“Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War,” a national traveling exhibition which focuses on Abraham Lincoln’s struggle to meet the constitutional challenges of the Civil War, opens at the Calvert Library Prince Frederick on July 12, 2012 and will be available for viewing until August 24, 2012.

Abraham Lincoln was elected the sixteenth President of the United States in 1860, at a time when the nation was falling apart. By the time he took the oath of office, seven states had already seceded from the Union. The exhibition vividly evokes Lincoln’s struggle to resolve the basic questions that divided Americans at the most perilous moment in the nation’s history: Was the United States truly one nation, or was it a confederacy of sovereign and separate states? How could a country founded on the belief that “all men are created equal” tolerate slavery? In a national crisis, would civil liberties be secure?

The National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office organized the exhibit with the help of a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH): Great Ideas Brought to Life. The traveling exhibition is based on an exhibition of the same name developed by the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Calvert Library is offering free lectures and other events for the public in connection with the exhibition.  These include docent-led tours, living history re-enactors, lectures from nationally-known Lincoln experts, children’s events, Civil War genealogy workshop led by National Archives genealogy specialist, film screening and discussion and more.  Some of the experts who will be speaking include Michael Kauffman, authority on John Wilkes Booth and author of American Brutus; Bradley Gottfried, avid historian who has published seven books on the Civil War and is particularly renowned for his battlefield maps; Harold Holzer, one of the country’s leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln and the politics engulfing the Civil War era; Craig Symonds, author and expert on Naval and Civil War History; Justice Frank Williams, author and premier collector of Lincoln memorabilia.

Re-enactors include members of the Federal City Brass Band performing historical music with authentic instruments and in historically accurate uniforms; Jim Getty as Abraham Lincoln; Bill Grimmette as Frederick Douglass; Mary Ann Jung as Clara Barton and members of the Orphan Brigade, Camp 2166, Sons of Confederate Veterans.  Expect to participate in hands-on demonstrations of daily life for Confederate soldiers, try your hand at creating period crafts, playing Civil War-era games, and more.  A complete schedule of events can be found at  http://calvert.lib.md.us/Lincoln.html.  Or for more details, please call Robyn Truslow at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Title IX Celebration at Calvert Library (press release

June 6, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calvert Library and the Commission for Women are partnering to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Title IX on Monday, June 26 at 7pm.  Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is the federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in schools and colleges that receive federal financial assistance. While often called “the sports law,” Title IX covers all aspects of how schools treat students – from admission to athletics and the classroom. Margaret Dunkle with the Commission for Women will introduce and moderate the discussion.  According to Dunkle, prior to Title IX’s passage, it was perfectly legal to discriminate against women in the workplace and in schools when receiving professional degrees.  Discrimination was particularly obvious in the arena of women’s sports where women only received 1-2% of college athletics money and there were no athletic scholarships for women.

After Dunkle’s introduction, a panel including Commissioner Susan Shaw; Gladys Pederson Bowers, 1950 Graduate of Calvert County High School; Kim Roof, Director of Student Services for Calvert County Public Schools; and Robert Earl Radford, Head Coach, Northern High School Girls’ Softball Team and a proud Title IX dad will tell their personal Title IX stories.  There will then be time for questions and for the audience to share their Title IX stories.

Dunkle and the Commission for Women are recruiting partnerships with organizations who are willing to sign a Title IX Partnership Pledge identifying one thing their organization will do by the end of 2012 to show support for Title IX.  On Tuesday, June 5, the Board of Calvert County Commissioners presented a proclamation in support of the 40th Anniversary Celebration and encouraging citizens to participate in the activities and programs around this anniversary.

Margaret Dunkle has been described as “the unsung heroine of Title IX.”  Her leadership was a major force in ensuring strong Title IX rules, especially in athletics, which quickly became the most evident and contentious area of inequities for women and girls.  Her work on this project resulted in her being inducted into the Maryland Women’s Hall of Fame.  Meet her and tell your own story on Monday, June 25 at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862.

Calvert's Next Idol on June 22 (press release)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

For the past three years, Calvert Library and Garrett Music Academy (GMA) have teamed up to produce Calvert’s Next Idol, a competition for the talented youth of our county.  Some very talented vocalists have taken the mic and wowed the judges.  GMA awards one winner in each age category a free demo recording in a state of the art recording studio.  There will be three categories: ages 9-11, ages 12-14, and ages 15-17.  The audition date is Friday, June 22 at 6:00pm at Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  Registration can be done online through the library website (calvert.lib.md.us) or by requesting a printed application.  If you are using a CD, please bring the music you will be singing.  Make sure that the original artist’s vocals are not present on the recording by getting the karaoke track for the song you will be singing.  You will sing the shorter of up to one minute of the song or the first verse through the first chorus.  Background harmonies may remain in the song.  Several competitors will be selected that evening to continue to the Final Competition the next night, Saturday, June 23 at 6:00pm at the Calvert Library Prince Frederick.  Doors open at 5:30pm each night and the public are welcome to attend.  Seats fill quickly.

Contestants must be Calvert County residents and previous first-place winners are not eligible to compete.  Participants’ parents/legal guardians will be asked to sign a media release consent form at registration so a parent must attend with their child or sign a form prior to the event.  Winners are selected based on a variety of criteria that span the quality of the live performance, technique, pitch, rhythm and intonation, and entertainment value. The judges will comment on the performance and may interact with the contestant by asking questions and making comments. After the last contestant of each age group has auditioned, the judges will go into a closed-door session to decide those winners that will go on to Finals.  They will re-emerge that night with the list of finalists. For Finals, contestants will sing up to two minutes and be judged using the same criteria as the first night.  Finalists do not have to use the same song but may do so. Decisions of the judges are final.

This year the judges for the first round are Charles Harris, Tom Dahrens and Jen Armstrong.   Nashville producer Tom Dahrens is also a music writer and has produced dozens of artists in Nashville and worked in the area’s most prestigious studios. Music videographer, Charles Harris from Southern Maryland has worked with many nationally known rap artists such as P. Diddy and Lil’ Kim.   Jen Armstrong, singer and pianist, rounds out the panel.  She has been the choir director at Jesus the Good Shepherd and was selected to perform for the Papal Mass in Washington DC.  For more information, call the Calvert Library Prince Frederick at 410-535-0291 or 301-855-1862 or check the website at calvert.lib.md.us
