Who doesn’t love mini-golf? Friends of Calvert Library are bringing a mini-golf course to the library in Prince Frederick!  They are looking for help to do so.  Whether you have ideas for creating obstacles on the course, want to sponsor a hole, play a round or donate a silent auction item, there are opportunities for you to get involved.  After the library officially closes on Friday, September 23, teens will have a chance to help set up the golf course and be the first ones to play.  Then on Saturday, the course will be open at the price of $5/person (ages 6 and under free) from 11am to 4pm.  That evening, there will be an adult event complete with a silent auction, seated massage, photo booth and a 19th hole (that’s a bar if you aren’t a regular golfer).  Those tickets are $40/person.  Individuals or businesses who sponsor a hole can decorate the hole with items that will show off their business…perhaps a car repair shop will have a loop made from an old tire, an exhaust pipe to serve as a tunnel and maybe a bottle of motor oil to navigate around.

Calvert Library’s mission is to empower individuals by facilitating lifelong learning and to strengthen our community by providing opportunities for connection to one another and the world.  Friends of Calvert Library do much to advance this mission through purchasing supplies for library events and classes, paying for staff training, purchasing goodies like Kindle Fires to serve as inspiration to complete Summer Reading challenges, paying for the new summer reading software, financing volunteer appreciation events and more. They are able to do this because of strong support from local businesses and generous individuals.  This library mini-golf fundraiser will be a great way for those folks that support the library to be showcased in a lighthearted and compelling way.

For more information, call Robyn Truslow or Megan Jones at 410-535-0291.

Thursday, July 21, Marvin Anani (human) and Dr. Angelica Spotson (a Russell Terrier mix known as “Angel” who is an expert bed bug sniffer) gave Calvert Library the all-clear after a thorough search.  According to Superior Bed Bug Solutions company website, Angel was “trained using scent vials that developed her abilities to pinpoint live bed bugs and viable bed bug eggs.  She trained alongside police, arson and bomb squad dogs to distinguish between odors and track the scent of bedbugs to their source.  Anani and Dr. Spotson are annually certified by the Integrated Bed Bug Management Association as a bed bug detection team.”  Angel has been doing detection for about two years.  According to SBBS, dogs are about 95% accurate in assessing a building for bed bugs.

Wednesday, July 20, four bed bugs were found on a book in the book drop at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  The book drop was closed and all items in the book drop were immediately quarantined.  This quick action on the part of library staff prevented any spread of the pest.  According to Calvert Library Board of Trustees President Martha Grahame, “We have a vigilant, well-trained staff of very smart people who know how to react quickly to almost any situation. We are proud of the work they do and pleased to have ended this event on a happy note.”  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Calvert Library Pro-active Response (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 20, 2016

Calvert Library Prince Frederick branch manager, Marcia Hammett, was collecting the returned items from the book drop at approximately 3pm on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, and noticed a few small bugs scurrying for cover. Because she was concerned that it might be a bed bug, she immediately implemented the library’s response plan. Hammett quarantined the book drop and contacted the county’s pest control staff who immediately came to the library.  He confirmed that the bug was likely a bed bug.  Following best practice, all forty-five items in the room were sealed in zip-top bags and then those bags were double bagged in garbage bags. The exterminator will treat the room in the morning.  A canine bed bug detection service will inspect the entire Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 12:30pm on Thursday, July 21.  Canines have a 90-97% accuracy rate in detecting bed bugs.

Library procedure would have been to contact the customer but the library books that hosted the bug had not been checked out, so the library was not able to alert them to the potential problem in their home.  On rare occasion, books leave the building without having been checked out.

Bed bugs are uncommon in libraries. They feed at night on blood and since there is nothing to feed on at night in libraries, it’s not their favorite environment. They are more likely to be found in hotels, public transit, hospitals, nursing homes and theaters. Bed bugs do not carry disease and their presence is not an indication of a dirty home.  They do bite and are definitely a pest that the library does not welcome.  If you ever suspect your home or a library book might have bed bug eggs, nymphs or adults, please bring the book back in a sealed bag and alert library staff.

For more information about how to deal with a bed bug infestation or better yet, avoid one, take a look at this information page Kalamazoo Library put together http://www.kpl.gov/guides/bed-bugs/.
