year. Or you can attend one day via live stream at Calvert Library Prince Frederick for free. TEDxCalvertLibraryLive, an independently organized event, will live stream a full day of the TED 2016 Conference on Wednesday, February 17. The event takes place in Vancouver so the sessions begin at 11:30am here and will run until the library closes.
This year’s theme is “Dream.” According to TED organizers, it's time to resurrect the spirit of John Kennedy’s great moonshot challenge of the 1960’s. This year's conference is dedicated to imagineering, invention, innovation … and the courageous dreamers who can bring us with them on their journey. Presenters on Wednesday include the founder of Girls Who Code, a humanitarian fighting extreme poverty and an "augmented reality" innovator. There are more details online. The videos from the conference will eventually be available online but if you are cutting edge and don’t want to wait, and if you want to hang out with other interesting cutting edge thinkers, come to the library on February 17.
