The Buzz about Bees
Almonds, blueberries, apples, broccoli, avocadoes, strawberries, and coffee are just a few crops that rely heavily on pollination by honey bees to survive. In fact, honey bees pollinate about one-sixth of the world's flowering plant species and some 400 of its agricultural plants. These small but mighty creatures play an import role in the world’s food chain. That’s why a steady decline in honey bee populations over the last decade has scientists worried. Learn more about these amazing insects at The Buzz about Bees family program at Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch on Saturday, July 8, from 2-3:30pm. Our presenter, Veronica Cristo from Chesapeake’s Bounty in North Beach, will lead a family discussion on the importance of honey bees. She will offer bee-friendly gardening ideas to help increase local bee populations and lead participants in a beeswax project. A variety of honey will be available to taste. It’s sure to ‘bee’ a fun program! For more information, call Joan Kilmon at 410-257-2411 or visit the library online at calvertlibrary.info.
