Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch Celebrates their First Birthday
April 2, 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch is celebrating their first birthday the whole month of April!  They are hosting two big authors, the US Secret Service, Live Action Clue for teens and eight different Makerspace events!
Whether you are high-tech or textile-tactile, you will find a Makerspace event for you… make a button to celebrate the Osprey Festival in North Beach, make some earrings or a wallet, learn about wildlife photography and create Bay-inspired décor with the laser etcher.
If you'd rather listen and learn, put one of the sessions about Internet Safety on your calendar (Thursday, April 10, 6:30pm for adults or Saturday, April 12, 2pm for kids!), come hear author Michael Kauffman's take on the conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln on the anniversary of his death or learn how to support your loved one with PTSD from expert Dr. Elspeth Cameron Ritchie.
Dr. Ritchie brings extensive experience in military and veteran mental health issues, with a distinguished 28-year career in the Army and a focus on forensic psychiatry. Her expertise encompasses the psychological challenges faced by service members, veterans and first responders. PTSD can lead to symptoms such as flashbacks, severe anxiety and uncontrollable thoughts about the event, impacting both the individuals and their loved ones. "PTSD Support for Loved Ones," is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 1pm to 2pm.
Michael Kauffman will present "Finding Something New in an Old Story" on Monday, April 14, 2025 at 6pm. There will be a display of related artifacts at the library for the next two months, as well.  Kauffman's book "American Brutus" used a multidisciplinary approach to studying this history, applying modern criminology, behavioral science, legal reasoning and information technology. It has been praised as a thorough and well-reasoned account of the Lincoln assassination. Kauffman has been described as "legendary" in the field of Lincoln assassination studies and his book was optioned as an HBO miniseries.
The new Twin Beaches Branch opened on April 16, 2024, and has already seen nearly twice the expected visitors.  According to Branch Manager Melissa Gray, the staff has hosted over 122,000 customers, made over 3,000 new library cards, circulated over 200,000 physical items, had over 10,000 computer uses and presented over 700 programs for more than 17, 000 attendees.  Ms. Gray said, "We knew this new space was needed, but the positive reception from our community has been truly overwhelmingly positive. It's gratifying to see so many community members find their way here and how they have made it their new space."
