On Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 10 am, all Calvert Library locations will be holding special “500 by Five” Celebrations. Join us for one of these special storytime celebrations featuring stories, songs, and cake as we honor our “500 by Five” participants and completers. Calvert Library’s “500 by Five” initiative inspires Calvert’s children to read 500 books by the age of five. Michelle Gutierrez of Prince Frederick’s two sons, Liam age six and Gavin age two and a half have completed their “500 by Five” goal. “500 by Five has helped prepare both my kids for school and beyond. It helped build a strong foundation for a love of learning.” Now in Kindergarten, Liam was “motivated by 500 by Five to want to read.” Families can sign up for “500 by Five” at any Calvert Library location or online at calvert.lib.md.us. For more information call Beverly Izzi at (410) 535-0291 or (301) 855-1862.

Tween Outdoor Art @ Calvert Library

Jackson Pollock was known to stand high on a ladder, dribbling and flinging paint down at a canvas stretched out on the ground in his barn.  We won’t be standing on ladders, but Tweens should come out to the Market Square lawn (between Calvert Library Prince Frederick and Panera Bread) on Tuesday, May 13, 6:30-8:00 pm for a fantastic exploration of the splatter paint style in a locale that won’t get paint on the books!  We will experiment with color, tools, and various methods. Each Tween will be given a piece of the painting(s) created this evening after the canvas finishes drying. Registration is required.  Visit  www.calvert.lib.md.us or call 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Calvert Library hosting customer survey; Pew Research Center presents national library info (press release)

Pew study “Libraries and Society” illustrates critical roles of U.S. libraries

An overwhelming majority of Americans acknowledge that public libraries offer more than just books and provide community-tailored programs and services that improve the quality of life, according to “Libraries and Society,” a report released recently from the Pew Research Center that examines the role of public libraries in communities.

“I am proud that libraries have earned enormous trust and satisfaction from the American public,” said American Library Association (ALA) President Barbara Stripling. “But we also know that one-third of all Americans still lack home Internet access, and a recent global survey finds U.S. adults lag behind many of their counterparts overseas in basic education skills. Our work is not done, and libraries will continue to innovate and meet evolving needs as new technologies and applications emerge. Libraries are transforming lives through education and help level the playing field for all.”

The report found that 95 percent of Americans agree that libraries play an important role in giving everyone a chance to succeed. At a time when more and more information is moving online and into digital formats, people continue to highly value free access to books and media, assistance from librarians, a safe and welcoming public space, and a range of resources, workshops, classes and events.  Calvert Library is currently running their biennial customer survey.  Director Carrie Plymire said, “We look forward to hearing specific feedback to be sure we are meeting the needs of the community and to using that data to plan our future course.”

From 2011 to 2012, public demand for digital training and technology classes increased 36 percent, while the demand for public Internet-connected computers went up 60 percent. The Pew study found that 72 percent of all Americans adults have either used a public library in the past year or live in a household with a family member who is an active library user.

“The future of libraries is both online and in person—high tech and high touch,” says Stripling. “From children’s storytimes to makerspaces to mobile applications and augmented reality, libraries mix traditional and new services to meet changing community needs. If you haven’t visited your library lately, I invite you to stop by or log on and let us surprise you.”  A library visit would be a great way to celebrate National Library Week, April 14-19, and you can complete a Calvert Library survey while you are there.

Teens Speak Out Against Tobacco Use

According to the Maryland Youth Tobacco Survey, about one out of four high school youth in Calvert use tobacco products.  Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable deaths in the United States so with funding from the Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund, Calvert Library and Calvert County Health Department hosted a contest for teens to produce public service announcements to dissuade youth from using tobacco.  Twenty-two youth participated in the contest!  There were 67 people at the Red Carpet event with Roz Plater from ABC News as the celebrity emcee.  The event included a photo booth, swag bags, and refreshments sponsored by the Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund.  The venue was decorated by the Calvert Library Teen Advisory Council of Students (TACOS) and they were there to meet and greet in their formal gowns and tuxedos.

Roz Plater, Jonathan Gauthier and Tammy Halterman were the judges for the contest and emcee Plater expressed enthusiasm for all the entries.  She said that all three judges were very impressed by the creativity and technological know-how these teens exhibited.  A big thank you went out to Charles Gauthier for his support of the contest including donating cameras for teens to use and teaching video editing classes at the library.

The People's Choice award went to Girl Scout Troop 6061. They had over 350 views by the deadline for scoring which means they did an excellent job promoting their video and the anti-tobacco message.  The team included Alexis Rinker, Eva Hartsig, Victoria Rodriguez, Erin Clow, Sabrina Pearson, Marisa Brock, Julia Roush and Bethany Higgs.  Each took home a Bluetooth speaker as part of their prize.

The Judge's Choice winner was Sydney Bailey’s ad that was a compilation of teens saying why youth shouldn’t use tobacco.  Bailey received an Amazon gift card in addition to her trophy.  Bailey is a student at Patuxent High School and said that she does a lot of video editing just for fun and she hopes to pursue a career in acting.

Keep an eye out for the winning commercial on Comcast channels such as MTV, VH-1, Comedy Central, SyFy, Nickelodeon, ABC Family, TLC, Cartoon Network, Animal Planet and others.  Later this spring, all nine winners will take a limo out to dinner together to celebrate their work.  If you see them, be sure to congratulate them!

The contest was coordinated by Calvert Library, supported by the Calvert County Health Department and funded by the Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund.
