In September and October, the whole state of Maryland is being asked to read All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. In this unforgettable book, two teens—one black, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension. Written in tandem by two award-winning authors, this tour de force shares the alternating perspectives of Rashad and Quinn as the complications from that single violent moment, the type taken from the headlines, unfold and reverberate to highlight an unwelcome truth.

There are copies of the books floating around in various locations all over Calvert County.  There are copies of the print book and the audio book at the library.  You can download the ebook for free from the library in both Overdrive and One Click and the audiobook is downloadable also. Ask your librarian for help with any of these!

In Calvert County, there are many opportunities to talk about this book. See the schedule below. In Charles County, you can meet the authors on Wednesday, September 28 at 11am at St. Charles High School in Waldorf.  Join us whether you’ve read the book or not. On Saturday, October 15, at 7pm, Huntingtown High School’s Eye of the Storm Productions will put on a Reader’s Theater performance of the book.  This group of talented actors led by master director and producer Derek Anderson, will bring the story to life.  It isn’t often that you get to see this amazing troupe perform for free so take advantage of this Maryland Humanities sponsored event!  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.
