Thanks to generous funding by the Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund, Calvert Library is hosting a Tobacco Use Prevention Contest for Calvert teens. The deadline for entries has been extended to March 1 so there is still time to get in on the action. Teens are being asked to create a 29-second Public Service Video Announcement that aims to prevent tobacco use. Teams are encouraged! The winners will get a limo ride out to dinner with their team.  Other prizes include Bluetooth speakers and gift cards.  The rules, format and posting information is on the Calvert Library website and questions can be addressed to Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291. The website also has useful links to royalty-free music, tips for video-editing and more. Thanks to donations from volunteer Charles Gauthier, the library also has video cameras that teens can check out to capture their footage. Mr. Gauthier has offered to provide some video editing coaching upon request as well. The grant from the Maryland Cigarette Restitution fund has allowed the library to purchase video editing software that is available to use on library laptops at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.

It is also possible that the winning video will be played on Comcast stations such as VH-1, Comedy Central, TLC, MTV and more. It will certainly be featured on the Calvert Library YouTube channel. Post completed videos early because one video will win the People’s Choice award by having the most YouTube views.

Star treatment is not just for the winners; all contestants and their entourages are invited to celebrate the Kick Butts! Video-Creating Contest at a Red Carpet Event on Wednesday, March 19 at Calvert Library Prince Frederick. The red carpet event will feature a photo booth, swag bags (for those aged 13-19) and more in the theme of the Oscars. During the event we will watch the videos from all of the participants and announce the winners.  For more information please contact Robyn Truslow at Calvert Library Prince Frederick, 410-535-0291.

Calvert Library Southern Branch to host Song Circle

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 17, 2014

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

Calvert Library Southern Branch to Launch Monthly Song Circle

Are you looking for opportunities to play, sing, and hear different kinds of folk music?  Calvert Library Southern Branch will host monthly folk music get-togethers beginning Wednesday, March 26, 2014, 7:00-8:30pm.  These “song circles” encourage singer-musicians to share and learn music with each other.  The goal, in the words of the late Pete Seeger, is “to put a song on people’s lips, instead of just in their ears.”

Join the circle each month for a different theme or genre of acoustic folk music. Our first gathering will focus on Celtic songs and music as we trade songs and take turns choosing or leading a piece. Look for us to also try some bluegrass, old-time Appalachian, and contemporary singer-songwriter tunes in future gatherings.

Song circles are meant to be informal, lower key than an open-mic and more structured than a free-for-all jam session.  It is envisioned as a combination jam session and sing-along with space for learning from each other and trying new things.   A range of playing abilities and experience can be expected, and do feel free to join us as a non-playing singer or even just to listen.

So, bring your acoustic instrument, bring a song to share that fits the Celtic music style and everyone can sing.  Join in or sit back and enjoy some music making.  We’ll be raising our voices in Solomons from 7:00 to 8:30, March 26.  No registration is necessary.   For more information, call Joe Ruff at Calvert Library Southern Branch at 410-326-5289 or email at jruff@somd.lib.md.us.

NEWS RELEASE for Immediate Release

STEAMBOATS COMING TO NORTH BEACH

The Bayside History Museum, Calvert Library and Friends of the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum proudly announce a lecture to be held on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the North Beach Town Hall, 9036 Bay Avenue, North Beach, Maryland given by Dr. Ralph Eshelman.   Before roads were built, people traveled to Calvert County via steamboat or train.  Enjoy hearing stories about the steamboats and wharves that peppered Calvert County at one time.

Grace Mary Brady, Director of the Bayside History Museum, said, “What an honor it is to host a lecture given by our own, Ralph Eshelman.  He was the founding director of the Calvert Marine Museum from 1974 to 1990 and wears so many hats.”  Dr. Eshelman is considered a leading authority in the history and paleontology of the Patuxent River.   He is also a specialist in maritime history, polar exploration, vertebrate paleontology and has written numerous books.”

Gracie chuckled as she said, “we had to track him down to the Antarctica in order to arrange a date for this presentation.”

“The history of this county is so rich and often picturesque,” said Carrie Plymire, Director of Calvert Library. “We are delighted to be partnering with the Bayside History Museum and Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum once again.  Dr. Eshelman has quite a presence in our libraries so I expect an informative and entertaining event.”  The book, Harbours, Creeks & Places:  The Steamboat Wharves & Landings of Calvert County, Maryland, written by Anne M. Sundermann, was based on the 1996 report, "Calvert County Steamboat Wharves and Landings:  Architectural Level Survey and Inventory" by Ralph E. Eshelman.  The project was supervised by the Calvert County Historic District Commission through the Calvert County Department of Planning and Zoning.  The book is available to check out at all four branches of Calvert Library.

Other books by Eshelman include:

In Full Glory Reflected:  Discovering the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake

A Travel Guide to the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake: Eighteen Tours in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia

The War of 1812 in the Chesapeake:   A Reference Guide to Historic Sites in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia

Maryland's Largest Naval Engagement:  The Battles of St. Leonard Creek, 1814, Calvert County, Maryland

Historical Tours through Southern Maryland:  Solomons by Foot, Bicycle or Boat

Hilary Dailey, President of the Friends of the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum said, “We are familiar with stories about the ‘mile-long’ steamboat pier built out over the bay and it will be fun for our lecture attendees to hear about the other sites.”

For more information, contact Grace Mary Brady of Bayside History Museum at 410-610-5970 or Robyn Truslow, Calvert Library, at 410-535-0291.

Prevent Identity Theft workshop (press release)

February 11, 2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Robyn Truslow

410-535-0291

With the frequent reports that another password database has been cracked and big retailers’ credit cards files have been hacked, we are all a bit worried about identity theft.  On Saturday, March 8 at 2pm, Calvert Library Prince Frederick is hosting a workshop to help you protect your identity.   Presenter Isabel Cumming, while serving on the Governor’s Commission on Identity Theft, was instrumental in passing the laws that help fight identity crime here in Maryland.  Attendees will receive handouts and informational DVDs and will learn what steps to take to avoid becoming a victim.  The best way to fight identity theft is knowledge and this lecture gives you the tools to guard your most valuable asset—your identity.

Isabel Mercedes Cumming is a world traveled lecturer on identity theft and white collar crimes.  Currently, she is the Assistant Inspector General of Investigations for the Washington Metro system.  For the prior twenty years she was a prosecutor in Maryland.  Her jurisdictions included the State of Maryland, Baltimore City and, for the last seven years of being a prosecutor, Prince George’s County where she was the Chief of Special Prosecutions and Financial Crimes.  Her lectures on ID Theft and her prosecution record have earned her the Top Fraud Fighter in Maryland for 2003, Top Certified Fraud Examiner in the world in 2006, and she has been named one of the Top 100 Women in Maryland three times.

Isabel has an undergraduate degree from James Madison University in accounting, a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Baltimore and a Juris Doctorate with honors from the University of Baltimore School of Law.  Lastly, Isabel serves as the President-elect of the Calvert County Bar Association and associate member of the Calvert County Commission on Women.  She resides in Lusby on an alpaca farm with her husband and four teenage boys. Film based on Much Ado About Nothing at Calvert Library on March 5 (press release)

February 10, 2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On Wednesday, March 5, join Calvert Library Prince Frederick for the 2012 film version of the Shakespearean classic Much Ado About Nothing. From director Joss Whedon, one of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies is reimagined in the modern day, and artfully shot in black and white. Despite the machinations of the evil Don John and his cohorts, the story of Claudio and Hero, and their bawdy and bickering friends Beatrice and Benedick, reminds us that no matter what, truth will out. The film features Nathan Fillion, Clark Gregg, Sean Maher, Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker. Lights go down at 6:00 pm and the film will be followed by a short discussion ending by 8:30 pm. Coffee and popcorn will be served.  For more information, call Robyn Truslow at (410) 535-0291 or (301) 855-1862.

Kip Hine Completes Twenty Years of Service to Calvert Library (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 3, 2014

After twenty years as a steady, guiding influence to Calvert Library, Board of Library Trustees President Kip Hine’s official service ended in January of 2014.  He served on the library board for ten years, took a year off, and then completed a second ten years of service bringing skills attained during his professional career to the Board.  He served as President of the Board for eight years.

Mr. Hine also served on the Board of the Southern Maryland Regional Library Association (SMRLA) for about twelve years, many of those as President. Because he is so highly regarded, he was appointed by Governor O’Malley to the Maryland Advisory Council on Libraries (MACL) in 2009, and currently serves as its’ President.

His skill in organizational behavior and personnel helped him to oversee the restructuring of SMRLA and the county libraries upon the retirement of long-time Director Kitty Hurrey, who had been the Director of each County system and the Regional. As part of the restructure, each county library hired their first Director. He assisted with the hiring of a new SMRLA Director, Sharan Marshall, in 1995, the appointment of Calvert Library’s first Director, Patricia Hofmann, in 1995, and the hiring of a new Calvert Library Director, Carrie Plymire, in 2013. He served on many long range planning teams, including Calvert Library, SMRLA, and MACL.

His first project on the Calvert Library board was to research and guide the installation of security systems at each library branch. His building projects included a renovation and addition of the Fairview Branch, a renovation of the Twin Beaches Branch, a major replacement library in Prince Frederick, and most recently, relocating and tripling the size of the Southern Branch.

Under his guidance, the library changed computer systems, implemented Sailor (a state-wide broadband internet service for libraries, schools and local governments), filtered library computers, and hired a collection agency.  He has celebrated many occasions with the library, including the 50th anniversary. No one who attended the dedication of the library in Prince Frederick will forget his remarks when he picked up a young child and said, “This is why we built this library.”  That was very moving and so true.

Mr. Hine is a gentleman who runs a great meeting, understands the relationship between the board and the Director, and is steady and dependable.  He is highly respected by staff, fellow board members, and elected officials.

Sharan Marshall, Director of SMRLA, stated that he is always there to listen and to lend a hand when asked. He is dedicated to the library and appreciative of staff.   Carrie Plymire, Director of Calvert Library, has had the pleasure of working with Mr. Hine for six months.  She said he has a strong knowledge of the library law and sees the big picture. She also added, “Can we change the bylaws so he can serve on the board forever?”

Marcia Hammett, Branch Manager of Calvert Library Prince Frederick points out his great sense of humor and notes that Mr. Hine does not need to be the center of attention though he actively seeks support from elected officials.

Irene Padilla, State Librarian has worked with Mr. Hine on MACL.  She appreciates his sound leadership and guidance.  MACL has their first long range plan, created through Mr. Hine’s leadership.  Jim Fish, Director of Baltimore County Public Library, has come to know Mr. Hine through MACL.  He said he is conscientious, organized and he works hard to bring meaning to MACL.

Patricia Hofmann, former Library Director, worked with Mr. Hine for over nineteen years and for eight of those he was the President of the Board.  According to Hofmann, “He has always been steady and reliable and available to give advice.  He has been dedicated to the library for twenty years, and has taken that dedication to serve the region and the state, on behalf of better libraries in Maryland. He has trusted library leadership to excel and has expressed appreciation for the hard work of the staff.  Mr. Hine is proud to be part of the Calvert library system and the greater Maryland library system.  We were fortunate to have him as a Library Board member for twenty years.”

For more information, call Robyn Truslow at Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.
