Judging from number of customers bringing them in to the library, many people received a tablet, smartphone or an ereader as a holiday gift this year and the gift card for books that they got with it is starting to run out.   That’s okay, as these customers have heard, you can borrow books from Calvert Library on your ereader!  The demand is high so sometimes it takes a little patience for the title you are looking for but there is usually something available that you can use to pass the time with while you wait for the one you put on hold to “arrive.”  There is currently about one copy per six customers on the hold list and the goal is to get that down to one copy per four customers.  Since the books check out for up to two weeks, the wait should almost always be less than twelve weeks.

Calvert Library is part of a statewide consortium that buys ebooks for Maryland library customers to check out on their ereading devices.  As of today, there are nearly 6000 titles available with multiple copies of each.  If you wonder why there needs to be multiple copies of a digital book, maybe you would be interested in attending the ebook workshop at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Tuesday, January 24 at 7pm.  Robyn Truslow will explain how digital rights management works for library ebooks and also tell you how to download those books to your device.  If you would like to attend, please register through the website or by calling 410-535-091 or 301-855-1862.

Getting set up to take advantage of library ebooks does take a little patience the first time but after the initial software is downloaded and your account created, it is even easier than a trip to the library to “pick up” a few books.  Attendees will be walked through the entire process of downloading the software, creating an Adobe Digital Editions account and then checking out an ebook and loading it on an ereader or smartphone.  If you have one, feel free to bring your e-reader, laptop and/or smartphone for hands-on practice.

COLD WEATHER BRINGS COOL MUSIC FROM RED-HOT ARTISTS.

If you have been a regular at Calvert Library Tuesday Tunes in May, please adjust your calendar. In an effort to ward off the winter doldrums (and hopefully any big event-canceling storms), Calvert Library will be offering their new music series, Winter Interludes on various weeknights this winter.  Accomplished local artist Courtlyn Carr and Baltimore based, emmy-nominated Ellen Cherry are the singer/songwriters headlining shows on Thursday, January 19, 2012 and Wednesday, February 29, 2012 respectively. The two ensemble acts included in the winter concert series are local dance-band favorite “2-4-U Band” and the United States Naval Academy’s “Electric Brigade” on Thursday, February 16, 2012 and Thursday, March 29, 2012 respectively.  All the concerts will take place at Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 7pm.

Local country artist Courtlyn Carr comes back home to play for her hometown friends and fans. A graduate of prestigious Berklee College of Music, she has now moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she has been playing hotspots like the famous Blue Bird CafĂ©, and sharing the stage with hit songwriters and artists like Lorrie Morgan, Ty Herndon and Linda Davis.  She made a visit home to open for Martina McBride at the Calvert Marine Museum.  Now see Courtlyn at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Thursday, January 19, 2012.

The Electric Brigade (EB) is the Navy’s premier popular music ensemble and the U.S. Naval Academy’s musical ambassadors to the nation. Made of up enlisted sailors EB provides entertainment for formal occasions, pep rallies and everything in between. Since forming in 1979 Electric Brigade has performed as far north as Iceland all the way down to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Expect all ages to be tapping their feet while the group shows off their repertoire of modern pop, classic rock, country, disco, swing, hip-hop, soul and more. See Electric Brigade at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Thursday, February 16, 2012.

Soulful singer/songwriter Ellen Cherry classifies her music as, “spunky downer pop…for smartypants.” The Baltimore artist is a hard working full-timer. She has licensed her music to the Oxygen Network, MTV and Soap.net. In 2009 she wrote, recorded and performed a TV campaign for the FOX Networks and even composed the score for a shadow puppet piece entitled “Alonzo’s Lullaby” that won the prestigious UNIMA Citation of Excellence. She was awarded Maryland State Arts Council’s Individual Artist Award for Vocal Performance (2007) and Music Composition (2009). See Ellen at Calvert Library Prince Frederick February 29, 2012.

The 2-4-U Band is an energetic husband and wife team performing oldies, rock-n-roll, swing, and classic country hits. The 2-4-U band hails from Calvert County and has been performing for the past 20 years.  Bring your dancing shoes because we are clearing space and expecting a Macarena and more!  See the “2-4-U Band” at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Thursday, March 29, 2012.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Friends of Calvert Library

If you did not receive Friends of Calvert Library Books & Bubbly 2012 tickets in your stocking this year, you can still buy tickets at any Calvert Library location.  Tickets will also be available at the Giant Book Sale January 12-14, at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  For $35 you will be supporting a great cause and having a lovely evening all at once.  This event, held on Friday, January 27, 7-9pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick, is an elegant evening with delicious food, great music, bubbly and other libations.   Music will be performed by a talented group of musicians in an ad hoc band, “Beat the Reaper.”  Michael May, David O’Brian, Glen Jenkins and Ken Hoffman perform an eclectic collection of 60’s through 90’s tunes.   Special guest author Peter Abresch will do a brief reading from his most recent book that actually features a scene from a fictional Books & Bubbly.

As grants and other sources of funding have declined, Calvert Library has been grateful for support from their Friends.  Recently, Friends made a $12,000 donation to the Calvert Library to supplement the budget for the purchase of books and audio visual materials.  They have also provided funding and volunteer support for many of the youth events offered at Calvert Library such as the recent Gingerbread House Workshops, Kids Just Want to Have Fun, Teen and Tween events, Shenanigans and more.

For more information call 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.
