Suzanne Shelden, Alberta Contee, and Edward Davenport - Local Artists’ Works Exhibited at Calvert Library Art in the Stacks – at the Southern Branch, at the Twin Beaches Branch, and in Prince Frederick.

For May 2016, Calvert Library presents the work of three Southern Maryland artists exhibiting cross-stitch, watercolors, oils, and photography.

Calvert Library Twin Beaches presents the work of Alberta Contee, a lifelong resident of Calvert County. She began her foray into the art of cross stitching in the late 1980s. “My interest was sparked after seeing some work done by a good neighbor…Over time my love and passion for this art form increased.” Upon entering her work “Tea Sampler” in the Calvert County Fair, and winning her first Blue Ribbon, Ms. Contee says, “I was hooked!” Her love of cross stitch led her to wonder and research artists creating patterns that reflected African American history. “Our heritage found in the low country region of the South…Yes, my passion is the African cross-stitch, but I also enjoy stitching all types…Hopefully these pieces will become a lasting memory of this art form for my children and grandchildren.” Ms. Contee was drawn to the piece pictured here, “Portrait in Purple”, because it reflects much about the way women dressed in the Low Country region, particularly the head wrap. “I love the colors and bringing the piece to life was truly enjoyable!” Ms. Contee’s cross-stitch pieces will be on exhibit at Calvert Library Twin Beaches from May 2 – May 31, 2016. To learn more about the artist and her work, join us at a Meet the Artist reception, Thursday, May 19, 7-8 pm."

Since 2005, Suzanne Shelden has been recording and painting views of Route 4. Her Route 4 Series, also called the “Tour de 4,” celebrates Calvert County, its rural and natural heritage, and the road we all know that takes us there. She set rules for this series: the paintings are of views that a car passenger or driver can see from the road. “Most of the imagery is photographed at 55mph capturing the views from the passenger seat,” according to Ms. Shelden. “Those taken from the driver’s seat are taken from a safe place along the road, but must still capture the spirit of the commuter’s view.” Ms. Shelden has gathered all available work and some brand new work from this series to show exclusively at Calvert Library Southern Branch in Solomons.  The show, running from May 2 – June 30, features many beautiful barn scenes and some views of nature you’ll want to go looking for, right on Route 4! Join us at the Meet the Artist Reception on Thursday, May 5 from 7 to 8pm. Light refreshments will be served. See more of Suzanne Shelden’s work at CalvArt Gallery in Prince Frederick and at Fridays Creek Winery in Owings, or visit her website at www.sheldenstudios.com.

Edward Davenport will exhibit his black and white photographs of the Drum Point community, animals, and landscapes at Calvert Library Prince Frederick April 1 through June 2, 2016.
