More and more people are growing their own food and managing their own landscape.   Some are doing it for the exercise, some for the freshness factor, some to save money, some for the knowledge of what chemicals they can avoid, some to reduce their carbon footprint and others are doing it just because it is fun!  Whatever your reason, Calvert Library and the Master Gardeners of Calvert County want to help.  The Garden Smarter Series presented in partnership with Calvert Library won first place in the Workshop and Presentation category for the 2011 International Master Gardener Search for Excellence.

In addition to the Garden Smarter Series, Calvert Library also hosts Calvert Eats Local each month.  This group invites you to join them at Calvert Library on Saturday, January 21 beginning at 10am to participate in a viewing party of the online conference “TEDx Manhattan: Changing the Way We Eat.”  We will have a potluck lunch and cooperative seed ordering so come with your food, your seed catalogs and your garden ideas.  The event is free but you need to register with Calvert Library. For more information about the conference, go online to http://tedxmanhattan.org/.

The new year’s Garden Smarter series will begin at 10am on Saturday, January 28, at Calvert Library Prince Frederick with “Starting from Seed.”  This free workshop will teach you how to get the full potential from a piece of ground and a handful of seeds.  The following Saturday be a workshop to teach the basic requirements for successful gardening like when to start planting, what tools you need, how to manage common weeds and pests and more.

While most of the workshops are on Saturday mornings, there are a couple evening events as well.  On Wednesday, February 8, at 7pm, Herb Reed of the Maryland Cooperative Extension will give you strategies for managing those pesky hungry insects and even deer who make gardening a challenge.

Other topics throughout the year will include Ponds and Water Features, Square Foot and Vertical Gardening, Water Conservation and Erosion Control, Composting, Homegrown Herbs, Beekeeping, Food Preservation and more!  This award-winning series has been offered for over six years with new and refreshed information each year.  New topics this year include “Cultivating Healthy Eating,” “Decorating with Natural Materials for the Holiday” and “Making Wreaths and Other Designs.”

The Garden Smarter Series is one of several educational activities conducted by the Calvert County Master Gardeners for our county.  They also sponsor the Bay Wise Yard Certification Program, information booths at Children's Day at J. Patterson Park, Patuxent River Appreciation Days (PRAD), Green Expo, Youth Day at the County Fair, developing community gardens, and much more.  CCMGs are residents trained and certified by the University of Maryland Extension to provide public education activities in our county.  Their local website is http://extension.umd.edu/gardening/mastergardeners/local/calvert.

Peter Abresch Reception (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Looking for a fun gift for a local reader?  Peter Abresch will be introducing his new book, Me 'n Snack McGhee at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Thursday, December 1 at 7pm.  The book takes place mostly in Calvert County including some businesses around Chapline Place, Solomons, the  Drum Point Lighthouse and even at Books and Bubbly at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  At the end of the evening Mr. Abresch will answer questions about writing and publishing.  Light refreshments will be served.

When asked for a bio, Abresch had this to say about himself.   “Born in the USA... a long, looooong time ago.  I sold my first writing, a novella, to Analog Magazine in 1968, sold a movie option on it, and thought my career was made, but it wasn't until thirty years later that my first novel was published.  My eighth novel, Me and Snack McGhee is due out this month.  Clogging up the rest of my life was a stint as a professional dancer; a career with the federal government traveling all over the world; building three sailboats; and, with my wife and five sons, hammering and nailing a 3600 square foot house together off Battle Creek, on Long Cove, the location, by the way, shows up in the latest novel as Chance Dugan finds a missing boat tucked into the shallows.  I am also the author of Easy Reading Writing and I'm the moderator of the County's local writers group, Writers by the Bay.”

Calvert Library Southern Branch Renovation Architect Selected (press release)

November 3, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

An architect has been selected for the renovation of the Calvert Library Southern Branch.

Patricia Hofmann, Calvert Library Director said of the awardee, “GBA (Gant Brunnett Architects), based in Baltimore, has extensive experience in the design of public libraries, including renovation projects.”  There were twelve other bids reviewed and evaluated by a panel.  GBA also designed the Agricultural Exhibit Building at Jefferson Patterson Park.

The current location is 3,250 square feet and faces several challenges.  It has a very small children’s area, is quite crowded and rather noisy because of so many customers in such a small area.  The new location will be 9,200 square feet and should provide for more community gathering space, an engaging, interactive children’s area, a larger teen area and a quiet area for reading, studying and test-taking.  Southern Branch currently averages about 400 customers a day and had a circulation of over 211,000 items last fiscal year.  One of the main customer concerns about the current location is that there are not enough computers.  There are fifteen computers with internet access for the public and last year there were almost 39,000 uses.  A new library will attract even more customers who will benefit from an enhanced learning environment.

Southern Branch in Solomons will be an interim location and will probably open sometime in 2013.  The design process is expected to take about 6 months and the renovation about 8 months.   As the branch moves out of the Southern Community Center, more space will be available for Office on Aging and Parks and Recreation services. The County plans to build a new library in Lusby when the economy improves.

When asked for a response to the opinion that libraries will be obsolete in 10 years due to books going away, Board of Library Trustee President Kip Hine had this to say, “Libraries are much more than a place to check out books that educate or entertain customers. They are a resource for parents of young children to prepare their children for school through storytimes, activities, music, computers, movies, and of course books.  They are a resource for people with limited access to the internet or computers.  They are a job center for those who need support in their job search.  They are a meeting space for small business owners who do not have an office in which to greet clients.  They are a learning space for tutors to meet with struggling students.  They are a quiet classroom for adult distance learning students to take their classes and even have exams proctored.  They are an intelligently-staffed lab for those who need to learn new computer skills.  They are a source of lifelong learning and opportunity for engagement for retirees seeking a new purpose, direction, connections and inspiration in life.  They are a place for neighborhood associations to meet to discuss community-building and community safety.  They are a safe place for teens to gather, be constructively occupied and have fun.

According to Hofmann, “After home and work, libraries are ‘the third place.’  This expansion will enable library staff to more adequately fulfill these roles. The renovation will be functional and user friendly, attractive and inspiring.  The library will be a community learning center with lots of books, places to meet and study, computers and wifi.  It will be a destination for citizens to gather and learn.”

Calvert Eats Local Dines Out (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

A grassroots group that has its genesis in a book discussion group at Calvert Library, Calvert Eats Local continues to grow each month with more and more people jumping on the local food bandwagon.  Or maybe the membership grows because each quarter’s potluck includes such an astounding array of delicious food.  The last event included eggrolls, pickled beets, homemade bread, quiche, scalloped turnips, sweet potato pie with whipped cream, marinated mixed bean salad, marinated beef strips, gumbo…all of which featured or consisted entirely of local raised ingredients.

The members have decided to start storming local restaurants as well.  On Monday, November 21, the group will convene at Dream Weaver Café in Prince Frederick.  Reservations are strongly advised and must be “made and paid” in advance at any Calvert Library location.  The price is $26 per person which includes everything except the wine which is BYOLB (bring your own local bottle).  The menu will be based on ingredients that Trish Weaver will source locally.  She expects to include rockfish in an herb butter sauce, homemade meatloaf, spinach quiche, mashed or sweet potatoes, winter squash, a greens or beet dish, rolls or muffins and an apple-based dessert.  Weaver said of the event, “We were excited to give this a try.  We’ve been sourcing a lot of our produce and meat locally anyway so it isn’t too much of a stretch.  It’s nice that this group of foodies will be flexible about the menu so that I can really take advantage of the most local ingredients.”

For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

So here they are (a little behind schedule) the press release, flyer, and slider for approval for December's Cinema Cafe.  The press release seems sort of lacking, but I couldn't think of what else I wanted to put in and I didn't want to be even later.

Oh, if you need the other files to make any changes just let me know.

The Garrett Music Academy has been a long-time supporter of Calvert Library through sponsorship of Calvert’s Next Idol, Teen Band Nights, gifts of gaming systems to draw teens into the library, and most recently, a donation of four brand new instruments to raffle off just in time for the holiday gift-giving season.

The donations include a trombone, a full-size violin (or a fiddle if you prefer), a flute and a trumpet. The instruments are donated through the Garrett Music Academy school band rental program but are in fact, brand new.  They each come with a protective carrying case as well. Raffle tickets are $1/each or six for $5 and you can mix or match what instrument you want to try for.  Tickets are available at all Calvert Library locations and the instruments are also traveling from branch to branch if you want to visit and see one in person.  The drawing will be held November 23.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

For one night only, the library won’t help you find the answers.  But that won’t stop us from asking plenty of tough questions!  The Friends of Calvert Library are sponsoring their second Pub Quiz Night as a fundraiser on Friday, November 18.  The Calvert Library Prince Frederick doors open at 6:30pm and the quiz begins promptly at 7pm.  The Quizmaster is JR Mathers and he is firmly in the camp of “Rule #1.  The Quizmaster is always right!”  You must have a picture ID verifying that you are 21 or older to enter.  Teams of up to six people can be added to the waiting list through the Calvert Library online calendar at calvert.lib.md.us. You must come to any Calvert Library location to pay in order for the team to be accepted as a competing team, so participation is based on a first-paid, first-served basis.  The fee is $50 per team or $75 at the door if there is still space available.  The winning team will receive $300.  There is only space for 16 teams and 20 spectators.  It should be a fun night and spectators 21 and older can also purchase their space ahead of time for $5.  There will be free snacks, a cash bar and donations are welcome.  There are lots of rules, some may even be made up on the spot(!), and the format is detailed on the Calvert Library website (calvert.lib.md.us).  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Events Leading Up to the War of 1812 presentation Calvert Library Fairview Branch (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 5, 2011

Lisa Tassa

410-257-2101

The Origins of the War of 1812

On Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 7pm, Jeff Korman, manager of the Maryland Department (Maryland State Library Resource Center, Enoch Pratt Library), will do a presentation on the origins of the War of 1812 at Calvert Library, Fairview Branch in Owings, Maryland.

This program reviews the events that forced the U.S. to sever ties with England and officially go to war.

As Maryland celebrates the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, it is important to know that the origins of this War date back to the early years of the 19th century, well before war was declared.  Most people know that impressment of sailors was a major issue with Britain but are not aware that complicated diplomatic maneuvering and a series of skirmishes on the high seas between the two countries had existed for years- not to mention the role played by Napoleon.  Join us as Korman helps us understand what the War was really about. Registration appreciated. Call or register online at calvert.lib.md.us.  For more information call Lisa Tassa at (410) 257-2101.
