Update on Calvert Library pest situation (press release)

Late Friday, September 23, the library was able to identify the household that was returning books to the Calvert Library Prince Frederick book drop that contained evidence of bed bugs.  The individual was quick to agree to take action.  His household will not be using the library buildings until their landlord has taken care of the bedbug situation in their home.  Any materials they have are being isolated and treated.  Library staff breathed a short sigh of relief and then quickly went to work sorting out what other books may have been in the home, checking the shelves and contacting anyone who may have checked the books out after that.  All individuals contacted were calm, understanding and sympathetic.

A few of the people that Director Carrie Plymire contacted did find possible bedbug evidence but fortunately no live bugs or eggs. To be safe, the library asked those customers to return their items in zip-top bags and sent them information about how to identify bed bugs and what to do if you find them. Calvert Library met with an exterminator on Monday, September 26, and a canine certified in bedbug detection visited each location on Wednesday, September 28.   Barker Lewis, part Border Collie and part Greyhound, was the canine completing the inspections at each library location and he found no live bed bugs.  According to observers, he was extremely focused, professional and thorough.

Bed bugs have an uncanny ability to spread using unsuspecting people and their belongings as carriers. While it is wonderful to live in a community that travels, it does mean there is the risk of bringing unpleasant things home to Calvert in your luggage.  They can be found even in the cleanest five-star hotels. No one wants bed bugs in their home and since they are clearly in Calvert County, it is wise to take precautions.  It seems we must all be vigilant. There is no need to stop going to the library, after all, the staff is there 61 hours a week, touching books all day and they are not afraid. Everyone should check books as carefully as the librarians are. Bed bugs do hitchhike if given the opportunity. They do not jump or fly but they can crawl pretty quickly and are attracted to carbon dioxide (our exhalations) because they feed on blood, not crumbs or waste.

There are steps to take if you think you may have been exposed to bed bugs.  You can keep a clean change of clothes in a zip-top bag and change into those before going into your house and immediately put your exposed clothing in the dryer for at least 30 minutes on high heat.  Leave your exposed shoes outside your home or perhaps in a zip-top bag.  Other recommendations from the National Pest Management Association are:
·         Vacuum suitcases after returning from a vacation.
·         Check your sheets for telltale blood spots.
·         Consider bringing a large plastic trash bag to keep your suitcase in during hotel stays.
·         Carry a small flashlight to assist you with visual inspections.
·         Never bring second-hand furniture, especially mattresses and box springs, into a home without thoroughly examining for signs of bed bugs.  Consider having a pest control professional inspect the furniture as it is difficult to detect an infestation without training.
·         Regularly inspect areas where pets sleep for signs of bed bugs.
·         Seek professional pest control assistance to address an infestation.

While Calvert hasn’t been a county with a big bedbug problem in past years, that may be changing as bed bugs spread across the country.  While no one wants to be terrorized into never going to the movies, never traveling, or never visiting the library, it is good to be aware.  The librarians in Calvert have done quite a bit of research on bed bugs.  Here are a few of their favorite resources.

Director of Calvert Library Carrie Plymire said, “We are confident that our collection is safe and that our library locations are free of bed bugs. However, library staff will remain vigilant and will continue to inspect materials that are returned to the library. We appreciate our customers’ patience as we check books and their loyal support as we try to disseminate accurate information. Keep calm and Read On.”

It’s a tough world out there, but Calvert Library has got your back!

Back by popular demand, Kyle Webber of Black Belt Academy of Prince Frederick will be joining forces with our own black belt librarian Molly Crumbley to present an interactive self-defense workshop for tweens and teens at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  As our young people are starting to become more independent, it’s important for them to know how to take care of themselves and stay safe.  A martial artist who holds both a 4th degree black belt in taekwondo and a blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Master Webber will teach participants about situational awareness, escape strategies, assertiveness training, and basic striking techniques on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 from 6:30-8:00 pm.

Due to the interactive nature of the workshop, participants are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing.  For tweens and teens in grades 5-12; registration required.  Our past workshops with Master Webber have all had waiting lists, so be sure to register today so you don’t miss out!

CRAB Card for all Calvert Students (press release)

September 22, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Students in the Calvert County Public School system went back to school with an extra bonus this year.  In a brilliant partnership, Calvert Library and Calvert County Public Schools have given every student a special library card.  They are calling the card a CRAB card… “C” for Calvert, “R” for Research, “A” for Access and “B” for Books.

It isn’t a physical card so there is nothing to lose.  Students can check out up to five print items at a time and no fines will be attached to the account. They just need to know their student lunch number and stick CALV at the front of it.  Best of all, and the motivation for the school system to enthusiastically embrace this offer, students will have access from home or school to the library’s many online resources.  Those include online tutoring and homework help, research databases, technology courses, newspaper archives, testing practice, language lessons and of course for fun, downloadable ebooks, audiobooks, movies, music, comics and TV shows.

Library staff made presentations to many teachers during the orientation week before school started and there was a lot of enthusiasm about this new access to library resources.  A number of schools will be getting devices for individual students to use and ideas were already flying; how the whole class could check out the same book from Hoopla and read together; how teachers could encourage students to submit their papers to the online writing lab first so they would have a more polished paper to hand in; how a class could learn how to do history fair research in a variety of databases with each individual researching their own selected topic.  One teacher asked for extra Brainfuse bookmarks (online tutoring service available through the library) to be able to share with parents.  One teacher/parent was thrilled to find out there was online math tutoring for her high schooler!

Calvert Library Director Carrie Plymire said of the partnership, “Libraries are all about access to learning. We want every student, every child to be able to use the library.  The CRAB Card makes it accessible even to those families who aren’t able to get to the library every three weeks to get their books back on time. Whether it’s complicated transportation or complicated family schedule, we don’t want anything to stop kids from accessing the important resources the library offers.  We are thrilled that Dr. Curry and Technology Integration Teacher Specialist Jen Sturge partnered with us to create a CRAB card for every CCPS student.”

This new partnership takes advantage of economies of scale…the library subscribes to numerous resources for the community and their subscriptions are based on population served so Calvert County students are already included in that number.  With their CRAB card, students will be able to use valuable resources like Lynda.com, HelpNow! Powered by Brainfuse, online encyclopedias, TumbleBooks, testing practice resources, CQ Researcher, Newspaper Archive, Washington Post, Gale Virtual Reference Library and African-American History Online.

Parents probably noticed the new paperwork this year for technology in the schools.  More and more, academic resources are accessed online so learning how to access, evaluate and use information this way becomes ever more critical.  Calvert students’ new CRAB cards will give them lots of opportunity to hone these skills.

Calvert Library is including homeschoolers, private schoolers or even pre-schoolers in this bonus as well.  These students under the age of 18 can obtain physical cards with the same parameters (5 checkouts of print material without fines, access to all digital resources) at any Calvert Library location.  Just ask for a CRAB Card.  Plymire believes that “all children should have access to information, education and opportunity and that’s what we’re offering at Calvert Library.”

Annual Music Industry Seminar

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Creative careers in music, art, technology, literature and more need robust networking support.  Calvert Library and Alchemical Records team up every year with this goal in mind.  The first couple years, the event was called the Annual Music Industry Seminar, fondly referred to by attendees and producers as AMIS.  This year, the event is stretching its wings with a more inclusive theme—Jump-Start Your Creative Career!  So often, musical people are artistic in more than one realm and there are many opportunities to take advantage of that flexibility.

On Saturday, October 8, join independent artists and entrepreneurs for an opportunity to discuss intellectual property, creative connectivity and partnering for success in the industry.  Musician and Calvert Librarian, Joe Ruff, will moderate panels on these topics.  Panelists will include Jeff Schad, Founder and President of Montauk Music Agency; Kevin Hock, Marketing Director and Promotions for 24-7 Entertainment; Joan Cooke, artist of PhD Unknown Web Comic; and Daniel Warren Hill, Founder and President of Alchemical Records.

The event will run 12:00pm to 4:30pm with open networking at both the beginning and end.  Details of the schedule and registration can be found at http://calvert.lib.md.us/AMIS.html. And it couldn’t be a music industry event if they didn’t take requests so you will find a link to submit topics if you have a burning question you want discussed.

Registration is encouraged but not required.  See webpage http://calvert.lib.md.us/amis.html or call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 for more information.

All American Boys One Maryland One Book events (press release)

September 20, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

In September and October, the whole state of Maryland is being asked to read All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. In this unforgettable book, two teens—one black, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension. Written in tandem by two award-winning authors, this tour de force shares the alternating perspectives of Rashad and Quinn as the complications from that single violent moment, the type taken from the headlines, unfold and reverberate to highlight an unwelcome truth.

There are copies of the books floating around in various locations all over Calvert County.  There are copies of the print book and the audio book at the library.  You can download the ebook for free from the library in both Overdrive and One Click and the audiobook is downloadable also. Ask your librarian for help with any of these!

In Calvert County, there are many opportunities to talk about this book. See the schedule below. In Charles County, you can meet the authors on Wednesday, September 28 at 11am at St. Charles High School in Waldorf.  Join us whether you’ve read the book or not. On Saturday, October 15, at 7pm, Huntingtown High School’s Eye of the Storm Productions will put on a Reader’s Theater performance of the book.  This group of talented actors led by master director and producer Derek Anderson, will bring the story to life.  It isn’t often that you get to see this amazing troupe perform for free so take advantage of this Maryland Humanities sponsored event!  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291.

Mini Golf at Calvert Library! (press release)

Friends of Calvert Library are raising the fun in fundraising this year with their inaugural Friends of Calvert Library Mini Golf!  After the library officially closes on Friday, September 23, teen volunteers will help set up the golf course, and then at 7pm, the doors will open for a great teen night out.  The price is $10 per person and includes pizza, popcorn, soda, live band and photo booth!  The musicians are Owen Edwards, Jordana Nye, Wyatt Garrett and Jonay Boylan, all students of Garrett Music Academy. Start planning some great Instagram posts for this night!

On Saturday, the course will be open for $5/person (ages 6 and under free) from 11am to 4pm.  There will also be face painting and other fun activities at the library so don’t plan that day for quiet study! Saturday evening beginning at 6:30pm, there will be an adult event complete with hors d’oeurves, silent auction, photo booth and a 19th hole (cash bar).  Those tickets are $40/person and include your first drink. If you want to be assured of a chance to play a round, get your tickets early at any Calvert Library location or online (for a small processing fee) at http://bit.ly/CalvertMiniGolf

Quite a few individuals and businesses in the community have jumped into this exciting new fundraiser.  Sponsors include Community Bank of the Chesapeake; Recorded Books; Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa; Comcast; John A. Hofmann, Civil Engineer; Keep it Simple Computing; Midwest Tape-Hoopla; Southern Solutions; both towns of Chesapeake Beach and North Beach; Martha Grahame; Winegardner Auto Group and even the Calvert Library Foundation wanted to be sure to get their name on a hole.  Keep an eye out for the county’s Department of Technology Services hole which promises to be pretty creative!  There are still a few opportunities for sponsors. For more information, call Robyn Truslow or Megan Jones at 410-535-0291.
