Do you want to save money on ebooks?  Or are you looking for a way to pass time on your commute?  The many advantages of ebooks include the ability to change the print size, the flexibility of downloading from home, and that they are automatically returned – which means there are never any overdue charges!  If you are interested in downloading electronic audio books or electronic print books then our Life Long Learning class, Downloading Books using Overdrive is for you!

Calvert Library is part of a statewide consortium that buys ebooks for Maryland library customers to check out on the ereading device of your preference.    As of today, there are thousands of titles available with multiple copies of each.  If you wonder why there needs to be multiple copies of a digital book, maybe you would be interested in attending the ebook workshop.

The ereader event, Downloading Books using Overdrive, is at Calvert Library, Twin Beaches Branch on Tuesday, December 11 at 7pm.  Your friendly librarians will explain how digital rights management works for library ebooks and also tell you how to download those books to your device.  If you would like to attend, please register through the website or by calling 410-535-091 or 301-855-1862.

Getting set up to take advantage of library ebooks does take a little patience the first time but after the initial software is downloaded and your account created, it is even easier than a trip to the library to “pick up” a few books.  Attendees will be walked through the entire process of downloading the software, creating an Adobe Digital Editions account and then checking out an ebook and loading it on an ereader or smartphone.  If you have one, feel free to bring your e-reader, laptop, tablet or smartphone and your library card for hands-on practice.

Basic Photography Workshop at Calvert Library

Whether your camera is old or new, simple or advanced, the way it captures a photograph remains the same. The simplest point-and-shoot models and fancy DSLR cameras all follow the same basic rules. Understanding those basics and combining them with simple, easy to remember tips and techniques is the first step toward capturing more emotional, powerful, and creative photos.

Calvert Library and Calvert Photography Club invite you to a free Photography Basics class taught by local photographer Jeff Smallwood, Nov. 26, 2012 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.

Topics covered in this class include:

• An introduction to the basic features of a camera

• How to use your camera options to achieve different results

• Top tips and techniques for taking creative and powerful shots

• Basic rules of composition and lighting

• Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Bringing your camera to class is not required, but may be helpful for those that want to review their camera features during the class.

Jeff Smallwood is a local photographer and nature enthusiast. He is experienced in a wide range of styles and techniques, including black & white, portraits, landscapes, and seascapes. His favorite subjects include the natural and varied beauty of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Smallwood has a strong background in the digital and scientific sides of photography as well as the traditional photographic arts. He is currently serving as Vice President of the Calvert Photography Club and has lived in Calvert County for almost 18 years. He can be found online at www.jeffsmallwood.com

The Calvert Photography Club was formed to bring together folks that are interested in photography with the desire to become better photographers. The club promotes the interests of photographers with the goal of helping members produce better photographs, as well as to educate, encourage, and expand the photographic knowledge and capabilities of our members. Club members meet monthly and sponsor photo trips and monthly photo assignments throughout the year. Learn more about the club by visiting them online at www.calvertphotographyclub.com

Intergenerational Veteran's History Event (press release)

October 10, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

What was it like to be a U.S. service member during World War II? Korea?  Vietnam?  Afghanistan?  Or anywhere else in the world?  Do you know U.S. veterans who have stories to tell about their military experiences?

All are invited to Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 10am-3pm as we honor our local veterans and hear their personal stories.  Teens and others are encouraged to bring their favorite veterans to Meeting Room 3 to share their personal experiences, pictures, and documents and prepare their stories to submit to the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project.  At the same time a showcase of pre-recorded interviews of local veterans produced by Jake Ottenwaelder for an Eagle Scout project will continuously play in Meeting Rooms 1 & 2.  Refreshments will be provided.

Calvert Library Director Patricia Hofmann said of the event, “We really wanted to offer more opportunities for cross-generational interaction in our events this year so when Leslie [Bonner] suggested this partnership with an Eagle Scout project, I thought it was perfect.”  Librarian and former Scout Leader Leslie Bonner has done several projects through the library to support Scouting including a recent event at which Boy Scouts could complete the entire American Heritage Merit Badge.  Bonner said, “I had lots of help from the community in making that intense event work but we had 77 boys complete a merit badge with a little homework and a couple hours at the library.”  Public Relations Coordinator Robyn Truslow described the event as “Speed-networking for Boy Scouts.  Leslie had coordinated veterans to interview, Kirsti Uunila to talk about the National Register of Historic Places, Guffrie Smith to portray Frederick Douglass, Fred Dellinger as Abraham Lincoln, Van Ireland to talk about family history, Leila Boyer to talk about heritage career opportunities, docents to give tours of the Lincoln exhibit and more.  A truly amazing event made successful because of dedicated library partners and advocates.”

That and previous Scout partnerships led to the “Hear Our Veterans’ Voices” event showcasing Eagle Scout Ottenwaelder’s project and making the Library of Congress Veteran’s History Project accessible to other young people and veterans.  Keep an eye out for other intergenerational events hosted by Calvert Library!

For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 or check the website at calvert.lib.md.us.  To find out more about The Library of Congress Veterans History Project visit their website at http://www.loc.gov/vets/kit.html.

October 10, 2012

Have you read The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway yet?   You know that the whole state is reading it as the One Maryland One Book title this year, right?  Well, if you just don’t have time to read it or you aren’t a reader, you can still be part of the conversation.  On Tuesday, October 16, Huntingtown High School’s Eye of the Storm Productions will be performing a full-length Readers’ Theater at 7pm.  The free show is two hours and covers the book in enough detail that you will feel like you have read it.  The performance uses a script adapted from the book by Keith Shaffer and is staged by Derek Anderson with 30 students involved in this intensely dramatic production.
