Gospel Music Concert and History Event (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 10, 2015

Contact:  Robyn Truslow  410-535-0291

In partnership with some very talented people, Calvert Library Prince Frederick is offering a special treat for the community on Monday, February 23 at 7pm.  The Brooks United Methodist Men’s Choir and the Gospel Sisters will be lighting up the library with a gospel music performance. Between songs, Guffrie Smith will share a brief history of gospel music and insight into the history of specific pieces.  If you love music, do not miss this event.

One favorite that will definitely be heard is Take My Hand, Precious Lord.  This song, written by Thomas A. Dorsey, has quite a background story rooted in the loss of his wife and infant son and subsequent reflection about obedience to God’s leading.  This song became one of Martin Luther King Jr’s favorites.  King often invited Mahalia Jackson to sing this song during civil rights rallies and Jackson sang it at his funeral.  Other songs to be featured include The Lord's Prayer, I Trust in God, We've Come This Far, Amazing Grace, Bye and Bye, and How I Got Over. For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Astronomy Night at Calvert Library Fairview Branch (press release)

February 2, 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Astronomy Night - Your Guide to the Stars!

Come see what the night sky has to offer with cool, high-tech telescopes.  Drop by the field behind Calvert Library Fairview Branch from 7pm to 8:30pm on Tuesday, February 17, and join the Astronomy Club of Southern Maryland’s search of the skies. Telescopes and other astronomical equipment will also be on display inside the library. Talk to experts about everything from meteors and the Milky Way to star clusters and sunspots. With cooperative weather, stargazers should see Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Orion nebula as well as the comet Lovejoy. This is a family event for all ages.

If the exhibit and starwatching spark your interest, you might want to follow up with the Astronomy Club of Southern Maryland which meets once a month (based on the phase of the moon), usually at Jefferson Patterson Park.  There are no dues and there are plenty of telescopes for viewing.  For more information about the club, check out their website http://somd-astro.s5.com/.  For more information about the event at the library, call Robyn Truslow at Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.
