FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The most recent tragic events in Ferguson, Missouri, Baltimore and other similar situations across the country have rekindled a national conversation about the interaction between the police and the communities they serve. This topic has evoked highly charged verbal and physical confrontations between police and citizens. It has also sparked much discussion and debate within families, among community members and across our nation.

On Thursday May 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., numerous community organizations will gather to talk about the relationship between law enforcement and the citizens in Calvert County.  We invite all community members to be part of the conversation!

Join us at the College of Southern Maryland, Prince Frederick Campus, Building B Multi-purpose Room to discuss what can be done to promote a healthy community and strengthen the partnerships necessary to prevent a crisis in police and citizen interaction. Participating organizations include Calvert County Fraternal Order of Police, Calvert County NAACP, Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, Calvert County State’s Attorney’s Office, Calvert Interfaith Council, Calvert Library, College of Southern Maryland Institutional Equity and Diversity Office, Concerned Black Men, Concerned Black Women, Community Mediation Center of Calvert, Maryland Commission on Civil Rights, Maryland State Police and TRUST.

Law enforcement representatives and others will answer questions and participate in the conversation. Come share your experiences and thoughts to be part of the solution! For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Some of us love to read. Some of us love pizza. Some of us love both! And some of us who love both are teens! How about you? Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch is sponsoring “Pizza With a Side of Books.” If you are a teen who enjoys reading, come join us at Ledo’s Pizza in Chesapeake Beach, at 8406 Bayside Rd., on Tuesday, June 23rd, from 6 to 8 PM.  We’ll talk about what we’ve been reading and what we have especially liked, make recommendations of our favorite titles and series…and eat pizza! No need to prepare with any special reading, and free of charge! And maybe add plans to get together again! Be sure to register, though. We’ll need a head count! International Bestselling Author Nadia Hashimi at Calvert Library Prince Frederick (press release)

International Best-Selling Author Nadia Hashimi
Discusses Her Book The Pearl That Broke Its Shell

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

International bestselling author, Goodreads Best Fiction and Best Debut Author finalist Nadia Hashimi will be visiting Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Tuesday, May 19, at 7pm to discuss her book The Pearl That Broke Its Shell.  Over the past fourteen years, the world has learned a lot about Afghanistan, including the struggle women face in that country.  Hashimi tells a compelling story about a lesser known practice called bacha posh.  An Afghan family without sons will disguise a young daughter as a boy until puberty in order for that child to have the freedom to run errands, escort sisters and so on.  Her main characters are generations apart but have remarkably similar stories.  Their stories are interwoven with the history of Afghanistan in the early 20th century and a more contemporary Afghanistan shortly after the fall of the Taliban regime.  Hashimi says that she “wrote this story to share the experience of Afghan women in a fictional work that is made up of a thousand truths.”  Khaled Hosseini, New York Times bestselling author of The Kite Runner said of the book, “Her always engaging multigenerational tale is a portrait of Afghanistan in all of its perplexing, enigmatic glory, and a mirror into the still ongoing struggles of Afghan women.”

Dr. Hashimi was born and raised in New York and New Jersey.  She works as a pediatrician and resides in Maryland with her husband, three children, and their African Grey parrot. Join us to learn more from Nadia Hashimi and to talk about the book. Copies of The Pearl That Broke Its Shell will be available for purchase and signing, $20 cash only.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.
