What was it like to be a U.S. service member during World War II? Korea?  Vietnam?  Afghanistan?  Or anywhere else in the world?  Do you know U.S. veterans who have stories to tell about their military experiences?

All are invited to Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 10am-3pm as we honor our local veterans and hear their personal stories.  Teens and others are encouraged to bring their favorite veterans to Meeting Room 3 to share their personal experiences, pictures, and documents and prepare their stories to submit to the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project.  At the same time a showcase of pre-recorded interviews of local veterans produced by Jake Ottenwaelder for an Eagle Scout project will continuously play in Meeting Rooms 1 & 2.  Refreshments will be provided.

Calvert Library Director Patricia Hofmann said of the event, “We really wanted to offer more opportunities for cross-generational interaction in our events this year so when Leslie [Bonner] suggested this partnership with an Eagle Scout project, I thought it was perfect.”  Librarian and former Scout Leader Leslie Bonner has done several projects through the library to support Scouting including a recent event at which Boy Scouts could complete the entire American Heritage Merit Badge.  Bonner said, “I had lots of help from the community in making that intense event work but we had 77 boys complete a merit badge with a little homework and a couple hours at the library.”  Public Relations Coordinator Robyn Truslow described the event as “Speed-networking for Boy Scouts.  Leslie had coordinated veterans to interview, Kirsti Uunila to talk about the National Register of Historic Places, Guffrie Smith to portray Frederick Douglass, Fred Dellinger as Abraham Lincoln, Van Ireland to talk about family history, Leila Boyer to talk about heritage career opportunities, docents to give tours of the Lincoln exhibit and more.  A truly amazing event made successful because of dedicated library partners and advocates.”

That and previous Scout partnerships led to the “Hear Our Veterans’ Voices” event showcasing Eagle Scout Ottenwaelder’s project and making the Library of Congress Veteran’s History Project accessible to other young people and veterans.  Keep an eye out for other intergenerational events hosted by Calvert Library!
