Calvert Conversations is an informal local history group that meets at Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch on the second Thursday of the month, 10-11 am.  On March 9, the topic of discussion will be The Belvedere Hotel, which was built in the early 1900’s in Chesapeake Beach.  When it burned to the ground in 1923, did all its memories go with it?  We hope not!  Kris De Grace of the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum has been researching old newspaper files, piecing together some untold stories of The Belvedere.  Please join us at Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch on March 9, to learn more about our local history and a posh hotel from yesteryear.  For more information, call Joan Kilmon at 410-257-2411.

Local resident Jon Frank will share his Father's story and artifacts from the Battle of Bataan and 3 years as a Japanese Prisoner of War at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on March 14, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.  The collection is scheduled for donation to the National WW II Museum on April 5, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle's final days and surrender on April 9, 1942. This was the largest surrender of U.S. Armed Forces in history.

Col. Charles B. Frank served on active duty from 1941 until his retirement at Fort Meade in 1967.

"When my Mother passed away in 2015, I assembled the family documents related to both my father and mother's war time service.  The materials have been in our family all our lives.   While cataloguing and digitizing the letters, orders, telegrams and other items saved by my father and grandmother, I was also researching the events and history of the defense on Bataan and the role played by the US Army Veterinary Corps at that time," explained Jon Frank.

"1LT Frank was the veterinarian to Battery A of the 23rd Field Artillery (PS), a pack unit with 48 horses and 80 mules in the field following the attack on Pearl Harbor.   As the battle progressed, the unit was destroyed and he fulfilled other duties including replacement corral operation and food inspection."

Col. Frank was a POW from April 9, 1942 until liberation on September 7, 1945.  He survived several "near misses" including a 49-day transfer from Manila to Japan involving three ships, multiple attacks and mishaps resulting in the death of 83% of the 1619 men making the journey on the Oryoku Maru

Col. Frank was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his war time service. Join us to hear these stories and see some of the collected artifacts.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Looks like there is Treble at the Library!  And it’s treble you don’t want to miss!  Four of our nation’s premier military bands will be performing at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Wednesday nights.  The first concert will feature Navy Band Country Current on February 15.  If your significant other thinks you didn’t do enough for Valentine’s Day, bring them to this show and you will be back in good graces.  The show starts at 7pm.  These are free events and are often standing room only, so get there early to claim seats!  On February 22, members of the US Naval Academy’s Superintendent’s Jazz Combo will entertain and energize you no matter how cold it is outside.  March 15, the library will host Max Impact, the US Air Force Premier Rock Band who will play popular, rock, Americana, country and more.  The series will wrap up on March 22, with the talented US Army Band Downrange bringing an up-to-date repertoire of rock, pop, country, R&B and inspirational patriotic arrangements.  If you have quiet work that you were planning to do at the library on those Wednesday nights, you might want to make alternate arrangements or come for the concert and say the dog ate your homework!  Be sure to tell your friends you’re going or when you post later on Facebook, you’ll be in trouble for not giving them the heads up!  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Calvert Library hosts special Black History Month event (press release)

From 1830 to 1865, it was illegal in Maryland for Negroes to assemble unless a "respectable" White person was present. On Tuesday, February 28, at 7pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick, participants at “Faith and African American Families in Calvert County” will explore the history of this law and how enslaved people and the churches responded.

Three years ago, Calvert Library hosted a Founding African American Families event where we heard from Footes, Mackalls, Clarks, Harrods, Johnsons and many more families with a stake in County history.  We also heard about the research that All Saints Church had begun concerning the role of African Americans in the church’s history.  As that parish prepares to celebrate its 325th anniversary, the community is once again invited to the library to share stories of “Faith and African American Families.”  Of particular interest will be family histories as they connect to church histories from 1774 to the present. This is a great opportunity to re-energize your genealogical research, share interesting tidbits you have unearthed and learn about our community’s rich history in which the church has played a significant role.

The Reverend Ken Phelps will present a brief background of the All Saints project and share some of the stories uncovered.  Michael Kent will relate stories of the Kent and King families.  What can you add to the collective compendium of local history?  If you have photos or documents, please bring them.  Volunteers from the Calvert County Historical Society will be on hand to help with scanning and to share their resources.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.
