When Barbara Kingsolver wrote Animal, Vegetable, Miracle (published in 2007), she helped to build the buy-local food movement across the country. A respected and popular fiction writer, Kingsolver moved with her family to rural Virginia and she and her family spent a year trying to only eat locally-sourced food. She documented those experiences in Animal, Vegetable, Miracle which became a national best seller. Greg Bowen will lead a discussion on the book on Monday, December 17 at 6:30 p.m. at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.
In December of 2007, Bowen led a discussion of this book a few weeks before the library hosted the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, “Key Ingredients: America by Food,” both to build excitement about the coming exhibit and to see what sort of interest there was in Calvert for the locavore movement. A huge turnout for the book discussion led to the formation of Calvert Eats Local, a grassroots organization that meets monthly at Calvert Library. The group shows films, brings in speakers (including immensely popular Joe Salatin), and once a quarter, the members enjoy an amazing potluck. In addition to the obvious advantage of enjoying fresher, healthier and more delicious food, eating locally supports our local farmers and builds the local economy.
To revisit their roots and to see who else is out there who hasn’t joined the fold yet, the group decided to consider this Kingsolver book again. According to Bowen, “The book is incredible. We can definitely get more out of talking about it now that we have done so much more ourselves towards eating mostly locally-sourced food. Plus, Kingsolver is a master. Her ideas are inspiring and her language is stunning.” All are welcome at the discussion, even if you haven’t read the book. Be inspired and learned something about this huge movement.
