SALLY FALLON MORELL TO SPEAK IN CALVERT COUNTY

Do you care about the food your family eats?  Meet bestselling author of Nourishing Traditions and Eat Fat Lose Fat, Sally Fallon Morell at the Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Monday, September 19 at 7pm.  Calvert County Chapter of Weston Price Foundation joins up with Calvert Eats Local to host this nationally-known speaker.  Fallon will present a shortened version of her seminar on "Traditional Diets" covering the work of Dr. Weston A. Price and introducing the principles of healthy traditional diets and practical steps to change your diet for the better.  Fallon is the co-founder and President of the Weston A. Price Foundation, nutrition researcher, chef, journalist, homemaker and author.  Her cookbook, Nourishing Traditions “challenges politically correct nutrition and the diet dictocrats.”  Nourishing Traditions will be available for sale and signing.

Calvert Eats Local meets the third Monday of each month at Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 7pm.  Their mission is to encourage local agriculture, eat locally and share resources, energy and good green ideas.  Every quarter this group also hosts an amazing potluck where members bring dishes prepared with local ingredients.  They also bring their own plates, glasses, silverware and even cloth napkins to be as green as possible.

The Calvert County Chapter of Weston Price Foundation meets bi-monthly at Calvert Library Fairview Branch, usually on the third Tuesday of the month at 7pm.  Their mission is to help people find and prepare nutrient-dense food, returning to traditional diets.

For more information about the Sally Fallon event, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

AAUW and Calvert Library Host Downloadable e-Book Training

Calvert Library is getting a lot of buzz these days!  They have the hot products and are the cool place to be. About ten years ago when the Internet really started heating up, people predicted that libraries would be gone in ten years.  Libraries in general and Calvert Library specifically have proven that they have staying power.  With over 2000 people a day in and out of the actual building, Calvert Library has demonstrated itself as a necessary and well-loved institution.   The most recent excitement is around e-readers as the library circulates Kindles and NOOKcolors for customers who want to experiment with this new reading medium.  With 72 devices circulating, you would think you wouldn’t have to wait too long to get one and that is true for a few titles that only have seven to ten people waiting for their turn.  However, the Bestseller NOOKcolor has almost sixty people waiting…with six copies of this title, it could take a few months before that one makes the rounds.

In the meantime, some people are learning to take advantage of the nearly 5000 e-books the Calvert Library offers through the Maryland Digital eLibrary Consortium, also known as Overdrive.  These e-books can be downloaded to your own e-reader as well as your smartphone, laptop or even desktop computer…though it is a little uncomfortable to take your desktop computer to bed with you.
Getting set up to take advantage of these e-books does take a little patience the first time but after the initial software is downloaded and your account created, it is even easier than a trip to the library to “pick up” a few books.  For those that are interested in having a little help getting started using these e-books, Calvert Library and the American Association of University Women (AAUW) are co-sponsoring training on Tuesday, September 20, at 7pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  Beginners will be introduced to several popular e-reading devices to help decide which one might be best for which situation.  Then attendees will walk through the entire process of downloading the software, creating an Adobe Digital Editions account and then checking out an e-book and loading it on an e-reader or smartphone.  Please register through the Calvert Library website or by calling.  If you have one, feel free to bring your e-reader, laptop and/or smartphone for hands-on practice.  AAUW will provide light refreshments.  For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Cupcake Showdown at the Calvert Library

October 13, 2010

Forget about DC Cupcakes on TLC or Food Network’s Cupcake Wars.  THE place to be on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 was the Calvert Library in Prince Frederick where 37 tweens (grades 5-7) from Southern Maryland gathered to compete in a cupcake decorating contest sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

The smell of freshly baked cupcakes filled the air of the Calvert Library as librarians baked over 200 cupcakes for the event.  Janice Kuhn, “The Fat Fairy” from Fairyland Bakery, provided many of the toppings for the cupcakes.

Tweens competed against each other in groups ranging from solo decorators to teams of 3.  Each group was tasked to plan and create cupcakes that met different criteria, including most creative and best use of cupcake toppings, which included frosting, candies, pretzel sticks, cereal, and sprinkles.  One of the most memorable cupcakes looked just like a hamburger, complete with a “seeded” roll.

Calvert Library staff served as judges for the contest.  To the contestants, winning wasn’t the primary motivation.  They wanted the chance to show their creativity and then enjoy eating their creations.  “We like sweets” one of the tweens commented as she smiled and rubbed her tummy.

Beverly Izzi, Children’s Coordinator, was pleased with the large turnout and said the library plans to offer a Tween Cupcake Showdown in the fall of 2011.

Thinning the Veil Open Mic

October 12, 2010

In this time just before Halloween, the veil between this world and the next…thins.  Calvert Library Prince Frederick is hosting a “Thinning the Veil” Open Mic on Thursday, October 28 at 7:00pm.  Do you have a good ghost story?  Maybe some Edgar Allen Poe-etry? Or maybe some creepy music? All things terrifying are welcome.  Costumes are encouraged.  Sign up for a 5-minute spot at the mic at the Calvert Library website, calvert.lib.md.us.  No one will be turned away but the faint of heart should beware.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.
